Welcome to the Global Right Alliance's forums!

Firstly, you can only see a very limited amount of the forums at the moment. You will be able to see the full forums and properly participate in our region and its community when you register.

Join our Community

Now, on to the region itself. Don't let the name, specifically the "Right", fool you. We've got members from across the political spectrum, and our political parties have always reflected this. The Global Right Alliance (GRA), as primarily a gameplay region, has been everything from an anarchy to a monarchy to a homegrown rotatorship. The region has had such governments because of its culture, which adores political intrigue and thrives on confrontation. With the increase of the region's population, many veterans have returned. It is the beginning of a new Global Right Alliance and a new government system.

I know the forums can be quite intimidating; there's people who have been here for nearly a decade and have over 10,000 posts. However, we welcome new members and encourage them to get involved. If you want help finding your way around, we have resources to help you to get on your way.

I'm having a hard choice with this issue:

The Issue
Scientists using cloned human embryos for research are on the verge of a medical breakthrough.

The Debate
"It's really very exciting," says lab head Akira Gutenberg. "Until now, we've kept very quiet, to avoid being targeted by lunatic fringe groups who for some reason think it's wrong to clone human embryos. It's too early to promise anything, but we hope that one day we will have genetic cures for a whole range of debilitating illnesses. I certainly hope the government will support our work."

"Well, if you have to be part of a lunatic fringe group to object to this barbaric practice, I'm a lunatic," says placard-waving protestor Beth Hanover. "Of course it would be nice to cure these unnamed diseases, but at what cost? They're messing with the sanctity of human life. It's wrong, and the lab should be shut down immediately."

I generally dismiss it. I sympathise with the position in the first response, but don't like the last sentence - which commits your government to funding the research.

Indeed. I also wish they gave you an adult-stem cell option, as that is less ethically charged.

Cloning people is a questionable idea. Not for the funding, as I never have problems with a gov't funded program (thus my nation's 100% tax rate). It'll eventually lead to selective breeding. We've already seen that without genetic guarantees, but we'll see it even more.

I went to a public lecture last year which touched upon this subject (I believe the video of it is available on the web somewhere, but I don't know where. I tried to find it before 'cos I ask a question in it). The lecture was on biotechnology and genetics, and the guy said that he believed there would emerge a division in the human race, as those who could afford it would have become more and more technologically adapted (his example was someone like Jordan (for non-Brits, she's a glamour model who has had endless plastic surgery). We're seeing this begin with plastic surgery, but this would expand into other areas. The technology for enhanced organs and so forth allowing a person to live indefinitely is already in progress. If you're interested in this, read Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood (it's a great book).

A little off topic I know, but I thought it was interesting enough to be worth a mention.

Basically if you want your government to be more socially advance select option one. If you want your nation tax tax not to go up further, select the second option.

Thats usually how I decide on issues, how it will affect my nation WA rankings.
