I see no need to elaborate on that. GAME OF THE YEAR ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Honourable Mention: ![]() ![]() EDIT: Yes, I know the original GotY 2005 topic happened an entire week later than this one. However, since there's barely anything left in the year, week or not, it might as well come up now when people have time to think about things as a break from holiday strife as well. And, yes, I know that I listed a game that didn't appear in NA as my Honourable Mention. It skipped NA for EU, and it's one of the greatest games ever, period, that will never come out here, and not some thing that's coming over in a couple/few months. |

Man Arche you really liked GU eh? Oh and for the record I don't think we've even used half of our 16 megs. Bandwith wise we should be fine. If needed we can always glean out some of the pictures from other topics. Anyways here's my nominees. Elite Beat Agents - GBA Final Fantasy 12 - PS2 Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess - Gamecube Honerable Mention: Valkyrie Profle 2: Silmeria - PS2 |

I can't really think of many great games that came out this year, and the only two I'm likely to consider for a GOTY nomination are FFXII and Gothic 3, and I've yet to play either. |

oh, now i feel better. because i don't have a ds, 360 or psp and most of the stuff i got behind this year were more interesting failures than they were goty material. so unless i can nominate secret of monkey island, panzer dragoon zwei and dragon quarter, i guess i'll sit this year out. :\ |

FFXII is game of the year material. I haven't really played the other heavies or surprises like EBA. I can't really contribute to this thread until at least two weeks from now when I have played my copy of EBA. I also have to think of another game. Hmm... Xenosaga was damn good. |

I'd have to go with Okami. I recognise FFXII objectively as a superior game in many respects, but very few games have utterly charmed me the way Okami has. Glad to hear XSIII getting mentioned - I bought it on release and I still haven't played it yet! It might be the next game I tackle, but my friend went and bought me Disgaea so I've got to go play with Prinny first

Lessee, since my PS2 was busted up this makes things much easier... - Company of Heroes - Super Robot Taisen: Original Generation 2 - Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition Honourable mention: - Dark Messiah of Might and Magic (regular gameplay rocks, most boss fights are...iffy, haven't played MP, and of course buggy as hell) |

For GOTY: - New Super Mario Bros. - Half-Life Episode 1 - Wild ARMS 4 Honorable mention: - FF7: Dirge of Cerberus In order to make it fair, I listed these... because they also happen to be the ONLY 4 games that came out this year that I actually finished... which is why you don't see FFXII, Okami, Xenosaga III, and either Suikoden V or Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime (not necessarily in that order) instead. I mostly spent this year putting a dent in my backlog, and replaying older games that I really like. However, they're all solid games anyways, so I'm still quite comfortable nominating them. Also... notice how 3 of the 4 games I nominated (the exception being WA4), are all relatively short (under 15 hours)? Just goes to show that games don't have to be 80 hour epics to be great. Also, if game collections counted, Sega Genesis Collection would be the best game released this year by a landslide. It's the best compilation of games ever released on 1 disc, and I doubt any other game in history could give you so much meaningful content for $20. |

Sword of Etheria is awesome. I guess my GotY would be Defcon or something. I played a bunch of good games, but none that really jumped out at me going "I AM THE GAME OF THE YEAR, NAME ME OR I WILL SHAVE YOUR CATS". I guess g3 is the closest to that, but it has presentation issues. Now that it's out int he US though, I should get it and patch it up mightily and see how it is. |

I still haven't played FFXII, Portrait of Ruin, or Zelda: TP, all of which are probably potential GOTY material. Anything I'd nominate so far has already been nominated anyway, though, so I guess I'll just wait for the voting. Looking back, it was a pretty slow year. What happened to the big rush I was expecting in November? Heh... |

Any deadline? I'm using my time to finish up the everlasting FFXII and Twilight Princess and haven't dedicated very much to VP2, Okami, Yakuza, Devil Summoner, everything else I bought this year. FFXII is definitely my #1, but those other three spots are up in the air. I could give a general impression, but I don't want to jump the gun. Also I just got a 360. |

GotY 2006: FFXII The game has totally captivated me. I think this game has been discussed enough around here, so I'll leave it at that. |

Yes. And quite challenging too. About half are base-building affairs (but with a few things to keep it interesting) and the other half are special 'commando' missions where you're given a a couple squads/tanks and must finish the mission with them (you do get reinforcements every now and then). I'd say it takes about 15 or so hours to beat it on Normal. Then you have Skirmish mode which is basically the AI kicking your ass over and over until you learn how to properly play. What makes CoH so interesting is the fact that it's probably one of the most realistic RTS's out there, but it's still fun, and extremely balanced, simply because most of the units complement each other. Although, if you disliked Dawn of War's overly aggressive gameplay, you probably won't like this one either. There is also a ton of micromanagement; one well placed grenade can wipe out an enemy squad, same with satchel charges and mines when it comes to tanks. Very steep learning curve, but very rewarding in the end. |

I spent most of this year playing older games and catching up on backlog like Runeslash. It was mostly a year of FPS and action games. I just got Final Fantasy XII from a friend for Christmas and am already in love with it, but honestly, I haven't played enough to justify myself voting for it. But I will go ahead and nominate... yes, you guessed it: GOTY: Yakuza |
