Zeno Clash was released today on D2D and steam. Its development team consists of a small group of developers living in Brazil. The game uses the Source engine; which basically means that it scales very well with underpowered and top of the line systems. The astounding aesthetic is the most obvious thing about the game at first. ![]() Much of the geography looks as if it were a surrealist's interpretation of either New Zealand or the plains in Africa. The character designs are fantastical; both based around designs studied by archaeologists and the artist's love for the extravagant. The soundtrack is dominated by drums and bass. Other aspects exist, but they are often blurred into the background or exist merely to fill in the gap between beats. While not pleasing to the ear on it works wonderfully to add a layer of brutality to the combat. ![]() Combat is the game's true focus. In interviews the devs have acknowledged that there is heavy influence from the likes of Brawlers (Double Dragon and such) and one on one fighting games. There are two types of levels: Melees, which are battles constrained to one large area that serves as an arena, where everyone battles it out to the death for whatever reasons the plot dictates. The other levels are mostly linear paths; they have been described as a first person view of the levels in a Brawler. The game takes place over several levels; in path levels you fight a large number of weak enemies and in melee a group of powerful enemies. Although it is not always everyone versus you. In fact towards the end there are often several factions engaged in a free for all. Melee does feature a target system, but you will spend maybe a 1/5th of the fight locked onto an enemy. The main advantage of it is while locked on you can dodge while in melee range. You can always block, but blocking nukes your stamina bar. With each drop of stamina loss goes a bit of combat effectiveness. When tired your hits and jaw both become weaker. The various abilities are revealed to you as the game goes on, but you can use them well before the tutorial. ![]() Weapons do infact exist in Zeno Clash and play an important role in combat. There are the firearms which do not run out of ammo, but do needed to be reloaded regularly. They do excellent damage, but in melee range they become more of a hazard than a blessing. Melee weapons exist as well, but are usually saved for fights against the larger creatures. Combat is very satisfying, even when you are taking the hits. The way the character winces and falls back feels very natural. And well, correct. Plus the noises enemies make as you crush their skulls are disturbingly pleasant at times. There is a storyline, but it exists mostly in the abstract. There are moments which are quite effective and piece together the various lines of storytelling, but it is mostly bloodlust and the strong visuals which will make players want to continue on. The game's main storyline is a little over 4 hours, but there is a huge number of levels in the challenge mode. Each individual challenge level features its own achievement and scoreboard. it's half price at D2D (10 dollars) and 25% off at Steam (14.99) Steam's version is already ready to play, not sure when D2D's will be available. |

In this dark temple or something currently. Not liking this bit too much, cause it seems a bit tedious. Needs more melee!

The torch is a brilliantly made weapon, but yeah, the level drags on for wayyyy tooo long. Only part of the game I did not enjoy, but don't worry, you have one huge ass brawl coming up. It will shake the earth
