There's a Big Bang Mini (DS) demo up on the Nintendo Channel, so I downloaded it. It's a neat arcade-y shooter that's only $20, and now I'm almost positive I'm going to buy it. BBM spans both screens. Enemies show up on the top screen, and you control your "ship" on the bottom. Control is interesting; unlike in most shooters, you can't move and shoot at the same time; dragging your ship makes you move, while scratching anywhere on the screen shoots off some fireworks (read: bullets) in that direction. This makes the game feel a lot like TWEWY's combat, because you're forced to alternate between watching the top-screen to aim your shots and watching the bottom screen to dodge bullets. The demo gives you your regular shot, and a slow/weak homing shot, and apparently the game gives you a number of other abilities as it moves on (walls, black holes, etc.). Speaking of dodging, that's another interesting point. Most enemies don't fire off too many bullets, and the ones they do fire are generally slow-moving and easy to dodge. If one of your fireworks misses its target, however, it explodes once it reaches the end of the screen, and the ensuing debris is far more difficult to avoid. (The demo never got particularly hard, I died a few times but beat the whole thing in about fifteen or twenty minutes, with some breaks, but apparently the full game gets difficult later on.) Enemies come on in waves; destroy all of the enemies and the next wave will come. When an enemy is destroyed, it drops a star; catch the star with your ship, and it fills a meter on the left side of the screen. Fill up the meter, and you move on to the next stage. It's worth saying that each stage is very short, only a few minutes at most, but I consider that a good thing, because it keeps the pace up and doesn't make death frustrating. It's a really good looking game. You have colorful, neon-lit, 3D cityscapes scrolling through the background, and the art style of the enemy sprites changes from area to area; one had a very Japanese woodblock print style, another made enemies out of little LED-looking lights, and the variety makes it all feel very fresh as you move from level to level. I didn't really notice the music much, but it isn't obstrusive at all, which is good enough for me. My only real concern is length. Granted, it's only $20, but the demo had 15 levels (counting bosses) and it didn't last me very long, so I'm worried about how long the actual game will be, but I have some money so I think I'm going to get it soon. |

uurrgh, south peak is responsible for so many awful things, this does not make me hopeful. so it's stylus only control? i don't know that i can put up with that; it's only because of world ends with you that i have any hope i could stomach the control scheme. my stylus hand blocking parts of the screen is what i'd imagine would do it in for me. i am however pleased to see that most of the screen-filling particle gibberish is confined to the top screen, rather than seeping into the play area and muddling everything behind a rainbow cloud like goddamned geometry wars. |

It's been getting really good reviews, if that means anything. I had the same reaction when I saw that Southpeak was publishing, but Arkedo is a decent developer and the game is actually pretty good. I've never had a problem with my hand blocking part of the screen with any game, so I can't help you there. Maybe I just hold it differently, but I can always see the entire screen. A good deal of the bullets eventually leak down to the bottom screen; it's by no means bullet hell, but it's relatively chaotic. This is a much better video, I think: http://ds.ign.com/dor/objects/14242056/big...8_kamakura.html |
