A couple players have expressed an interest in adding a forum to take place during the dark ages. I personally don't have any problem with that, and I'd especially love to play a penitent Nosferatu or something.

That being said, I don't have the time or interest to do it by myself so I probably won't start it for a while, and I may never actually get around to it. BUT that doesn't mean that YOU can't. If you really want to see this become a thing, then please feel free to work together to make it happen.

All you need is a setting and to start creating plots. Send me what you write up and I'll add it to the forum. Easy peasy.

Hey Everyone. So I have taken it upon myself to start working along with Mouse to create a Dark Age's game on the forum. While I do have experience running a Dark Ages game, I don't have to much in regards to Forum based ST so I hope everyone can bare with me.

You don't need anyone's permission, feel free to have it. If you'd like to add a sub-forum for your dark ages, I'd have no issues with helping you with that. If you'd like to just use a thread or series of threads, that's fine to.

Here's a link to the most recent dark ages idea we had, but I think Rachel and I lost interest before it started. We're playing Shadowrun over skype on Saturdays instead. lol

So while we wait for Mouse to put up a sub-domain for the chronicle, I'll start posting info about it.

...Hello all and welcome to the foundation of the VtDA chronicle. I use a trust system in my games. That is, I trust you not to abuse the creation system I have in place just so you can have this untouchable walking machine of death. Being that there is no source for combat, on any level, that this is a writing board and that the goal is to have some outstandingly creative posts and SL's that everyone enjoys keeping up with and perhaps getting involved in a few, having Dr. “You can't touch this”, just isn't applicable to the growth and flow of the chronicle. Not to mention nobody will probably want to be involved with that type of character. So with that said, let's get started.

Our chronicle begins in 1230AD. Please try in every way to obtain a copy of Dark Ages: Europe as it lays everything out for the entire world. You will find an abundance of possibilities for whatever clan you choose to be, in a number of areas within the realm of the chronicle. I do have a pdf copy I will gladly send to whoever wants it

One major obstacle I have to circumvent is location. We can choose 1 country to play within or we can incorporate them all, with PC's being scattered out across Europe. My character was embraced in Scotland. His path however has taken him to many distant locations in order for me to write for him as I intended. The biggest obstacle using the world map is time and distance...remember, no fast transit yet. Dealing with this matter is relatively easy tho. A character who travels from, let's say, England to Italy will spend a certain amount of time on the journey, so you have 2 options. You can actually play out (write) the journey as it happens or simply be incognito for the specified amount of time it takes you to arrive at your destination. Player's option. There is also the use of ghouls/retainers/ or simple messengers to spend the required time to deliver a message or whatever. No one wants their character in limbo for a week or so because of travel. We can get thru this with no problems.

The first group of players are going to be like pioneers setting out to new locations. We will have to work up SL's in our respective areas in hopes that they will lure in more players who want to be involved.

I don't impose a limit to the number of characters a person has, I just ask that they don't have more characters than they have time to devote to them. There's nothing worse than a bogged down SL because someone hasn't posted for a character that is involved in the SL.

Ok, next topic. The creation process for a VtDA character is:
Attributes 7/5/3
Abilities 13/9/5
Disciplines 4
Background 5
Virtues 7
Freebie points 15

I have modified this so players with some degree of experience with VtDA and those who feel up to the challenge, can have more wiggle room when making their character.

Attributes 8/6/4
Abilities 13/11/8
Disciplines 6 ( 4 dots must be applied to clan disciplines first )
Backgrounds 7
Virtues 7
Freebie points 25

Now, adding to that I incorporate Age (vampiric age). Characters can be created as far back as, well, they've been around, so naturally we have to have limits on this. So here's the deal. If you create a character based on the stats above, all you really need in your bio/history is how you came to be a vampire. This covers ages 1 – 50 years old. If you want to create an older vampire, you can go back as far as 200 years. However, you must present a viable history as it pertains to when, where, why you were embraced, what major event was occurring at the time of embrace. In other words, you can't be 200 years old just to collect the bonuses. You have to work a little for those. And likewise, doing this could put you in the court of a powerful ruler and so on, you get the idea.

For characters age 50 – 125, you receive 25 extra freebie points. Age 126 – 200, you receive 37 extra freebie points. You will have to pay the standard rate went using freebie points to raise anything on your CS.

Now for my special little kicker!

I have devised a system that allows players to raise their discipline powers above the normal maximum, but it comes with a pretty stiff cost. At least the option is there for anyone wanting to do it. The main reason why I did this is because there are more lower gen vampires in the Dark Ages than there are In modern times. If you want to be a 9th gen whatever, that's completely up to you, but if you want to be a lower gen, then there should be some added room to do this as well, so here it is.

I recommend nothing lower than 6th, however, exceptions are possible. Now I have always looked at the different books that make level 10 discipline powers available, but according to the books, you'd have to be a 3rd gen in order to use them. So, I have come up with a way that a character can acquire the use of disciplines that are above his/her generation.
Example – A 6th gen vampire can have 7 dots in any clan discipline, a 5th gen can have 8. So, in order to make a 6th gen able to have an 8th level discipline power, a trade off has to occur. And unfortunately it is a bit costly. If my 6th gen wants to acquire an 8th level power, I have to give up 5 blood points ( permenantly), I also have to lose a dot in either humanity or willpower. This is the cost for 1 extra dot. If I wanted to get another dot for another discipline, it will cost me 2 more blood points and 1 more loss to humanity or willpower. Adding a third dot would cost the same as a 2nd dot. To take 2 dots in the same discipline it will cost you double. If you want to add 2 dots to a single clan discipline, it will cost a total of 13 blood points, 2 dots from either humanity or willpower and 1 dot from the other, plus you will take on an added derrangement plus an added flaw.
Remember, being very powerful is very costly. Minus 13 blood points, 2 points from humanity or willpower, 1 point from the other, a derrangement (not by your choosing) and an extra flaw, again not by your choosing in order to gain a 9th level power in just one clan discipline is a lot. And these costs will definantly have an effect on how you can play your character. Just think about it is all I ask.
Now this only applies to your clan disciplines. Even tho some clans have, what I call neutral disciplines ( celerity, fortitude and potence), they are bound by the same principle.
If you want to purchase extra dot(s) in a neutral disciple, it will cost 2 blood pool and 1 dot for humanity or willpower. Neutral disciplines can never exceed the lowest clan discipline.
Now for out of clan (ooc) disciplines. At the time of creation you can choose 2 ooc disciplines but they cannot have more than 2 dots in one and 1 dot in the other. You will need to show how you came to learn them in your character bio/history. More on that later. If you wish to raise an ooc discipline, well, it really costs you. 5 blood points and a dot from both humanity and willpower for 1 dot. Ooc disciplines can never exceed the lowest clan/neutral discipline.

Something to think about. :)

I mean come on, all disciplines go up to 10 dots but the only (book-way) of having that is to be a 3rd gen vampire.

That pretty much covers the standard method for making a character here. There are things that you will need to be aware of. If you go outside tonight and sit with someone and start talking about ghosts, it's a funny thing. Do it in 1230AD and evryone is bolting their doors and windows. These are a VERY superstitious people we're talking about. They all know wicked and evil things encompass the nights.

If you go out and kill a mortal...eh, no big deal really, unless they are of prominence or position. You go out and kill another vampire, it all becomes a different playing surface, ESPECIALLY if you commit Amaranth/Diablerie. You can expect nothing much short of a blood hunt on your ass. What you do in 1230 AD is seen and dealt with in a much different way than Wherever, USA, 2015. Vampires who have established domains and a contingency of mortal stock to feed off of pay great attention to anything out of the norm in their area of influence. And in some cases, the local populace knows there are dark evil things that watch over them during the night, even going as far as to set out a tithe (mortal vessel to feed upon) in order to be protected from other cainites and calamities. If you've seen the movie The Purge, that's what it's like on a nightly basis in VtDA, for the mortals at least. Also remember the only thing the majority of mortal society has is religion, and they can be very fervent about it too. It will be rare, if at all, you find people outdoors once the sun has set.

Look at VtDA as a challenge to your creativity, as a launching board of possibility. Sieze opportunity where it shows itself. Don't be afraid to try your hand at this and fail the first time out. Those of us who are familiar with VtDA will always extend a helping hand when possible. If you're new to this genre, seek out 1 or more players to start with. Remember, no one sees what you've written until you post it, so take your time and accomplish what you set out to do.

Things will start out small and slow, as time will hopefully bring in more and more players. Good writers will kindle the desire of others to get involved. It's like catching a cold, if you want more people sick, just sneeze on them. If you want more players, that them see how fun and interesting the Dark Ages can be. If you are comfortable with your character(s) and your writing, then create an SL and get started. But I will say this, just because it's a simple fact. When you don't have car keys, cell phones, computers and cable. You gotta be a little creative in order to get your SL moving, but it's easily and completely doable.

If you have any questions, just ask. Post it, email it, whatever. In hopes of hearing from many, thanks,

Doug

I've added it to the board. If you'd like to use a different visual theme for the sub-forum, toss me a link of the code or an image I can use and I'll add it.
