A piercing shriek rang across the yard and echoed through the halls of Storm Hold, startling the horses and the dogs. The hounds began to bark, and in turn the frightened horses whinnied and snorted, stableboys rushing to calm the steeds, shouting at the dogs and generally contributing to the cacophony.

In her solar, Lady Angelis and the maester looked up sharply from the sheaves of parchement spread across the meeting table. Ser Ryk was on his feet in an instant, Ser Dancy only a heartbeat behind.

"Seven Hells," the grizzled Castellan spat, "that was my daughter."

Angelis was getting to her feet, Dancy already at her side, hand on the hilt of his sword. Ryk was looking to her, pleading, "go," she whispered urgently, waving him towards the door. The older man broke into a run.

"My lady," Ser Dancy was taking her by the elbow, "let me escort you back to your chambers."

She pulled free, moving towards the balcony, her Captain of the Guard trailing protectively behind. The solar's balcony looked out to the west, over the bogs and forests that eventually led to the sea. There was little beyond the wall encircling the keep proper; the carpenter's shed and lumber yard, a piggery, butcher, the new Sept with its seven walls and the hut where the Septa lived. The yard was on the other side of the keep, the side towards the road, if it could be called that, leading off to Torrhen's Square.

Returning to the table, "thank you maester, we can continue tomorrow."

"As you wish, m'lady," he gathered up his ledgers and papers, and shuffled from the room.

"Stay, Dancy." she moved to her desk, seating herself and indicating for her handmaiden to attend her.

Hiding a smile, "of course, my Lady," moving to her side. As the handmaiden left the room, he brushed Angelis' braided hair forward over one shoulder, caressing her neck with gloved fingers.

Though she shivered, turning and taking his hand in both of her own, she frowned and shook her head at him silently. A moment later, when her handmaiden returned, their hands parted, Lady StormWolfe turning away from the knight. She accepted the cup of mulled wine the girl handed to her, Ser Dancy declining the offer with a murmur and a gesture.

Angelis was pulling her cloak around her shoulders, indicating for another cup of the warmed wine to be poured, when Ser Ryk entered, his daughter in tow. She was an attractive young girl, courtly and demure; as well as learning the ways of a highborn girl in the Keep, Storm Hold's Septa had been grooming her in the way of whispers.

"Come, child," Angelis called softly, reaching out with a small hand and beckoning for the girl to approach. Her father urged her forward, perhaps a little roughly, though he meant no unkindness.

Raising a delicate maiden had not been easy for the aged Castellan, after a lifetime of toughening up raw soldiers and fighting battles, a daughter was the last thing he had been prepared for. The girl had been abandoned in his arms by a crofter's daughter, known amongst the soldiers to take a coin or two for a night spent warming her bed.

The aged soldier had never taken a wife, regretting that he had left romance far too late in his life. The mewling infant certainly had his eyes, nor would he have questioned the woman's claims had the child clearly not been his, but before he could even put his thoughts in order, the woman was turning to go. Septa Tyana offered to find the wilful mother of his child, but Ser Ryk had declined, raising Melara, named for his sister, as best he could.

All of Storm Hold had turned their hand to help raise the little girl, the Septa especially taking an interest, teaching her much about the proper ways of a lady. In another year or two, she would be sent to another court for fostering, and already it was clear how much her doting father would miss her.

Angelis took the maiden's hand and held it firmly, comfortingly. "Now tell me, what frightened you so badly?"

The girl's lip trembled, her eyes as large as saucers, "I saw a beast most horrifying, my lady. It was huge, like a bear," she exclaimed, Lady StormWolfe squeezing her hand, "and it had great shining teeth!"

Pressing her lips together, the Lady of Storm Hold turned the terrified girl back over to her father. Worry furrowed her brow as the elderly Castellan led his daughter away, "a child's active imagination, I'm sure," Dancy soothed.

"Perhaps, but she saw something. We must find out what."
