Welcome to the Global Right Alliance's forums!

Firstly, you can only see a very limited amount of the forums at the moment. You will be able to see the full forums and properly participate in our region and its community when you register.

Now, on to the region itself. Don't let the name, specifically the "Right", fool you. We've got members from across the political spectrum, and our political parties have always reflected this. The Global Right Alliance (GRA), as primarily a gameplay region, has been everything from an anarchy to a monarchy to a homegrown rotatorship. The region has had such governments because of its culture, which adores political intrigue and thrives on confrontation. With the increase of the region's population, many veterans have returned. It is the beginning of a new Global Right Alliance and a new government system.

I know the forums can be quite intimidating; there's people who have been here for nearly a decade and have over 10,000 posts. However, we welcome new members and encourage them to get involved. If you want help finding your way around, we have resources to help you to get on your way.

The treaty of Versailles was extremely harsh on Germany due to its blatant hypocrisy. Self-determinism was a great idea, but it was utterly pointless when at the same time parts of German territory populated predominantly by Germans were being given out to other countries as reparations.

The war guilt clause (Article 231 I think) was also unduly harsh. Although the 'blank cheque' guarantee went a long way towards making Austro-Hungary declare war on Serbia, Germany alone cannot be blamed for turning what was originally just another war in the Balkans into the global conflict it became. Undoubtedly Germany wanted war, but so did most of the other countries in Europe.

Theres other stuff as well like the reparations never really allowing the Weimar republic to get off the ground. :D

The Treaty of Vienna in 1815 was not harsh at all to France and 5 years later France and Britain had strong links with each other. This gives the assumption that if the Treaty of Versailles was not harsh and humiliating then the question of the Second world war starting would come in to context.

It depends how you are measuring harshness. Do you mean in the sense that they didn't deserve it, or in the sense that , pragmatically speaking, it caused trouble?

In the former sense - possibly not too harsh, no. The Germans had been planning to start a war since 1912, as documents released later clearly showed. They were just waiting for the Kiel Canal to be finished. The Serbian affair gave them a good means of kicking the war off. Of course, they never expected the war to turn out as it did, and were still stuck in the 19th (or 18th) century mindset that war was i) glorious and ii) relatively painless. But whatever their thinking, they started it and they deserved to be on the sticky end of things.

But the more pragmatic view is that the harshness of the terms were unhelpful and even instrumental in kicking of WWII, so it was the wrong thing to do. I would also agree with that, and I would personally judge that to be a more important consideration than what Germany did or didn't deserve.
