...does NISA just keep becoming more and more awesome?

What I refer to, of course, is the Disgaea reprint.

Now, I'm sure everyone knows that I'm no fan of Disgaea. I hate the characters (except for Etna, who I can respect somewhat), I hate the story, I hate the system, I hate the fans, I hate the effect it's had on SRPGs. HOWEVER, you know what I do like?

Companies that listen to their fans. And NISA's probably the best out of any in that regard. Yes, better than Atlus in some ways. Why? Because, aside from Blade Dancer, every single non-NIS port that they've done or are doing has been suggested on their forums by the fans in large numbers. GoC IV, Spectral Souls, Ar-tonelico, even the AIs.

I like that model of business for a niche localiser, since it lets them pander a lot better to their target market. Gameplay addicts get Idea Factory, wistful whiners get Gust, and the rest get NIS. It's not perfect, but it's a hell of a lot better than a certain company that ran itself into the ground by being stupid and picking games on a single person's taste. I also like how NISA actually gets games out there in a decent amount of time, and in decent enough numbers for the market.

What does that have to do with the Disgaea reprint? The fact that a good share of NISA's market was going, "damn, I wish I could play this legendary game," and NISA went, "go for it, and it's now on sale." I'm sure that this is going to piss off eBayers and collectors to no end, but I really don't care. I think it's nice for a company to reprint something that its fans want. Especially when they were involved with another company at the time for its localisation.

I'm not saying that NISA is ever going to replace Atlus as the king of niche, because they won't. But it's nice to have a secondary outlet of niche that has a business plan that includes more than "release random games years late because I, Victor Ireland, deem them worthy of random fart jokes in place of translations."

I guess what I'm saying is, to all the people in the world that said that WD could never be replaced by NISA and that NISA could never do something as 'awesome' as releasing crappy LEs with bad items?

NYAH NYAH NYAH NYAH NYAH NYAH! Eat prinny plushie and Disgaea reprint! Your AtL Collection and Growlanser watch can't shield you from this!

NISA> WD indeed. However, that's not saying too much, Arche.

Quite a few PC developers do this as well... it's pretty awesome when you go to their forums and there's an entire subcategory devoted to suggestions and feedback for their next game, plus having the devs post regularly letting you know whats coming next and what they are doing to improve the game.

I'm glad there is a company that listens to its fans, but... I'm sad also cause that means the value of my copy of Disgaea will go down. :( I didn't like the game that much anyway and it's value was basically the reason it stayed in my collection. Oh well.

I gotta agree with Arche. A company that listens to what it's fans want and still does business properly is a damn good company. The whole forum idea is great too because you get to actually converse with people who work for the company.

Now if only Atlus would get into the habit of reprinting some of their better games like NISA does. Oh well, wishful thinking I suppose.

BTW what has Idea Factory made anyways? Summon Night: Sword Craft Story comes to mind but, that's it. If that is infact one of them.

Oh Arche, I totally agree with you. The niche publishers like Atlus and NIS make me feel warm and fuzzy inside.

yeah, i felt like that about rez. i'm glad more people can play it now, but what really bugs me is the reprints are almost always the same damn thing as the first print run.

i want there to be something seperating my copy from newer ones, but it shouldn't be scarcity; there should just be superficial changes to cover art or layout with newer editions, so that everybody can still play the game but weirdo collector types like me still get something to hold on to.

hell, i remember two versions of the nes metroid. there were the gold carts of zelda games, of course, though there really isn't much difference in rarity between the two versions. silent hill's first print run had a nicer manual cover, as well.
