Lores are an interesting development in the World of Darkness and represent a characters knowledge of the supernatural entities and cultures that exist. Like any system though there are chinks in the chain and they can be used as an excuse to simply know how to kill everything. I instituted this in my own games after such an abuse and it has worked well. This is the Vampire version Your Lore's are a secondary trait of your Occult. You may not have a Lore higher then your Occult score. At creation you cannot have more then 2 points of Lore outside Kindred, Sect, and clan lore. Characters who are older or of higher status such as Elder characters may have exceptions that should be explained in the characters History. Remember that each supernatural creature has there own society are rarely casual and learning about them is often trial and error if not violent and terrible ordeals. To raise a Lore you must have activity with the supernatural society or entity that you wish to raise and you may not raise a lore higher then 1 point at a time. This is just a suggestion. |

Lores are interesting. Like any secondary discipline, the concern is how to differentiate them from the primary ability they come from. What distinguishes someone with Occult 3 and Mage Lore 2 than from a character with Occult 5? The issue how to balance it between the characters who didn't opt for secondary abilities with those who spent the XP on it. My favorite part of lores is that it helps keep a check on metaknowledge. One of my pet peeves are when characters (not the players) act like they've read the rulebook for every supernatural race and are like, "Oh, that's a Black Fury Ragabash using one of her Gifts," instead of a more appropriate, "Holy crap that Werewolf just did some weird magic-thing! RUN!" On the flip side though, I feel it's one of those things that deserves a better explanation than most abilities. As you said, it'd make sense for characters to interact with those supernaturals to gain a dot, and I'd add onto it by having to make a deeper contact for every dot higher. One dot might mean some brief interactions and observations. Five dots should be something very intimate, and in depth. |

I wasn't a particularly big fan of the secondary skills, I feel like it just cheapens the usefulness of the broad categories, and it gives even more xp sinks when WoD doesn't exactly need more. In the case of lore, I like the points Sera raises. Maybe they could be handed out as a thread reward, rather than bought with xp? Would make it easier to handle the criteria of 'how much exposure qualifies' when coming down from the top rather than the bottom. |

Honestly +1 to Cyrus. Yes, using meta knowledge can be extremely tiresome, but i truely disliked this kind of dot system. You end up with things like this for example You can go deeper and deeper and lose yourself in mechanics instead of narratives, character advancement and storytelling. Not trying to torpedo you Setharius. I am sure a compromise can be found to accommodate all sides. |

This is meant as an open suggestion. I'm enjoying that others are taking time to respond there views and ideas. I enjoy the idea of it being an award for a scene rather then a purchase. Adam, I don't think something that set in a system would work either ( as your example) my feelings are that Lore is more a generic or fluid knowledge then a standard one. ( Example: Jim and John have werewolf lore 1, Jim knows they have 5 different forms but John knows they have clans they call tribes. ) Both are basice generic knowledge but at the same time there different depending on the persons experience when the learned the lore |

I'd prefer to keep it as abstract as every other knowledge in the game and just use occult. Mouse doesn't know anything about medicine, but it would be pretty obvious if I googled something he said in a post. The same works for specific occult lore. Just use a skill specialty, make a roll for it is the knowledge is contested, and drive on. Just my opinion. |
