There's a general DS RPG topic where some people were excited about it, but that was months ago. Also: I think it's funny that almost all of his complaints could apply to SoA, too. <_<;;; At least from my perspective. |

true, but using the real world as a setting for your game only makes lazy or stupid world design that much more transparent. at least in a genric fantasy world you can take it as an abstraction. that's the same problem i had with terranigma, really. not uncharted waters, though. fuck yeah new horizons. |

That's not related to SoA; while Valkyria Chronicles is made by the same team; I don't get why people even compared the two. |

well, it's the most direct and obvious comparison. world full of airships in age of exploration, evil militaristic empire, mystery girl in white dress. it seems there's at least a general fondness for arcadia with nostalgeo's developers. |

That's sad. I was hoping it'd be okay, since it kind of looked like it might be a cute and fun diversion that would be comfortable to just slide into for a bout of saccharine nostalgia binging. But instead, it's... ...ick... |

I always despair a little when I see London represented in RPGs. For starters, it's not the only bloody place of interest in the country, and my other problem is that everyone seems to think that Dick Van Dyke is some kind of definitive "Cockney geezer" |

I prefer to imagine London as a hub of commerce and fashion populated by Victorian era prissypantses.
Seriously, though, I agree 100% with Kimimi about countries being slapsided for no reason. Other than the incredibly BAD depiction of Canada in Sailor Moon: Another Story (where it's just two backwards forest lumberjack villages), I can't imagine a way in which Canada wouldn't be depicted as either "Those bland people that aren't American north of America" or "Those snotty French people that aren't French north of America" or both, if a JRPG could its grubby little mitts on them. America at least gets the Wild West, New York, Hollywood, Las Vegas, Hawaii, and Alaska to play with for stereotyping locationalities. Japan gets detailed enough that you can have an RPG set in Shibuya. Any other country is stereotyped into a single location, or small set that follow a path. Italy? You are in Rome. Vatican + Catacombs + maybe Coliseum/Generic Roman Temple Ruins Dungeon. France? You are in Paris. If you are really lucky, a generic forest is renamed the Fontainebleu Forest, and a generic castle is present. Most likely, you are in the Eiffel Tower for the entire visit, or maybe the Louvre if someone read too much Da Vinci Code while writing. England? London, baby. Which consists of the House of Parliament's Clock Tower (note that I didn't call it Big Ben, since I know that does not refer to the building!) and the Tower of London. Mexico? Aztec pyramid + jungle. Pay no attention to the largest city in the world being Mexico City. South America? Easter Island or the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio. There is nothing else here but jungle. THERE ARE NO OTHER COUNTRIES AND IT MAY BE CALLED MEXICO! Africa? Pyramids, deserts, and jungle. AFRICA IS ALL PHAROAHS AND WITCH DOCTORS TO THE PRESENT DAY! EDIT: I think that a JRPG visit to Newfoundland would be awesome, since Newfies are pretty much what happens when you let a garbled mix of the more twangy British accents evolve through a population of drunks that inbreed. ;P *Apologies to anyone from Newfoundland on this forum. **Arche is not sincere. ***Yes he is. ****No he's not. His apology is saying he's sorry that they're from Newfoundland. *****Arche is from Alberta. That explains everything. It's like Texas, only cold. ******Like superior Western/Reform thinking. *******Arche wanted to vote for John McCain and Sarah Palin if he could. ********I can see my fist punching through the internet and your monitor from my house. *********Everyone still hates the French. |

You know what'd be an interesting culture for RPGs to visit (read: rip off)? The Indian subcontinent. Lots of geographical extremes, beautiful scenery and distinctive cultural architecture, art, and clothing. |

You're right, sadly. I was thinking more of brightly coloured silks embroidered with gold and Hindu temples covered with flowers though :/ |

Uh-uh. It'd be nothing but people in turbans with bindis (yes, men and women with both bindis and turbans on) talking about curry and snake charmers. The castles would all look like the Taj Mahal in a different colour, and the only cultural aspect of it all would be words like karma or dharma or reincarnation being sprinkled nonsensically. The MONSTERS would be elephants, tigers, and jungle (giant flowers). |

the moral of the story is: instead of bothering with rpgs set in india we should all just watch the fall. |
