i forgot how interesting the qhimm forums are, regardless of the titanic reverence for ff7 on display. following a link took me to one particular blog with an entry on content that was dummied out in the final release of saga frontier. along with this he has links to a perfect works like guidebook of some sorts - sorry, haven't finished the game, not spoiling stuff for myself - that seems ot paint a picture of the game's story and design at a different phase of development.

1. Awesome find. I always wondered what the Asellus/Nusakan scene might entail.

2. I have essence. It's a fantastic book despite my inability to read a single kanji. I love it to death. There is a bit of info that can be deciphered without actual comprehension of the text. The "King of Region" bit is quite adorable, especially since I'm a big King of Fighters guy. Kobayashi's artwork is pure light and joy. Fantastic coffee table book.

3. The game needs to be finished. It's a great game as it is, but I stand by my statement that if it was complete it would be the A #1 best game EVAR.

Or something.

hah, glad you like it. i actually had no idea if this was common knowledge or not because i really don't follow the saga series much.

does it really feel unfinished, though? i mena, is it something you'd notice while playing, or only after reading interviews with the devs and such?

I've not played Saga Frontier (1), but I'm a complete sucker for hidden content left on game discs so I'm going to have a thorough read of this :)

It really depends on the quest. Some of the quests, like Red's, feel like the developer got to do everything that he wanted to. Some of the quests, specifically Blue's, just suddenly end in a manner that's extremely confusing. Read the spoilers for the ending of Blue's quest in the book; now remember *SPOILER* at the end of the final fight the screen just freezes and phases to credits.

There are a number of areas that just go on and on and never really lead to anywhere. It's quite difficult to tell if some of these areas were just unfinished or belong to another character's questline.

Only Fuses's quest was removed from the game. He plays a significant role in Red's campaign anyway; I'm not sure what was supposed to happen in his own quest, but in Red's quest he is fleshed out well enough and even has his own plot arc. Which makes me wonder if maybe Kawazu decided he could do what he wanted to with Fuse by attaching him to an already existing character campaign.

The actual mechanics are solid enough and feel as if they were given enough time. What polish that is lacking unintentionally comes in the forms of glitches and a few oversights with areas.

I apologize if this is spoilery.

It's interesting. Because as you will notice from the aborted text, it seems the majority of what was dumped is in Asellus' quest. Which oddly enough considering how much was lost is my absolute favorite.

Some quests are far more structured and seem more finished. Riki, Red, T260G, and to an extent Emelia.

Now, Lute and Blue's quests are supposed to be more open. However, after a brief initiation, you are left completely to your own devices. You can start Lute's endgame in about twenty minutes.

For Blue however, the point of the quest lends to this complete lack of structure, he has a specific task. Lute on the other hand is just "Ready? Endgame!"

Asellus' is strange. It starts very structured, then after hitting a certain flag you are left to your own devices in fits and spurts. Your being hunted, which is a fun element. There are parts that were supposed to be in as indicated by the text dump, that overlap with other quests. So, even without you playing Ase and Co on the Cygnus or at Trinity, it happens as part of Red and Emelia's quests respectively.

So in the end you've lost:

- A little of each Riki, Red, T260G, and Emelia's quests.
- All of Fuse's quest.
- Half to 1/3 of Asellus' quest.
- Any potential story elements outside of Lute's intro and endgame.
- Any potential story elements outside of Blue's intro and endgame.
- Blue's ending.
- Actual reasons for certain dungeons existing. (Bio-Research Lab anyone? It's my favorite place to train, but the reason for it to exist was cut from Ase's quest.)
- There are a handful of extra regions that you can access on the disc that were aborted.
- At least one minor character.
- What's with all the the 3d character models?
- A bunch of unused maps.

That seems like a lot, right?

So, in some cases you can tell where corners were cut. But, oddly enough what is there is still brilliant. That is, if you can handle the vast majority of the game is completely off rails.

I had heard that Fuse's quest was going to meander through the remaining seven tying things together.

The again, Wikipedia is telling me that there was going to be a ninth main character, so who knows?

Oddly enough I always thought that Blue was supposed to be one of the characters who you played to learn the mechanics of the game. Sort of like Laura and Ventus in Unlimited Saga. I say this because playing through his quest line is the most efficient way to figure out the magic system and the quests revolving around it.

I tried Blue first a long, long time ago. All I remember is being horrifically lost. Then again, it was my first SaGa Experience.

The near complete lack of a 'push' at the beginning makes me think it's not as great of a starter quest, but that's just me.

update: apparently you can access these unused scenes, because someone found them on nicovideo. provided you can manage the obtuse signup process, or already have an account there, it could make for interesting viewing.

Direct link to video. Cut scenes from Asellus' quest. Now with 200% more nudity.
