I was just wondering who all played this one for the Gamecube? Being the adventure/survival horror fan I am, I jumped all over this one as soon as I heard about it. For some reason I have the fondest memories of this game. I remember loving the sanity effects (even sometimes predictable, I still found them ridiculously entertaining), the magick system was well done I thought, and playing as characters from multiple time periods is always a plus. The game did, however, become repetitive past a certain point of dominating hoardes and hoardes of those zombie things. It's a fair sized adventure, maybe 10 or so hours. I remember beating it twice back when I was really into it. I always hoped for seeing a sequel or a related title at least, but nothing has ever popped up. Anybody else remember this game? Liked it? Loved it? Hated it? Never heard of it? Got any stories of sanity effects getting the best of you? |

I have; I never did beat it but I got really far. I loved it. It was a very intriguing survival horror and I loved how the playable characters switched throughout the game. The sanity effects were also very devious. I'm sure this is an obvious one, but one time I was playing the game at night and decided to go to bed. So obviously, I was off to go save my game. The game started saving and then suddenly, it actually changed the text and said it was DELETING my save. I stared at it pretty much dumbstruck, and then of course, the insanity effect occurred and I realized what was going on XD. "THIS CAN'T BE HAPPENING!" I also walked into a room once and realized I was actually playing as a zombie. It confused me for a moment, then amused me endlessly until "THIS CAN'T BE HAPPENING!" and I was back to where I actually entered the room. Man, I need to finish that game. |

ED is the shit. Plain and simple. Icarus and I used to play and it was a ton of fun figuring out the puzzles and playing as the many different characters. It's definitely a hidden gem, which reminds me that I'd like to find a copy. |

It's been a long time since I played this sucker, but I remember it being pretty cool. I especially liked how the story used conspiracy theories and made you feel like you were really fighting a truly ancient evil. I do kinda wish there'd been more bosses (I only remember two or three), but that's a minor complaint. This is definately one of the most inventive games I've ever played. Also... (and just forwarning you, this spoiler ruins more than just plot, so read at your own risk)... [sp]That bathtub scene was the closest I've ever come to soiling myself while playing a game. I was so shocked, all I could do for a few minutes was make Alex just walk around not doing anything productive.[/sp] |

The scene that RS was talking about was SO ****ING SCARY. I had heard about it beforehand, so I didn't think it would be that bad, but JESUS! Scared me out of my wits. Great game in general. I really want to finish it. |

I played it and beat it. Overall it was okay, but towards the end it just got so mind-numbing that I couldn't stand it anymore. Mostly due to the bad combat and you had to fight like 10 monsters at the same time. |

the combat i didn't mind so much. targeting individual body parts was a nice idea, and they at least threw in some enemies that made you use that creatively. the sanity effects just stopped being a draw after a while, though. they were supposed to be unpredictable events that really messed with your head as much as it was supposed to mess with the charatcer's. occasionally it did reach that level, but more often than not the sanity effects were just gimmicky crap that made you laugh or pulled you out of the game. and of course, things like the crash screen or the controller trick only work once. the sanity bar, especially, just made it too...videogamey. i guess i'm the only one who didn't find that one particular scene to be scary? c'mon guys, it was the cheapest "boo" moment ever. hey, there's another one-time only trick... |

Yeah, my problem with the sanity effects was that after the first few times they just got annoying. Like, yeah, I get it, my head exploded, but can you please actually let me walk all the way to the door? |

Played it years ago, but I got bored towards the end and never finished it. The sanity effects were a good idea, but I wish they had made them more subtle - as other people have said, the "big" ones (controller not plugged in, etc) only serve to pull you out of the game. Combat was clunky and the vast amount of enemies made getting across an area a pain in the arse. I did like the magic system though. |

Yes, this is a complaint most people have (myself include, really). However, I try to let this complaint slide when I'm discussing the game because the first few one-timers got me so good and once they are over, you understand that they won't get you anymore. So I had already braced myself for the predictable ones that interrupted gameplay, but since I respected what the developers were trying to accomplish in terms of originality and creativity, I just let it slide.
Ah yes, the other favorite complaint (myself included once again). Well the combat was a bit clunky like Kimimi said (it was originally an N64 game IIRC), but I enjoyed the targeting system. But having to slice and dice through hoardes and hoardes of these zombie creatures just to go through a room that is a link to another room that you need to access got a bit ridiculous, especially as the game wore on. But once I think about it, I have this complaint with most games that I play, too many battles to get from point A to point B. I should try to be more patient!
OMG PLAY IT NAO! |

I actually really liked the combat. It was fun being able to just slice their heads off and then not worry about them at all. |

Me and my brother rented this game ages ago and neither of us were really satisfied with it. The sanity effects were neat but, that meter was screwed up. Even when it was empty a good 70% of the time nothing would happen. And after you'd seen a few of them their effect really wore off on you. Combat and story wise neither of us found the game interesting. Not bad, just not interesting. |

i have trouble letting problems with the sanity effects slide. while it was an interesting and well-meaning idea (as well as being the major selling point of the game), the implementation frequently worked directly against what they were trying to achieve, leaving the overall effect cheapened by what amounted to a bunch of one-shot gags. overall they feel more like a weakness than a real strength. i did feel that the story picked up some of the slack with the whole reoccuring settings across time and a decently lovecraftian plot. still, the whole craziness idea would have benefited so much from a greater degree of subtlety. i really don't recall the fighting as being so bad, though. aside from the one boss in the cathedral, which i remember took forever to kill. |
