So I can't run Steam, or copy any files from my External. I doubt I could run any other programs. I haven't really tried yet. I can delete things, but why would I do that? The other night, the external stopped, or something, making a clicking sound. I was asleep, so I couldn't turn it off like I'd done before. Since I can't copy anything, is there some other way I could save files? Edit: No programs run. |

I had a similar problem with my original external. It made a clicking/beeping sound, turned out the hard drive stopped working. There is a chance that you may have to replace it. I'd wait to make sure though... |

Does it click constantly, or every time an attempt to access the HDD is made? A clicking HDD almost always means there's a mechanical failure in one of the motors; either the one controlling the read heads, or the one spinning the platters. If you can get inside your enclosure, you should be able to replace the HDD itself without the expense of getting a whole new external unit. As far as saving files, the only folks that could do it if you have a mechanical failure would be a specialized data recovery center. They would actually take it to a clean room, remove the platters, and backup the files in a specialized machine. VERY expensive procedure (I've seen some in the range of $200 per GB, and they always copy the entire thing, due to file fragmentation). |

It's only started clicking two or three times. The first time nothing went wrong. I didn't suspect anything was actually wrong, the clicking never happened to me before on anything. I can still access some files... I just can't run any programs. |
