This topic has been on my mind for the last few weeks. I considered making a poll; unfortunately my bias would affect the available options. Anyway, I'll start by listing my choices:

Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne
Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter
Valkyrie Profile 2
Final Fantasy XII
Wizardry: Tale of the Forsaken Land
Romancing Saga: Minstrel's Song
Jade Cocoon 2
Summoner II
X- Beyond the Frontier 3
Europa 1400
Gothic II
Final Fantasy X-2
Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines
Arx Fatalis

Honorable mentions go out to Fire Emblem 9, Riviera, Final Fantasy X, and Front Mission 4. It's obvious that one system dominated my list. I was not suprised by this. I feel that the PS2 has one of, if not the best game libraries. Especially when it comes to RPGs. I felt that its collection of RPGs was superior to that of every other console as well as the PC releases of this generation. Although that really is not saying much, since for a large part of the time, the new additions to the library mostly ranged from average to abysmal, with an occasional gem; the worst event and time being Troika's death and immediately after. As of now I feel that the PS2's RPG library is just under that of the PC's entire RPG offering.

Edit: Please note that my complaints about the PC library were only in regards to its selection of RPGs. Also, this is the first generation where I preferred the offerings of a console to that of a PC.

Second Edit: Sorry for the poorly constructed topic title. I'm exhausted. I will most likely search my posts for grammatical and spelling errors.

That's an excellent list, I'd say, pretty much my own list minus the stuff I haven't played.

If you asked me to choose the best RPG of the generation, I'd probably have to give it to Nocturne. It's just incredible in every area, from story and gameplay to graphics and music. A lot of fantastic games came out of this generation, but Nocturne's probably the most well-rounded with virtually no weak spots. I think the only games that rival it in terms of just being all-around incredible are BoF: Dragon Quarter and the Digital Devil Saga games. I'm only about 13 hours into FFXII, so that may also be a contender.

Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne
Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter
Final Fantasy XII
Wizardry: Tale of the Forsaken Land
Romancing Saga: Minstrel's Song
Star Ocean 3: Til the End of Time

I love Unlimited Saga but I can't really call it my favorite.

Edit: I can't believe I forgot SO3 ;_;.

I'd have to go with -

Final Fantasy XII
Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles
Fire Emblem 7
Monster Hunter 2
Phantom Brave
Suikoden 3

I didn't invest enough time in Nocturne (compared to the other games here) to feel I could put it on the list, and whenever I remember to buy it I've always already spent my money on something else :)

Still need to get -

Breath of Fire 5
Digital Devil Saga 1 & 2
Romancing Saga: Minstrel Song

and a load more...

I'm going to limit this to RPGs I actually finished to ensure fairness. Also this is in no particular order:

Skies of Arcadia
Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne
Digital Devil Saga 1 + 2
Suikoden III
Star Ocean 3: Till the End of Time
Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter
Wild ARMS 4
Xenosaga series (I haven't finished ep. III)
Ys VI: Ark of Napishtim
Shadow Hearts
Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories

There's a lot of stuff I would love to list as well, but I simply haven't finished it, so it wouldn't feel right to me.

If I had to pick one for being the best RPG last gen, I'd go with Gothic II: Night of the Raven.

The challenging gameplay, deep and enjoyable combat system, massive and well-crafted game world, freedom of exploration and freedom of game progression, excellent music, and engrossing atmosphere make this one of my absolute favourite games. It's main weak point would be the translation, which is pretty bad.

Hmmm... I want to say FFXII as my absolute favorite, but something compels me to say BoF:DQ instead. In general, I would say:

FFXII
BoF:DQ
Romancing SaGa
Final Fantasy X-2
Digital Devil Saga
Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance
Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories
Summoner 2
FF:CC

I'd actually be willing to go and scrounge a copy of BoF V and RS out of budget bins to send to Kimimi after seeing that. o_0

Although Monster Hunter 2 being on the list makes it ALLLLLLLLLL better.

what
The only last-gen RPG that I've completed and really enjoyed (as in, didn't disappoint me on some level) was:

SMT: Nocturne

Although if Zelda counts, Twilight Princess could get my vote too.

My favorite last gen was Nocturne. FFX-2, DDS1/2, and FFXII, and Xenosaga III are also up there. FFX, KoTOR 2 (Whaaaa?) the original Shadow Hearts, and Xenosaga II are behind those, but still up there.

I also just ordered Dragon Quarter. I'm looking forward to it.

Romancing SaGa: Minstrel Song
Unlimited SaGa
Wild Arms: 4th Detonator
Tales of Symphonia
Final Fantasy 3 DS
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles
Phantom Brave

It was a tough choice, but those are the games that come to mind. In any case there are some games I still need to complete such as Tale of the Abyss. Also some of the older titles (based on when I played more than anything else) like Final Fantasy X, I probably need a refresher course on. Also yeah I know there are titles I need to get started on in the first place, but all in due time.

On the other side of the coin if I had to mention RPGs I didn't care for to avoid the impression I like everything. Well Okage: Shadow King was fun at first, but the (only) joke got old very fast and I just didn't care anymore. Then there was Arc the Lad: Twilight of the Spirits which convinced me I should play something else.

Also games like Atelier Iris: Eternal Mana and Radiata Stories are interesting. I feel they are worth owning, but I also feel they are not worth their original price. Which I'm glad I got both for under $30 each instead of $50 each. It's also why I waited for Atelier Iris 2: Azoth of Destiny to drop in price. I knew I wanted it, but not for that much.

I am pleased by the variety in the lists everyone has made. While a few games seem to appear in almost every list, I have yet to see any lists that are carbon copies of each other. This excites me because it shows that this message board is not some insular circle jerk, but a community where debate is at least encouraged. Even more impressive is the fact that both civilty and debate exist in the same forum. Gamers Abyss 42 is the only area of the internet safe from console warriors.

Final Fantasy XII
Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne
Final Fantasy X
Unlimited SaGa
Romancing SaGa: Minstrel Song
Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines
Divine Divinity

Secondary favorites include DDS1, Front Mission 4, and Morrowind. Dragon Quarter, ToEE, Gothic II, and Space Rangers 2 (not really a RPG though) all looked very impressive, but I haven't put enough time into them to really say.
