You are very misinformed. How many thousands of people want to be healthier but can't because of location or income? Trans fat affects the poor and the poor cannot help it. Let alone middle-class me can't get any food on the road that isn't Dunkin Doughnuts or McDonalds. I don't see how you can claim your right to eat something that was put into your food unnecessarily without any say from you or anyone else; save the people in the corporate conference rooms who decided to slip it in in order to cut costs. ------ EDIT: Trans-fat isn't only in French fries and pizza and whatnot. It's in pretty much all processed foods save for the brands that come from health-food stores. Did you have a say in it? No. |

Then let's all line up and have our little toes cut off because they dont contribute to your body's well being either. That is about as stupid a statement as what you said Dantes. And I have been very upset about the Patriot Act and its renewal since the beginning. And if the Gov't was really concerned about our body's well being alcohol and cigarettes would be outlawed, but that is not going to happen because too much tax dollars are gotten from sin taxes and too many contributions are made to Congress by the companies who produce the cigarettes and alcohol..IMO this is just the gov't 's way of appeasing its conscience. |

Is anyone familiar with the FDA's regulations on similar issues? I wonder if there is a legal parallel here legitimizing the prohibition of food additives that are hazardous and which can be easily replaced. |

If invented today then, Yes, they would be outlawed IMHO. But they were not and have become part of the culture and so would be very difficult to proscribe. |

The analogy to toes doesn't work Obana4. Toes are unnecessary but they don't also cause harm and stack up more miserable years at the end of your life going in and out of emergency rooms for bypass surgery. -------- And L&H, you are absolutely correct. If invented today, alcohol and cigs would probably be banned. --------- Estion, I a relative who work in the FDA. The organization is basically at the mercy of the food industry (ALOT of intentional loopholes to regulation, won't go into it now) and I know ALOT about what disgusting things go into food [for instance, did you know that the calcium in calcium-fortified drinks comes from the bones of sickly cows that die early of disease? or that cows that are kept packed in cages for the last few weeks of their lives are forced to eat their own s***?]. That relative even did an inspection in a large corporate chicken farm and described utter squallor with some chickens just lying on their backs dead from sudden heart attacks thanks to their fatty diets. You know? The food industry is somewhat doing the same to us humans. |

I'd become a vegetarian (I'd still eat fish though) if there weren't so many dietary issues in my family. Food allergies (wheat, dairy, latex, peanuts, and tree nuts dispersed among various members of my family, plus some kinds of tropical fruits that come in the latex allergy package). You know? This is probably why I'm left-wing. Living with these dietary restrictions made me realize how incredibly dependent we are on corporations, as I have a much smaller range of brands I can eat than most people through no fault of my own. |

about 23 years ago I was sent to a Chicken plant and following that a Pig plant and I witnessed scenes of abject suffering and cruelty. In the chicken plant there was a pile of dead chicks the reached twice my height but .. they were not all dead and were chirping from the mound ... In the Pig plant I was and witnessed physical abuse on the poor unfortunate creatures who were about to die. I know farmers who have a lot of respect for their animals and would be horrified to learn this was going on. |

Disgusting. EDIT: Let alone pigs are supposed to be more intelligent than dogs. Alot of people aren't that passionate about animal rights issues. But you know? Alot of how we treat animals is a reflection of how we treat humans. Most religions on earth are against animal cruelty to some degree, and there's a reason for it. |

Arov, regarding your earlier response to my question on the FDA: What I was getting at here was the availability of similar regulation of food products as a means for justifying or attacking the trans-fat ban. My initial thought on the matter was that a municipal ban on transfats probably isn't a substantial departure from the sort of regulations promulgated by the FDA or other executive agencies in governing the quality of our foodstuffs. The shallow capture of FDA by the food industry is a separate matter, though certainly a serious one. I agree with you on this point, but it wasn't quite what I was saying. |

There aren't any. I can tell you that. Any regulation that WOULD justify it has all these weird internal loopholes that were put there intentionally. The only thing the FDA requires companies to do is label trans-fats. But of course that does nothing about the problem. http://www.fda.gov/oc/initiatives/transfat/backgrounder.html Anyway, trans-fat occurs naturally in very small quantities in beef. The vast majority of it (the kind that people eat the most) is artificial.
lol And of course the FDA has the power to keep corporations from slipping that harmful stuff into your food. But no. |

1.Yes, I'm very misinformed on my opinion that I should be able to eat whatever the hell i want.... Asshole. There are ingredients and nutrional facts. If I honestly cared what I ate, I would be able to look on the ingredients and see partially hydrogenated blah blah is in it, is a trans fat, and is claimed to have negative health effects. So, maybe I had no say in what went into it, but I can choose not buy such products. There is even an alternative. All those hippies and environmentalist sell organic food now. 2. Your horror stories of the bad conditions: Guess what? I don't care! I don't give a flying fuck what happened to the cow that has become my juicy filet mignon. All I care is that its done to my liking, tastes good, and doesn't make me sick. And no meat has ever made me sick. So, whatever the hell they do to the cows and chickens and pigs that eventually end up on my plate isn't killing me... And even if it was, I have the choice not to eat meat. |
