| Welcome to the Global Right Alliance's forums! Firstly, you can only see a very limited amount of the forums at the moment. You will be able to see the full forums and properly participate in our region and its community when you register. Join our Community Now, on to the region itself. Don't let the name, specifically the "Right", fool you. We've got members from across the political spectrum, and our political parties have always reflected this. The Global Right Alliance (GRA), as primarily a gameplay region, has been everything from an anarchy to a monarchy to a homegrown rotatorship. The region has had such governments because of its culture, which adores political intrigue and thrives on confrontation. With the increase of the region's population, many veterans have returned. It is the beginning of a new Global Right Alliance and a new government system. I know the forums can be quite intimidating; there's people who have been here for nearly a decade and have over 10,000 posts. However, we welcome new members and encourage them to get involved. Imperium by Harris, Robert? History/Drama/Politics When Tiro, the confidential secretary of a Roman senator, opens the door to a terrified stranger on a cold November morning, he sets in motion a chain of events which will eventually propel his master into one of the most famous courtroom dramas in history. The stranger is a Sicilian, a victim of the island's corrupt Roman governor, Verres. The senator is Cicero, a brilliant young lawyer and spellbinding orator, determined to attain imperium - supreme power in the state. This is the starting-point of Robert Harris' most accomplished novel to date. Compellingly written in Tiro's voice, it takes us inside the violent, treacherous world of Roman politics, to describe how one man - clever, compassionate, devious, and vulnerable - fought to reach the top. 'Sometimes it is foolish to articulate an ambition too early - exposing it prematurely to the laughter and skepticism of the world can destroy it before it is even properly born. But sometimes the opposite occurs, and the very act of mentioning a thing makes it suddenly seem possible, even plausible. That was how it was that night. When Cicero pronounced the word "consul" he planted it in the ground like a standard for us all to admire. And for a moment we glimpsed the brilliant, starry future through his eyes, and saw that he was right: that if he took down Verres, he had a chance; that he might - just - with luck - go all the way to the summit...' |

I got Imperium and started reading. Not too bad but the author expects the reader to have a clue on most of the Roman names and on how the Senate works. A little more background info would be good. |

Yeah Robert Harris is one of the few authors I would call a true Genius. I loved Imperium perhaps even more than his other works. The level of detailed research he weaves into his books is really quite extraordinary. Dan Brown is only other author that I think can rival Harris in this area and even he is leagues behind. Although, now I think about it, it might be a little confusing for someone new to acient Rome. But I think proper research makes such a difference. Whereas other writters, attempting to create something like this, may break with plausibility Harris is able to really create a picture. The world described for the plot to unfold in really is true to history as far as possible when consider fiction of this sort. If you like Harris you may want to try either; Archangel or Pompeii. Pompeii is again quite marvelous. Archangel is also above average. |
