I have recently finished the first Halo (on PC) and so I would like to talk about it. Specifically, the last bit of the game. Now, you know Halo is an FPS (Frames Per Second....no...wait...). As it is, while there may be other diversions, the focus of the game should be on some form of, crappy framerates, I mean, shooting through a first person perspective. So why, why, WHY is the last part a racing segment with possibly the SLOWEST vehicle in the game with NO ACCESS to shooting (or even a first person view) at all? I mean, sure, it could be a nice diversion, maybe towards the climax (or even during the climax, whatever), but for the love of God, during the last segment, you're on foot for like, 5 seconds before and about 5 seconds after (both of which you may end up shooting something but you'll probably just dash through to your objective). I mean...what the fuck man. Such an anticlimatic ending. I didn't expect like, some huge ass boss or anything, but I expect a game that is roughly 90% shooting to...you know...have some part of its mainstay gameplan at the end of the game. I mean, even if you don't want to give a traditional ending, just...like...make it have a bit of your core gameplay into it, at least. Especially since the last few parts of the game were some of the most interesting (and frustrating). |

Halo 2 had a much better finale, but I'll just leave it at that in case you haven't played it. But yeah, I was thinking the same thing about this game when I was finishing it up. I don't care for racing games, and it didn't really feel like a good way to end the game. And while it would've been kinda cheesy, I was secretly hoping the Monitor would turn into a big robot and fight you or something. Even something like maybe having Master Chief have to fight off 10 Hunters at the same time by himself would've been OK. Still, at least this was better than FFIX's finale... |

No, FFIX's finale introduced "I'LL HIT YOU WITH A MILLION STATUS EFFECTS" and it was, still, a battle, so it wasn't too bad. Also, one thing peeved me was that during that final Halo part, the checkpoint system is iffy. I messed up the first time about 10 steps from the end (after I got off the vehicle already) and I accidentally threw a bomb as I moved my mouse (a cockroach suddenly went on my right hand <_<). Needless to say, I killed myself and had to start ALL OVER AGAIN. |

I actually loved the finale of Halo. You know why? Every other FPS ends with you shooting a boss, or with you shooting tons of monsters, and it's what I had been doing for 95% of Halo. This tried somethign different and really gave the intense feeling I was looking for. Granted, I didn't die a single time, was playing on Hard, and had no framerate problems at all, so that might have affected your judgment. |

I was thinking that if they really wanted that part to feel intense, they should've used a faster but lighter ship with a stricter time limit. Say, 4 minutes using a Ghost instead of the...jeep thingy, whatever it was. I'd probably have liked it much more then. |

Don't you just LOVE Ren when he says stuff like this? Yeah, so one that sticks out to me in particular is the Gummi Ship in the Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts II. The one in KHII is a lot less painful than the one in KH, but still... wtf. An awful 3D shooter in the middle of an RPG, too pathetically easy to even provide some challenge, too long and boring to provide any extra interest. I realize that they needed some way to connect all of the planets together, but they couldn't think of anything better than the damned Gummi Ship?! |

Yes, they could have, and DID. After all, Sora somehow got from his island to Traverse Town without a ship, so it can definately be done. That said, I think it would've been more tolerable if they'd just cut out the ability to customize the ship altogether. It was pointless; I was able to get through every shooting stage with the default ship. Besides, most REAL shooters don't have such customizing options yet are still better than this. EDIT: Mikallen beat me to posting, so I had to change the context of the post a bit.

It's true though right, the Arwing missions were fantastic! But the lack of continue points and the horrid gun control always had me starting from the beginning of the level and making me quite mad. The levels were quite long too! I'm just so pissed at all the potential they fucked up. The game looked great, the voice acting, while nothing can top Star Fox 64's was pretty good. And the presentation in general was fantastic. Damn shame. On another note, concerning Halo's ending, I agree with Ren. Shooters were so formulaic back then, and the Warthog escape scene was something different and sweet, especially in co-op. Seeing all that shit explode as the sweet Halo theme was playing was just a pure awesome part of the game. |
