Nonetheless unless they directly conflict with his own Richard will generally accept others beliefs so long as he recognizes a similar passion in them. In Combat Richard exhibits many aspects of the knights of yore, preferring a fair fight when possible while nonetheless recognizing that it isn't always possible. History: Despite being born on Earth, Richard remembers little of his few years there before his mother and father elected to head for outer space among with waves of other willing immigrants who sought a new life on the ever expanding frontier of mankind's civilization. Most of Richard's childhood was spent uneventfully in the recently finished Nirvana Colony in the still-in-development L3 area. During this time Richard developed a fascination with classic tales of romance, glory, loyalty and honor; he yearned to be like the dashing heroes who's very will sustained them against impossible odds. Yet even he had to admit he did not understand such heroes, his life lacked anything besides perhaps his family that ignited his passions.. In his mid teens Richard's father, a respected botany geneticist, was elected by Veda to be a part of the Martian settlement project. The Family soon departed alongside many others planning never to return. Though initially upset at being forced to leave his hitherto home and friends It was on the is voyage that he met a friendly girl of his own age, Alice Prothe; The two struck up a strong and immediate friendship that would last the long journey. Though much of this trip was spent studying along with other children of the various researchers and engineers, to the point that they would qualify for Bachelor's Degrees and Space Engineer Licenses by the time they turned 20; The two spent endless hours talking. As the Martian One began accepting civilians Alice and her father, Xander Prothe, went their own way as the material Engineer needed to over see the construction of future domes. For about a year Richard followed his own parents about, as they worked to optimize the Colonies' air purification systems and agricultural domes. Durring this time the young man was constantly fighting the feeling that something was now lacking without Alice around until he could no longer stand it. Shortly before he turned 22 Richard announced his intentions to find his childhood friend and, in turn, marry her. His parents ever cautious, patient people counseled him against such a hasty choice but Richard was already certain. He had finally found something he felt worth pursuing a Romance which he, in the folly of youth, felt to be timeless. Leaving without his father's blessing Richard soon found his way to the newest of the Martian domes, still under construction, where he and Alice were reunited. She, as well, had felt his absence acutely though she had remained to support her father, who it seemed had turned colonizing mars into a personal ambition. However even as the couple looked forward to their wedding tragedy struck. The section of agricultural dome under construction collapsed taking part of the connecting tunnel with it. Alice's father and half a dozen other workers were killed in the incident. Richard himself was close enough at hand to hear the man's last words. A heartfelt request to finish his work, to turn mars into humanity's next home. Though Richard himself lacked the talents to accomplish this his fiance who'd watched her father for years could. However, unlike her father, Alice was interested in more than infrastructure; creating a home, she said, was about filling a structure with life. In turn after finishing the newest surface city, Alice became it's governor. Many years and two children later war loomed over the Family as Mars prepared to revolt. Alice, worried that losing a war would cost her people their freedom and her the position she felt necessary to really carrying out her father's wishes, imposed a draft for all males over 17.
