With the college season getting into the swing of conference schedule and the NBA right around its mid point, coming up on the All Star game, I thought it was time to start up a mock draft with the rising of new potential stars for the upcoming draft class. A couple notes before I get started, I won't be using lottery percentages and draws, I'll go 1-10 by win percentage. Also, im assuming all players eligible to enter the draft will be declaring, meaning players like Embiid who are considering another year will be included here. With that said, lets get started. #1 Overall: Milwaukee Bucks Currently 8-35 .186 Win% Notable Players: Brandon Knight, OJ Mayo, John Henson, Nate Wolters Selection: Joel Embiid, C, Kansas If the Bucks end up drafting with the first overall selection, I believe they should take the best available player, being center Joel Embiid. The Bucks are not stable at any positon, so they could go many ways here but I believe that grabbing a potential All-League type center is the best move. Embiid has been hyped as "The next Hakeem Olujawon" and rightfully so, I mean hell, he learned all his moves by watching an old VHS of the Dream himself. Sticking Embidd into the current Bucks lineup would improve their rebounding significantly which is something they desperately need. Knight-Mayo-Caron Butler-John Henson-Joel Embiid would be able to make a run at a low playoff seed in the awful East. Embiid continues to develop his offensive game, with his great footwork and has recently shown off a bit of a mid range game, showing how quickly he has grown while at KU. I honestly believe Embiid will be one of, if not the best center in the league within 5 years. #2 Overall: Orlando Magic Currently 12-33 .267 Win% Notable Players: Victor Oladipo, Aaron Afflalo, Nikola Vucevic, Maurice Harkless Selection: Jabari Parker, SF, Duke Right back at the top of the draft, the Orlando Magic, if selecting second, should take small forward Jabari Parker. The Magic are the only team around the top of the league that I believe should take Parker over Embiid because of the young talent of Vucevic. Parker is a do it all forward who will fit in well with the unselfishness of Oladipo that could potentially lead the Magic back to the promise land. At the beginning of the season, Parker's shot selection was questionable to say the least, but he was still able to effect the game with his elite passing skills and quality defense. As conference play has picked up, Parker's points per game average has raised several points to 19.1 which would be first all time for a freshman at Duke. If Embiid stays at Kansas, Parker's elite passing, good rebounding and defense at his position and his improving offensive game should put him at #1. #3 Overall: Philadelphia 76ers Currently 14-31 Win% .311 Notable Players: Michael Carter-Williams, Nerlens Noel, Evan Turner Selection: Doug McDermott The city of brotherly love isn't looking to good this season and a mature, scorer like McDermott would bring a nice dimension to another team who struggles to score. In his 4 years as a Blue Jay, Dougy has continued to improve different aspects of his game each year. He can in pretty raw other than quite the jump shot, but he has improved his post and perimeter defense, helping him become one of the more versatile players on the defensive end in the NCAA, as well as improving his handling and rebounding significantly. McDermott would slide in with MCW and Turner in the backcourt and provide much needed shooting to a team so desperate for that. #4 Overall: Boston Celtics Currently 15-31 .326 Win% Notable Players: Rajon Rondo, Kelly Olynk, Avery Bradley Selection: Julius Randle, PF, Kentucky With the 4th overall pick, the Boston Celtics select, Julius Randle from the University of Kentucky. Randle may be undersized as an NBA power forward at 6'9", but he is a beast on the rebounds. He is one of the few players in the NCAA right now who you can count on to get you a double double every night. He is an athletic freak, able to turn and face for driving moves against less athletic posts but also strong enough to bang in the post. He reminds me of Shawn Kemp a bit, using his athleticism to overpower people for offensive rebounds and furious dunks. With a lineup potentially of Rondo-Bradley-Green-Randle-Olynk next season, along with all the other draft picks the Celtics own, the C's could be looking at a very bright future from their young big men. #5 Overall: Utah Jazz 15-29 .341 Win% Notable Players: Trey Burke, Gordon Heyward, Enes Kanter Selection: Andrew Wiggins, SF, Kansas I know, not to many big shakeups so far in my mock but these are highly considered the top potential NBA stars at this point. Wiggins hasn't blown me personally away in his freshman season at Kansas, but he is still a natural talent who has the skills to be a big time player in the league at either shooting guard or small forward. What he does best is score, which is something the Jazz desperately need. He can take it to the rim and finish around the giants, shoot mid range and 3's as well as shoot a respectable percent from the line. Although he seems to try to "take over" games by himself at this point in his career, this is something that can be coached out of him, which Bill Self has been working to do. If Wiggins pans out to be even half the player he is hyped to be, the Jazz will have quite the future with him in the starting lineup around the other young talent they have. #6 Overall: Sacramento Kings Currently 15-28 Win% .349 Notable Players: Demarcus Cousins, Ben McLemore, Isiah Thomas Jr Selection: Rodney Hood, SF, Duke The other small forward from Duke, Hood has been skyrocketing on draft boards all over the country due to his recent play in the Blue Devils recent wins. Hood, who transferred to Duke from Mississippi State to Duke this year, has shown that he can dominate games similar to the bigger names of this class. He is a great shooter and driver and can play defense well enough to guard some of the 3's in the league already. His size at 6'8" 215 pounds is easily league ready in the case. His passing skills are worse off than Parker's, but most small forwards don't pass like he does. He scores in bunches and gets hot quick and when you need it but isn't gonna give it back on the other end of the floor. Hood will fit right into the Kings lineup with the other potential stars they have and I can see them making some big time noise in the West here in the next few years as Hood, DMC and McLemore continue to develop and learn to play together. #7 Overall: Los Angeles Lakers Currently 16-29 Win% .356 Notable Players: Kobe Bryant(IR), Pau Gasol(UFA), Nick Young, Rob Sacre ![]() Selection: Marcus Smart, PG, Oklahom State Speaking as a Lakers fan, if we drafted seventh and ended up with Marcus Smart, I would be more than ecstatic. Smart is a sophomore who could've been a top 10 pick if he left as a freshman but decided to stick around to pursue a National Championship. He has an NBA ready body at 6'4" 220 pounds, he gets to the rim and finishes with ease, is one of the best point guard defenders the NCAA has to offer right now and is an elite passer. He provides all the things the Lakers have needed for so long 1. A player who can defend the quick point guards of todays Western Conference and NBA as a whole 2. Somebody to get the ball out of Kobe's hands to help him move off the ball to create easy opportunities 3. Somebody who can get their own shot if Kobe is being locked down or having an off night. Smart would fit directly into the Lakers starting lineup and would help them get back to what is expected by Lakers fans yearly. #8 Overall: Cleveland Cavaliers Currently 16-28 Win% .364 Notable Players: Kyrie Irving, Luol Deng, Tristan Thompson, Anthony Bennett? Selection: Gary Harris, SG, Michigan State Cleveland's Andrew Bynum expirement failed and there isn't a big time true center that would be worth taking at this pick, as I don't believe Willey Caulie-Stein is good enough to deserve a top 10 pick, so I decided to give Irving a quality backcourt mate in Harris. Dion Waiters is becoming more of a bench player at this point, with the ability to backup the 2 and 3 spot, leaving the 2 spot open for Harris to slide right in. Harris is one of the most unselfish players in the league, he could dominate more than he already does but with players like Adrian Payne and Keith Appling on the Spartans, Harris doesn't need to score. He can effect the game with his hustle for rebounds at shooting guard and his fantastic perimeter defense. He is no slouch though on offense and with height like Harris at 6'4", Harris can rise over a good portion of the 2 guards in this league. His size, athleticism and stellar defense earn him the 8th overall pick in this year's draft. #9 Overall: Detroit Pistons 17-27 Win% .386 Notable Players: Josh Smith, Andre Drummond, Brandon Jennings Selection: Dante Exum, PG, Australia At #9 overall and after the failed attempt with Jennings throwing the ball into the stands, I mean playing point guard, the Pistons get an absolute steal with Exum at #9. Exum is an Australian prospect, who has played against the worlds best while representing his country in the World Championships and Olympics. Exum is a pure point guard, he is an excellent ball handler and an even better passer. Exum fits in perfectly with the Pistons who need to replace Jennings badly if they want to make any leaps in the East. Exum has the potential to step in with the other weapons on the Pistons and average 9+ assists per game from day one. He is also a good perimeter defender and only has room to improve on the offensive end. Exum will be one of the best picks of this draft if he goes to Detroit. #10 Overall: New York Knicks 17-27 Win% .386 Notable Players: Carmelo Anthony JR Smith, Tyson Chandler Selection: Noah Vonleh, PF/SF, Indiana After the Bennett pick by the Cavs, I think all teams should be weary picking a swing type player like Vonleh, but Vonleh has shown at Indiana he can effect the game best mostly at power forward, which is where I expect him to play in the league. He will be able to stretch the floor and provide extra space for Melo and Smith to work. Vonleh reminds me of a player like Chris Bosh for the Heat, who can step out and make plays shooting, driving or passing while not being the #1 option. He has a knack for defensive boards and making the right play. Vonleh may never make an All-League team but will be a fantastic glue type player who will constantly be around successful teams due to his ability to make every play possible, all with his power forward size at 6'10" 240 pounds while playing in the post of on the perimeter. I might try to make some more of these closer to March Madness, the end of the NBA season and the draft lottery and see how things shake up in the standings or with player rankings. |

Shit I wish Exum would fall to 9 but that's really unlikely. I like everything but McDermott at 3, Exum at 9, Smart at 7 is kinda late for the best point guard in the class as well. I think the 76ers are more inclined to take Randle if they get the chance to. Him and Noel would be a great 1/2 and Noel would really make up for Randle's lack of defense. |
