The ZERO System
The ZERO (Zoning & Emotional Range Omitted) System is a cockpit technology for interfacing the mobile suit pilot’s brain with the mobile suit's computer. It is a scaled down program based on the RAVE Program penned by the late Dr. Resha Valentine-Klamsky.
System Description and Characteristics Initially equipped to the five prototype mobile suits of the Triumvirates, the Gundam, the ZERO System significantly improves the pilot's reaction times as there is no need for traditional visual interfaces. Furthermore, thanks to the advanced computations performed by the computer, the pilot can become aware of future outcomes and possible courses of action that can be taken to achieve total victory or even total defeat as well as death.
However, due to this direct brain interface, the system will cause the pilot to vividly "hallucinate" all possible courses of action available as well as the projected results whether it will lead to his absolute victory or certain death. As the pilot tries to figure out what is going on, the system overloads the brain with too many statistics and estimated values, causing temporary insanity as the human brain cannot process so much raw data.
History A.C. 179 Renowned computer programmer and Quantum Physicist, Dr. Resha Valentine-Klamsky, introduced a conceptual framework of a highly ambitious and advanced computer program that will endow the leaders of the colonies with unparalleled powers of foresight.
A.C. 181 After giving birth to her first child, Resha continued piecing together her unnamed program with the help of her beloved husband, Engr. Oswald Cromwell-Klamsky. And after two years, Resha simply called the program as Project RAVE or RAVE Program; derived from combing the first and last letters of her maiden name.
Project RAVE is a highly advanced and complex computer program that aims to provide the duly elected democratic leaders of the colonies the ability to make informed and objective decisions that will ultimately lead to a peaceful and sustainable living within the colonies in stark contrast to the tyrannical rule of the aristocrats in most UESA member nations. The RAVE Program collates and processes vast amounts of external data then computes the results of possible courses of action, narrows down the best possible choices and results before presenting it to the end users, stakeholders and decision makers. This provides the end users unparalleled foresight and addresses the major flaw of a democratic government in cases when incompetent leaders were elected to office.
The program was designed to be transparent yet fool proof to avoid external influences and manipulations so that it can provide an objective, unbiased causes and results to the end users. The program was based on the foundation that a democratic form of government will be used by the colonies where the voices of people are taken in the highest regard.
A.C. 183 Certain individuals who read the position paper circulated by the Resha among the top brass of the colony approached the doctor and suggested that Resha make a scaled down version of the program that can be installed to mobile suits. Resha strongly rejected the idea stating that the RAVE Program is a tool for peace, not for war. Resha then continued to lobby her proposal to the top brass of the colonies.
A.C. 184 Project RAVE was slowly gaining popular support especially when its basic concepts were ‘accidentally’ revealed to the public.
The pacifist Heero Yuy, personally approached the Klamsky couple in a secret meeting. In the meeting, Heero argued that due to how ambitious the Project was, which involves full integration of all the systems of the colonies into the RAVE Program for data gathering and the vast amount of preliminary data that was needed to be inputted in the system that will serve as its foundation for its complex computations (which incidentally involves the entire history of mankind), it cannot be done as of that moment. The resources of the colonies were simply tied up in sustaining its citizens and in expanding to other colonies. He also noted that hardcore extremist within the colonies might use and twist it for their personal war efforts. As such, Resha was finally convinced to cease the development of Project RAVE.
A.C. 187 Dr. Resha died after acquiring a virus in Colony L2-V08744.
Widowed Oswald Klamsky was approached by certain individuals and offered funding for Resha’s defunct Project RAVE provided that he will develop it first for military use to help the campaign against the Alliance. And when the colonies finally win the war, full implementation of Project RAVE across all colonies will be supported. Oswald agreed and he was assisted by his eldest, Emir Klamsky, in rewriting the RAVE Program and in building a Quantum supercomputer.
A.C. 189 The father and daughter tandem was able to create a scaled down version of the RAVE Program that can be installed on mobile suits. Said program was called as the ZERO (Zoning & Emotional Range Omitted) System Mk. 1.0. Emir volunteered to become the first test pilot for the ZERO System and several test revealed the negative drawbacks of using it.
A.C. 192 The ZERO System Mk. 2.0 was completed and was handed over to the Triumvirates. Test piloting continued with Ravel Klamsky as the lead test pilot.
A.C. 195 The Gundams, equipped with the ZERO System, were finally deployed.
Technical Guide Information The ZERO System was developed to be an interactive interface between a human pilot and a Mobile Suit. The system computes the results of possible courses of action, and the pilot considers these and mentally feeds directions back to the system. The system is programmed to think tactically, so that the options that it feeds the pilot include civilian death or unnecessary destruction. It is up to the pilot to guide the system and lend it a conscience, so the relationship becomes a balance of emotion and logic.
Another advantage of Zero System is its ability to offer physical stimulus back to the pilot, allowing him to feel the strain that the MS is undergoing. This causes great physical and emotional stress on the pilot, but allows the MS to become an extension of the pilot's thoughts and movements. Due to the extreme mental strain on its users, ZERO System could never be used on a wide scale. It can literally tear a users mind apart if they are not strong willed.
Variants ZERO System Mk. 1.0 The prototype version of the ZERO System used by the first test pilot Emir Klamsky.
ZERO System Mk. 2.0 This modified system provided better and more detailed information than its predecessor. However, these improvements came with a price; just as the benefits were strengthened, so were the flaws. While the original ZERO System merely urged its pilot to follow certain courses of action, Version 2.0 actually forced them to follow these paths.
