so i've seen a few of these sitting around and am curious, but don't know if it's worth my time to pick them up.

kingdom of paradise
generation of chaos
valhalla knights
mana khemia

i could go looking them up but honestly i expect a much more useful and trustworthy response from here. please sell me on these, or otherwise if you are so inclined!

Stay the hell away from Mana Khemia. It is aesthetically the ugliest looking game I've seen, with loads of load times (with horrid looking loading screens) + bland gameplay.

Kingdom of Paradise is a nice little action RPG with a great combat system, but weak everything else by the same people who did Alundra/Landstalker.

Generations of Chaos (IV) is definetely worth playing through and a great complex S-RPG that's just tons of fun once you get a hang of it.

Don't forget Aedis Eclipse (Generations of Chaos' sequel)

Also, Crisis Core is a good one to play, and if you can get your hands on a copy get Tales of Eternia; the speed boost and no loading times make the game feel COMPLETELY different battlewise.

ok, so i'll see if i can't grab generations of chaos and kingdom of paradise, then. wait though, isn't one of these an idea factory game? they can't have actually made something good, can they?

i guess nobody played valhalla knights? oh, and i'm also curious about that wild arms tactical rpg, if anyone tried it! EDIT: also, astonisha story and untold legends

i'm after the metal gear ac!d games but i'll be buying at least the first pretty much no matter what. i also already bought brave story at a five dollar game sale so no regrets if it is a cancerous hateful mess.

I played a bit of Valhalla Knights 2. LIke 15 minute's worth, then I realised I didn't like the battle mechanics so I ditched it.

WA: XF is pretty good. Lots of classes that you can change per battle, quite unique abilities. I really like the interface (quick, pretty, easy to understand). I'm early on but I'm at a mission that's at least a 2 parter and I keep losing at the 2nd part cause it's a MASS ESCORT MISSION WTF :(

I kinda like Brave Story. It is probably the epitomy of an "okay" RPG but elevates itself above other "okay" RPGs by introducing a (small) variety of skills that do different things, and you gain MP/SP/whatever it was based on damage you deal out, so it encourages you to fight in the most efficient way. Piss easy and quite monotonous at times but I'll still take this over, say, Dragon Quest or something.

Yep, the Generation of Chaos games are by Idea Factory. I've quite liked all of their games so far (that I've encountered, at any rate) even if on the whole they don't go forging brave new paths through the genre.

Brave Story isn't bad either; I wouldn't go as far to recommend it but after finishing it I didn't feel as though it had been a waste of time.

Honestly, I felt like Brave Story is a toned-down version of Chrono Trigger due to its battle system. The game's linear (it does have sidequests, but they're mostly "find this item for me" quests, though XSeed did do a good job in keeping the characters in the quests from behaving like each other) and the story for the most part follows the story of the book just with different characters (at least until the last quarter of the game where it actually goes in its own direction and is pretty interesting). However the battle system is great; like Chrono Trigger the more you use a team the more combos you eventually unlock for that team, and the interesting thing here is that as you use your characters more and more, they change their battle phrases (the concept here is that the friendship between the main character and the other people are developing in battle, so it's pretty cool they even show that somewhat with the phrases).

Valhalla Knights 1 and 2 absolutely suck. VH2 DOES try to fix VH1's problems but fails; the quests are ridiculously ambiguous to the point where it sounds like you have to meet a certain person to start it, but instead that person has invisibly joined your party (you don't see him in the menu or in-game AT ALL until you finish the quest) and you have to fulfill the other conditions which normally are kill-the-monster quests. The battle system also is fairly boring, though VH2 was slightly better (Dark if you played VH2 for 15 minutes, you'd have only played VH1 for 5. It's THAT bad.).

Honestly, just pick up Tales of the World Radiant Mythology. It does everything VH1/2 does but FAR better. Just keep in mind that that Radiant Mythology does NOT have some epic story like the console games, and is purely a dungeon crawler with a far slower version of Abyss' 3-D engine (it's not AS bad as it sounds, but if you play the Japanese sequel you really would not be able to go back to RM1 since RM2 is THAT much better). The main thing that makes Radiant Mythology fun is the skits you see between the various characters, many with subtle hints involving the original games' storylines. My favorite in particular is one where Arche OHKOs both Lloyd and Kratos with her cooking, them taking it overdramatically ("Kratos, go on without me! GAH! *faints*"), then Reid sneaking in and eating ALL of Arche's cooking.... and asking for more. Hardcore.

Edit: Speaking of RM1, BLATANT SELF-ADVERTISING! http://www.gamefaqs.com/portable/psp/review/R115875.html

Made that over a year ago, and for the most part contains all the opinions I have on the game. Since then I've noticed more flaws (a merciless levelling system; being just 5 or so levels above/below an enemy completely butchers your experience rate, forcing you to level in particular dungeons and only moving on when the experience starts reducing) but only thanks to Radiant Mythology 2.

Wild Arms XF is fantastic. If you're looking for a tactics game to play with a good amount of variety that will take you a decent amount of time and effort to finish then XF is your game.

I will admit there are some rough spots in the game, more so early on but things pan out trust me. You just have to stick with it. Making up strategies and skill combinations is half the fun of the game if you ask me. Man I need to get up the drive to play that game again.
