For all you active DnDers out there, I've had a few of you express interest in playing in a campaign based off my upcoming book: Knight in Exile - The Lost Heir. For future reference so I can begin the research / writing of said campaign, I want to know which time era of the story you would like to experience. Below is a list of those time eras and a brief glimpse and idea of what it'll be about. All of these campaigns will be short, possible five to ten sessions at best. That however depends on the players and if I wish to extend it further. All campaigns are based off the Knight in Exile universe, but it remains spoiler free of the first book. The Herald Era: "Long ago, as ancient scrolls describe it, it was a time where a great war erupted and scattered the lands of Indriul. The Heralds fought against a great force, a man known as Maverian Thalos. He was one that mastered the art the Heralds though as an abomination of nature: the ability to bring the inanimate to life. It was a war that destroyed much of the known world during that time. In fact, it was the very war that created the Frozen North. The last battle during what came to be known as the Herald War ended on the plateau of the traveling castle Zalimerez. There Maverian Thalos did battle with the five great Herald sorcerers. They destroyed Thalos countless times but his magic brought him back with a new body until, at last, with great effort and the cost of the very essence of their life, they drew the Stone Heart from Thalos' chest: the only way of ending his life, and his magic. Zalimerez fell from the heavens that day and lodged itself between two mountain peaks somewhere within the vast mountain range in the east. There it still resides, with the lifeless body of Thalos frozen in time. With his sorcery gone and the war ended it brought about a closing to the age of the Heralds. Angered by the war, the commoners shunned and outlawed magic. They drove all that still practiced the art to the far North, which had become a barren wasteland of endless winter. To this very day, they reside in secrecy, guarding the Stone Heart." -Reynul, speaking to Elena about the Herald Era. The Herald Era is a time where magic was abundant. The easiest way to describe this era would be to say it is similar to a "Surreal" game. Ten years before The Lost Heir: Anemlia's Reign: “…The Lady Sorceress has ordered me to send a small century of men toward the walls of Durl. Is she daft? We need to wait for our siege engines before advancing any farther. I saw a group of men with kegs of black powder drawing lines in the forest. What could our Lady be planning? I relayed the message to my lieutenant to rally the men…” - Captain Braend …The skies fell and brought with it fire and stone. I saw nothing but endless ruin surrounding the walls of Durl. The sound of the cranking death machines that lay outside our barricades keeps me awake in the night, if not the stale feeling of the inevitable. And where is Yerlan? Have they left us to challenge these devils of men? I will not live past this; I will not see another dawn. (From the journal of a gatehouse guard The Fall of Dulmain) ...Thus the end of the King of Erodela and the rise of a tyrant. Nine uneasy winters pass and the Queen’s thirst is yet to be satisfied. Terrible times, the times of old where history has disappeared with the elders. Yerlan remains safe as those beyond the barrier falls. How long until the Serpent Queen reaches the gates of Semrie? How long until the screams of the slain reach King Aralandar’s door? (From a scribe of the Royal Library of Semrie The End of Peace) After the murder of King Sorin, Anemlia, the flame-haired sorceress, ascends to the throne. With the ambition to reunite the lands since the time of the Herald War, Anemlia sends her armies into the kingdoms of Certun, Dulmain, and Sennite. This campaign will allow the players to experience exclusive backstory not discussed in the first book and is best described as a "War" campaign. Two years beforeThe Lost Heir: Sands of Raganori "Farther east beyond Certun is the Raganori Desert beyond Buckler Mountains. What would the Lady Sorceress make of conquering sand dunes? Make a mountain of glass and salt?" - Relmond, Layce's assistant. Become a descendant of the Wardiraga, the Sun Keepers. Certun has fallen, the remaining warriors of the Certun Manus are forced to flee to Semrie. Only a few stand at the ruins of Certa while others flee to the Raganori Desert. You are the last true Certanian Monks, and you won't let Brakel's army take your lands while you still draw breath! Make your own legend as unsung heroes of the Certun Kingdom. To play this campaign you will have to meet certain character requirements. All characters will be Monk/Swordsage variants. Casses will be modified by DM after creation to better improve gameplay experience. No supernatural schools for Swordsage. Players will start at level 5. This type of campaign would be best described as an "Adventure" Campaign. During the story of The Lost Heir: A Desperate King Since Dulmain fell, the soldiers have been busy cleaning up remnants. I hear Yerlan has been in dire need of troops. Their lines grow smaller with each day. It makes me wonder though. Yerlan is not a small kingdom and thus their numbers should be able to surpass that of Erodela, who have been campaigning since the death of Sorin and the rise of Anemlia. -Reynul "...their recruits are far too green to fight for very long, let alone survive one or two battles, as if that’s new. Numbers are only one factor of an army, after all. Looks like Erodela will be invading Yerlan full out once Hailguard falls. Ever since they encamped north of Illma, they’ve only stretched out farther. It won’t be long until the entire Yerlan barrier is crawling with those black armored pawns and the black banner hangs from Hailguard’s remains.” - Arret King Aralandar, ruler of Yerlan, now has the battering rams of Erodela at his doorstep. The Bridge is all that separates Erodela from Yerlan. In the absence of your Lord, the defenses of Hailguard, a fortress carved into the side of a mountain, have fallen into your hands. This is where you will make a stand to keep Anemlia's Black Dragoons from slaughtering your people. Characters will be restricted to nonmagical classes. This campaign would be best described as a "War" campaign. Characters will start at level 5. Other Rules: Humans only. Characters that have magical classes (if campaign permits) outside of the Herald Era must meet special requirements. Will explain as needed. No Psionics Classes chosen outside of PHB must be discussed with the DM prior to creation. All characters, unless specified by the campaign, will start at level 1. Maximum of 5 players. Players cannot buy or start with magical items unless allowed by DM. Will elaborate more later... Tell me your thoughts. |
