Vampire: The Masquerade is an extremely popular and successful role playing game created by White Wolf (Now Onyx Path Publishing). It is a game of personal horror, typically with a gothic-punk vibe to it. Players usually (although not always) play as vampires (although they prefer the term Kindred or Cainite) who have been cursed with immortality and the urges of what is generally known as The Beast, the manifestation of their animal urges of hunger, fear, and rage. The game's primary concept is how the character's balance their need to survive with the sometimes awful things that they do to ensure it. If they do not adapt to their existence, their Final Death will come quickly. If they give in to their Beast, they lose themselves and become lost, nothing more than an animal.

Some of the challenges they face in this moral dilemma are
  • the machinations of their inhuman Elders who wage a long war behind the scenes called The Jyhad. These jaded relics of the past play games of political intrigue and outright violence towards each other in order to ensure their own survival. Their rivalries can extend through history and often their descendants become unknowing pawns in this eternal struggle for dominance.
  • The pressure to uphold the ancient traditions of their chosen society, such as The Masquerade, which is a global campaign to keep humanity unaware of the existence of vampires and other supernatural creatures, or the demands of their clan, a type of vampire family with similar manifestations of the curse. Sect and Clan has it's own structure and organization, so these pressures can mix in interesting and unexpected ways depending on the character.
  • The external dangers of the setting; enemy sects, rival clans, political enemies and their pawns, mortal society, and the numerous other supernatural entities that exist within the larger World of Darkness setting such as ghosts, werewolves, human mages and hunters, demons, and many more.

More information on the particulars can be found at the White Wolf Wiki page.
