UNITED NATIONS HEADQUARTERS
MANHATTAN, NEW YORK CITY
July 11, 2016; 19:00 PM EDT

GBS: Breaking News at seven, with your host Benny Vermillion!

"Good evening and welcome to GBS: Breaking News, I'm Benny Vermillion. A decisive decision; the United Nations has appointed a new Secretary-General in the wake of Mr Tseng Dangun's resignation a week ago after it was revealed that the former Secretary-General had been collaborating with the Reach invaders. LexCorp owner and CEO, Lex Luthor, was appointed to the post of Secretary-General at 11 o'clock this morning following an emergency assembly by the United Nation's governing body to appoint the next head of the Secretariat following Tseng's departure. For more on this we turn you to our broadcast colleague Cat Grant, reporting live from the United Nations Headquarters in the heart of New York City."

The feed cuts to Cat Grant standing in the lobby of the General Assembly building.

"Thank you Ben, and good evening everyone! We are live at the United Nations Headquarters where just moments ago, the General Assembly has confirmed the appointment of one Alexander Joseph Luthor as the next Secretary-General of the United Nations. Mr Luthor, the incumbent CEO and owner of LexCorp since its inception, was the only candidate heavily favored by all members of the Security Council since playing peacemaker behind the unification of North and South Rhelasia, mediating the conflict between the Kingdom of Bialya and the Republic of Qurac, and most recently leading Earth's very own superheroes in a joint operation that saved our planet from total annihilation. An independent arbitrator with a vast wealth of foreign policy in addition to being one of the world's most famous business moguls, Mr Luthor's immediate appointment is seen as somewhat of an emergency action by the UN Security Council following the conclusion of the Reach Invasion in which his predecessor, Mr Tseng Dangun, had a disastrous collaboration with the alien invaders. Word from the Luthor camp has it that Mr Luthor's campaign for the office of Secretary-General began even before his interview with GBS's very own G. Gordon Godfrey. Mr Luthor's appointment makes him the first non political official and the first North American in history to be appointed to the post of Secretary-General. Mr Luthor made his acceptance speech a few hours ago detailing the goals he has set out to do as the newly appointed Secretary-General."

The feed cuts to a sharply dressed Lex Luthor standing at the podium facing the United Nations General Assembly, his magnetic presence and overwhelming charisma drawing all eyes of the world to him. His expression calm and composed as he delivers his acceptance speech before the entire General Assembly and the world.

"Mr President, Excellencies, ladies and gentlemen,

I stand before you, deeply honored and touched by your generous words of congratulations and encouragement. With boundless gratitude for the confidence placed in me by the Member States, and with an unswerving resolve to honor that trust, I humbly accept the appointment as the 9th Secretary-General of this great Organization, our United Nations.

Distinguished delegates, by completing the appointment of the next Secretary-General with such alacrity, you have opened an unprecedented opportunity. Despite the insufficient time that I was given to prepare, I will use this opportunity nonetheless to consult widely on how best to proceed with our common agenda of reform and revitalization. I will listen attentively to your concerns, expectations and admonitions.

Distinguished delegates, I am deeply honored to become the first North American in history to lead this Organization. It is quite fitting that you have now turned to North America to guide the United Nations through it's eighth decade. North America is well defined, structured, yet diverse, and has led the way for taking on the greater responsibilities for the world. Having come so far and rising still, we continue to lead the world's the full range of achievements; culturally, politically, and technologically. It is also here on this very soil where we defied the will of our extraterrestrial invaders and cancelled the apocalypse.

The surge in demand for UN services attests not only to the UN's abiding relevance but also to its central place in advancing human dignity. The UN is needed now more than ever before. The UN's core mission in the previous century was to keep countries from fighting each other. In the new century, the defining mandate is to strengthen the inter-state system and more importantly the inter-planetary system so that humanity may be better served amidst new challenges. The road that we must pave toward a world of peace, prosperity and dignity for all has many pitfalls. As Secretary-General, I will make the most of the authority invested in my office by the Charter and the mandate you give me. I will work diligently to materialize our responsibility to protect the most vulnerable members of humanity and for the peaceful resolution of threats to international security and regional stability.

In order to meet these growing mandates and expectations, we must engage in the most sweeping reform effort in the history of the Organization. The very scope of the reform has taxed the attention and energies of both the delegations and the Secretariat. But we must stay the course. We need to muster the human, institutional and intellectual resources, and organize them properly. We should do our part in meeting the Millennium Development Goals, the expanding peace operations, the threats posed by terrorism, WMD proliferation, HIV/AIDS and other pandemics, environmental degradation, the imperatives of human rights, and the possible threat of future extraterrestrial incursions.

If we act wisely, and work together transparently, flexibly and honestly, progress in a few areas will lead to progress in many more. Only the Member States can revitalize this Organization but I will always be there to assist and facilitate as needed. My heart is overflowing with gratitude toward my country and people who have sent me here to serve. It's been a long journey from my youth in an impoverished Metropolis slum to this rostrum and these amazingly incredible responsibilities. I was able to make this journey because the UN stood as a beacon of hope during my darkest days. It gave me hope and sustenance, security and dignity. It showed me a better way, and what it means to be a citizen of this beautiful world.

I earnestly hope that young children of today will grow up knowing that the UN is working hard to build a better future for them as it did for me. As Secretary-General, I will embrace their hopes and hear their appeals. I am an optimist and I am full of hope about the future of our global Organization. Let us work together for a UN that can deliver more and better.

Thank you for your kind attention."

The feed cuts back to Cat Grant still standing in the lobby of the General Assembly building.

"We tried approaching Mr Luthor for further comments regarding his appointment but neither the media including us were able to do so as he was in a hurry to catch his next flight out of the country perhaps en route to another of his diplomatic endeavors. Nonetheless, we at GBS would like to express our heartiest congratulations to Mr Luthor on his appointment and wish him the best of luck with the responsibilities that lie ahead of him. This is Cat Grant, reporting from New York City. Back to you, Ben."
