The only reason that I'm posting it is because it's a four-player action RPG from Level 5. WTF. I'm excited for a main Dragon Quest. How about that? |

You mean you're excited for a major release on a Nintendo platform. How about that. |

-_-; It's sort of aggravating how everyone thinks that I'm such a fanboy that anything on a Nintendo platform excites me, because that's really not the case at all. I was only interested in the business implications of this until I read that it was an ARPG developed by Level 5 with WiFi, at which point I got really excited. |

I just think you like a lot of games. You know, low standards of entertainment. No offence, just a theory. But 4 player ARPG by Level 5 does sound exciting.

I guess they weren't kidding when they said they developed for the highest selling platform. No more Dragon Quest on Playstation, eh? |

I actually do have extremely low standards. I can enjoy almost anything, barring a few things that just turn me off entirely. http://www.kotaku.com/gaming/dragon-quest/...tage-221139.php There's a few seconds of footage. Looks really pretty for the DS. |

This is indeed, awesome news. I think an action-RPG wouldn't be half bad if they kept everything else in tune with the traditional Dragon Quest standards (i.e. big beautiful world to explore, still have a decent amount of story, typical DQ monsters, etc.). That said, I would've preferred turn-based gameplay, but this definately has potential to rule. I'm also extremely glad that they said they want to keep the traditional full-fledged single player game intact while still implementing online play. I just hope they live up to it. |

Wow, thanks for the info Rumour... I had no idea about this. Wow. The four-player co-op part is the part that really excites me. Is it WiFi enabled? That'd be awesome, kicking ass with three other members of GA42.

I'm not sure. Horii said that it was the first DQ game to be network-enabled; that generally means WiFi/Internet, but since it was in Japanese I could see it just meaning playing with nearby friends. But I would guess WiFi if I had to. Apparently the co-op is less co-op and more just playing in the same world at the same time. Like, you never have to be in the same place; when they demoed it, Hino was off exploring the more impressive environments to show those off (Hino is the producer/head of Level 5), Sugiyama was off fighting random monsters and Horii was waiting patiently in front of a dungeon for people to join him. If it's WiFi and has voice chat, I'm definetely buying this. VC is actually a pretty viable option, too, since Nintendo recently released a headset in Japan. |

http://youtube.com/watch?v=1V5VYINEbFs&mode=related&search= Tiny bit of footage. On a semi-related note, Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker is possibly the most beautiful game that I have ever seen on the DS. http://youtube.com/watch?v=6t13YAwIDXo |

i don't even like dragon quest, but playing with others over wi-fi could sell me on this shit in a heartbeat. i miss how many games used to be built around multiplayer co-op like that. |

I think that this whole decision is really important, though, in terms of the industry. Putting something as big as Dragon Quest on a portable is a VERY big deal. I doubt it'll have that much impact on Western-focused developers, but for those who have to focus on Japan I could imagine it stirring things up quite a bit. RPG support for the DS could ramp up a lot, I think. I'm wondering exactly how big of an impact all the changes to the game will have on sales, though. I'm betting that they made it more newbie-friendly so that it would have wider appeal to the sort of non-gamers that the DS targets, and some sort of major shake up for the franchise was inevitable, but I'm not sure exactly how the Japanese public will react to it. Do they love DQ enough that no matter what happens they'll go out and buy it, or are they going to see this as a bastardization of what's nearly a part of their culture? |

Holy crap... I dunno about the gameplay, but this is going to look and sound incredible, if nothing else. As for how this will settle with fans... I think it'll hinge on just how much the game really depends on the multiplayer and action-RPG aspects. If they pull a Final Fantasy Crystal Chonicles on us, then no, it'll flop. However, if these new features are just that... new features, and nothing more... and this is otherwise a Dragon Quest game through and through, with a massive world to explore with towns, an overworld map, and NON-randomized dungeons, and the game has a strong story, and is just an overall solid game to play through regardless of whether you're playing by yourself OR with three friends... then it'll be the best thing to happen to portable gaming in over a decade. Things do sound promising between that video actually looking like a main Dragon Quest game, and having the main series' staff working on this along with Level 5. Let's hope they deliver the goods on this. |

I think the main reason Crystal Chronicles flopped was they sold you an amazing multiplayer experience, then told you if you wanted to play with your mates you *had* to purchase four £80 (or whatever) GBAs and link leads for everyone too. It's a great experience once you've got it set up, but the intial outlay Nintendo (and Square) were expecting people to pay was ridiculous. |

The chalice sucked too. In the single player Mog carried it for you, but in the multiplayer, one player gets shitcanned while the others fight. |

Actually, my point wasn't that Crystal Chronicles sucked or anything... it's actually not too bad... it just didnt' feel at all like a Final Fantasy game. It was more like a mix of a Mana and a SaGa series game or something. And not to mention, it was, like a lot of multiplayer games these days, designed ideally for more than one player. One person playing alone doesn't get the "full experience." It's not like Contra or Secret of Mana where the game kicks the same amount of ass with one OR two players. And I'm seriously hoping that doesn't happen to Dragon Quest IX. It needs to feel like Dragon Quest aside from happening to have real-time combat and multiplayer, and it REALLY needs to feel like a fully fledged game in single player. |
