The Sun ran a story that Shakespeare was gay due to the fact that he at one point in one sonnet, of the 4000 he wrote, describes the Dark Lady as manly. Seems a bit tenuous to me. On the transvestitism, all women were played by men at the time, so even Juliet was a guy in drag (although they did use particularly effeminate men for the more romantic figures). As Shakespeare acted as well as wrote and directed, he would have dressed as a woman occasionally, but I've never heard of any evidece that he did it in his private time. I guess I need to say something interesting. The biggest mass murderer of all time was an Indian woman who strangled passers-by with a scarf as they wandered through a lonely mountain path. She killed about 900 people, and was hanged around the turn of the century. |
