Welcome to the Global Right Alliance's forums!

Firstly, you can only see a very limited amount of the forums at the moment. You will be able to see the full forums and properly participate in our region and its community when you register.

Join our Community

Now, on to the region itself. Don't let the name, specifically the "Right", fool you. We've got members from across the political spectrum, and our political parties have always reflected this. The Global Right Alliance (GRA), as primarily a gameplay region, has been everything from an anarchy to a monarchy to a homegrown rotatorship. The region has had such governments because of its culture, which adores political intrigue and thrives on confrontation. With the increase of the region's population, many veterans have returned. It is the beginning of a new Global Right Alliance and a new government system.

I know the forums can be quite intimidating; there's people who have been here for nearly a decade and have over 10,000 posts. However, we welcome new members and encourage them to get involved. If you want help finding your way around, we have resources to help you to get on your way.

Review

This is a captivating, witty story of the 'Great Re-labelling' of American language and thought from a master linguist, broadcaster and popular intellectual. Modern linguistics has become a leading edge of the political fight, and in America, the right is winning the (re) presentation battle time after time. The Republican Party has become harder, meaner and better at getting out the message. The Estate Tax became the menacing "Death Tax", cutting down pristine woodland became a campaign for "Healthy Forests" and a contentious education initiative hid under the comforting (and memorable) blanket of "No Child Left Behind". But, Nunberg shows that even with their catchier phrases, the Right didn't actually persuade voters to trust them more on healthcare, education or the environment. They weren't trying to. They had a much more dramatic ambition: to change people's minds so that the issues that favoured the left became "issues" no more. "Climate Change" sounds like an expression of the vagaries of the weather forecast. Where's the politics in that?Nunberg charts the way in which the Right's use of language has encouraged Americans to forget what they believe in, and to assume that it doesn't matter any more. It has been a brilliantly successful campaign. And, the Right had prepared a new language to fill the void, a language that favoured them almost exclusively and tortured the Left by tying them in knots. Nunberg has written a captivating and outraged story of what he calls "The Great Re-labelling" of American language and thought. Written with wit and insight, passion and indignation, this is a book for anyone who's concerned that what they say might not be what they think, whoever they, or we, are.

not available at my library...

how about something like:

Scars of war, wounds of peace : the Israeli-Arab tragedy /
by Ben-Ami, Shlomo.

or:

The case for peace : how the Arab-Israeli conflict can be resolved /
by Dershowitz, Alan M.

I was hoping for something a bit current.... :Dunno:

Why does it always have to be non-literature? We could use a break from our day with something more soothing...

Hmm... well, could we spread out the topics to let everyone enjoy? What i mean is like break down the books to certain categories and rotate month to month between fiction, nonfiction and even within there could be political, drama, horror, etc... i mean everyone has different tastes, why not diversfy a little?

The original idea was that as this is a political region then the books should have a political slant.

I'm not sure. I think afew more literary novells might appeal... Although considering the membership we have attracted books with a political slant should be used more times than not... IMO

How about

"GRA Book Club" :D

Seriously it is what I posted at the very start but people who joined later might not of known that.

If everyone wants to broaden the scope of the books then why not.

However when choosing the books we should be aware that we cannot please everyone.
