We all know the hotbeds of where NBA stars come from... big cities like Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia are all main examples. What about the areas you wouldn't think of? Here's the Top 5 cities producing NBA talent that were in the NBA last season. Criteria: All of these players I put below were born/grew up within 50 miles out of the main city area. [5] Oakland, California/Surrounding Areas ![]() Who would've thought that the Bay Area has produced so many great NBA players? From Jason Kidd to Ray Allen to Matt Barnes, this area is full of those guys you love to cheer for and support their whole career. It doesn't stop there, players like Drew Gooden and Kevin Martin are two solid players from the Bay Area who are gritty, tough players good at what they do. This area may not have many stars(Ray Allen and Jason Kidd are the only 2 players who will likely ever be considered for the HOF in this group) but every team needs role players and every team would die to add in the guys I listed above along with Ryan Anderson, Deshawn Stevenson, Leon Powe, and Eddie House. Quite a list of tough, gritty guys who have alot of heart and give 110% every time they are out on the court. [4] Cleveland, Ohio/Surrounding Areas ![]() Cleveland is known for the city that lost LeBron and where the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame is located, not for being a city with alot of fantastic players in the NBA growing up in the city and on the outskirts of the 47th most populated city as of a 2010 census. Not only LeBron James grew up just an hour out, but sharpshooter Michael Redd and superstar Point Guard Stephen Curry grew up in C-Town. Add in other solid players like Kosta Koufos, O.J. Mayo, Earl Boykins, and Daequan Cook and this city looks to be a solid producer of NBA talent. [3] Newark, New Jersey/Surrounding Areas ![]() I'm going to assume everyone on the forums that aren't from the area in New York or New Jersey have no clue where Newark's located. Newark is on the eastern side of New Jersey, just off the border to New York, just across the bridge to being in Brooklyn and New York City. Enough about the geography, this team's all about the bigmen. Andrew Bynum and David West both grew up within the comfy confines of the New York border city. New York Knick J.R. Smith is also a part of this group, along with Al Harrington and Randy Foye. Randy Foye was quoted saying that when he was a kid, "'Basketball saved my life.'" This talented group of players ranks 3 on my list of unusual origins of NBA players. [2] Seattle, Washington/Surrounding Areas This team in Seattle has the MOST talented role players of all... lead by Brandon Roy and Jamal Crawford. Add in talented guards Rodney Stuckey, Aaron Brooks, Jason Terry, and Nate Robinson to this group and you think, wow, this city must have some great mentors for their youth. Then you move onto the bigmen. Marvin Williams and Spencer Hawes are two solid West Coast players from the Seattle area. When people think of Seattle, they think of the Space Needle and Starbucks, but this city actually produced many valuable role players in the NBA today! [1] Washington D.C./Baltimore, MD/Surrounding Areas DC is a star studded city known for government and tourists... Kevin Durant, Carmelo Anthony, and Rudy Gay are just three players from this city. Add in up and coming Point Guard Ty Lawson and bigman Ed Davis and you've got five solid players now. Then, you can add in Jeff Gree, Delonte West, Michael Beasley, Gary Neal, Jarrett Jack, Thomas Robinson, Patrick Patterson, and Sam Young and you've got a city full of amazing players whether they are stars or just great role players, this is the #1 unknown city that produced all star NBA players. Got alot of my information from various webpages on Bleacher Report and Basketball-Reference. Edited by Donny, Aug 12 2013, 01:43 AM.

I did some research on Melo and KD particularly. Melo was born in NY but moved to Baltimore when he was 8, which is within the criteria of DC. AND Yeah Rog, I got alot of my info from Bleacher Report and Basketball-Reference but all the wording is mine and I had to make sure everyone had ties to the city I put them down on. |
