Last time on Peyton Place, 2008:

*We caught up with the community of Peyton Place, and reacquainted ourselves with the descendants of some of the town's most famous characters. The familiar ones that we remember are Selena Cross-Drake and Betty Anderson (originals from the novel) and Rita Jacks Harrington (from the TV series). We also are introduced to Megan Noyes, the daughter of the late Allison MacKenzie Noyes.
*The story's main villainess, Jennifer Harrington immediately sets her sights on newcomer, Mark Hanson.

Watching out of the front window of her Elm Street office, Megan Noyes was worried about all the fallout that was coming. She had found out from her steady boyfriend, Dr. Jonathan Danielson, that Mark Hanson was finishing up a meeting with the city council to bring his family's corporation's headquarters to Peyton Place.

"I heard though that someone tried to scuttle that," Megan said to her adopted mother, Selena Cross-Drake, as she sipped her coffee. Megan and her adopted mother had just finished lunch in the flat above the paper and the two were relaxing with coffee in Megan's office. "Did you hear anything about it?

"I didn't, honey," Selena said, "but your father said that it was a Harrington who nearly demolished the sale."

"Surely not Patrick and Rita?" Megan said. Although she hadn't known a lot about the Harringtons, until she had come back to Peyton Place after her parents died, her mother, Allison, had known them, and when she was younger, she told her all about Rodney and Leslie and what they had done.

"No, not them," she said reassuringly, "Patrick and Rita are busy keeping things well for Harrington Industries; and they are willing to work with the Hansons. I think it has to be Jennifer who threw the wrench in the works."

"I would agree," Megan said, "Christie said that Jennifer had screamed during school that she was going to be in love with Mark, as she felt that she was perfect for him, as she is a Harrington."

"That was exactly what everyone is saying," Selena said, "but don't worry, darling, the Hansons sound like they will stay in town anyway. So, don't worry about that."

"Well, at worst, Jennifer won't have me as competition," Megan grinned, "I am too much in love with Jon to worry about her." Megan and her boyfriend, Dr. Jonathan Danielson had been in love ever since she moved to Peyton Place.

"I am glad, sweetheart," Selena smiled, and checked her watch, "Where does the time go? I had better get back to the store, but Dad and I are coming over to your house, and we'll have dinner for you. Christie has to work tonight, and she is eating over at Hyde's, but we'll be over and we can make some dinner for you."

Megan's sister, Christine Drake, worked as the manager of Bits and Bytes, the new Internet Cafe located on Elm Street, not that far from where Megan worked.

"I would love that, Mom," Megan said, "thanks. I love you." She hugged Selena.

"That goes double for you from Dad and me," Selena gave her daughter a kiss and waved as she stepped out onto the sunshine of the late August day.

Meanwhile, Jennifer Harrington was sitting in her spacious bedroom, and was gloating about all the trouble she had caused at school. Sure Tina Williamson; Julie Carter and Linda Cross weren't speaking to her, but she didn't care. She made it clear to that loser, Christine Drake, that SHE, and nobody else, had the right to talk to Mark Hanson.

Her stupid parents thought that she was too young for him. What did they know?! She was nearly 18, and it didn't matter to her that he was 28 years old. Of course, they were worried about the gossip that would float around.

A sharp rap on her door shattered her reverie. "Come in," she said.

"Jenn, aren't you supposed to do your homework?" her father, Patrick Harrington, asked.

"I've been done with my homework for hours," Jennifer said, "check it over."

Patrick did so, and she was right, it was completely finished. "Ok," he said, "where are you going tonight?"

"Dad, it's Friday," Jennifer said, "I don't have any school until Monday. I'm going out and having fun tonight."

"That is fine," Patrick said, "but I don't want to hear any trouble out of you."

Jennifer was relieved when her nosey father finally left the room. She knew that she had to put the kibbosh on Kevin Johnson. He was the biggest hurdle to her obstacle of getting Mark to fall in love with her. Kevin's father worked at Harrington Blankets, and she had to get him to understand that he was not her boyfriend. Mark Hanson WOULD be, when she was through with him.

However, at the gazebo on the Courthouse green, Kevin Johnson was waiting, checking his watch. He was highly impatient. He had hung out at Mudgett's Hardware, then at Bits and Bytes, where he had checked his e-mail and helped the manager, Christine Drake, with a computer problem; and then he waited at Prescott's Pharmacy until he went to the town's gazebo. He sat down on the bench which was inside. He looked at Peyton Place, and to his mind, it seemed to never change.

From his vantage point at the gazebo, he saw the area around Elm Street and Maple Street. Three blocks down the way from the main intersection of town, he saw the High School; and then the area where the former Elementary School was. He turned to look at the shops on Elm. The Thrifty Corner Apparel Shoppe, which had been in town for many years, was still a vital store, with Christine's mother, Selena Drake running it.

The Bank of America, which had been called the Citizens National Bank for many years until the president, Dexter Humphrey's death, still maintained a large and commanding presence on Elm. He saw Prescott's Pharmacy, across the street from the bank; down the street from the pharmacy and next to Hyde's Diner was a new business that kind of baffled Peyton Place. There was a new internet cafe called Bits and Bytes, in the spot where Mudgett's Hardware used to be. Mudgett's had moved up Elm Street a few blocks, near Walnut Street.

On the highway leading out to White River, there was a Wal-Mart that had been opened in 1994, which was quite unusual for Peyton Place, and there had been some ugly talk about that for months. However, they had been persuaded to build; and it did a brisk business, without taking any money or business away from the downtown area.

Tuttle's Grocery store's fate was uncertain after the death of Ephraim Tuttle, but Aaron and Wanda Langschwandt had bought the store, expanded it, and made it a supermarket. It was located on Elm, close to Cedar Street. The supermarket was open 24 hours a day, and was ultra modern. Wanda continued to run the store even after Aaron's death, which was mysterious at worst. The case had never been solved.

She had hired a new manager named Joe Harrison, and he was doing a fantastic job. Wanda never remarried after Aaron's death, and she did an excellent job in raising their son, Timothy on her own.

Tim was a handsome young man, who aimed to go to law school. He worked hard at the market, and did an excellent job. He hadn't fallen for a girl, and it was rumored that he was gay. Wanda knew that he was gay, and didn't fault him for it, but it was always a temptation for people who were less than honorable.

Some time later, Jennifer Harrington languidly came over to the Gazebo. Kevin glared at her, "It's well about time you got here!" he snapped, "what the hell took you so long?!"

"Not one word out of you, stupid," Jennifer said callously, "I suppose you were busily waiting for someone else?!"

"Why not," Kevin said coldly, "You've been itching to sink your hooks into Mark Hanson since he moved here! How can you be so stupid?! He's older than you are."

"I don't care what you think, you stupid vermin!" Jennifer screamed, "I am in love with Mark Hanson."

"Keep thinking that," Kevin said harshly, "Keep thinking that, and sooner or later, you'll believe it!"

"Don't you DARE say anything about what I am doing to Mark," Jennifer threatened, "or I will fix it that your dad loses his job, and you know I can do that too!"

Kevin glared back at her, unfazed by her bluff, "You want to blackmail me, Jennifer?" he said angrily, "then I will personally go and tell your grand lover, Mark, that you and I had sex together at Road's End!"

Jennifer looked stunned, it wasn't often that she was struck speechless. She knew Kevin well enough that he would do it too. As tough as she was, he was even tougher.

"All right!" she snapped, "I'll relent for now, but you better not even TRY to mess this up for me! With Mark married to me, I will be richer than my stupid grandmother, Betty Anderson!"

Jennifer flounced off to Prescott's Pharmacy and went in. This was the break that Kevin was looking for. He had the conniving Jennifer over a barrel here. Luckily for him, he parked his car, near the courthouse. He got in, and drove down Elm Street to an apartment complex on Depot Street.

The train depot had been refurbished, and was now a Greyhound bus depot. Until that time, the bus met at Prescott's Pharmacy. Up the street, on the former site of Evelyn Page's house, was a new apartment complex, where Mark Hanson lived.

He buzzed Mark's door, and Mark opened the door. He was happy to see him.

"Did she cause you any trouble, Kev?" Mark asked as he took him in his arms.

"She tried to blackmail me," he said, as he gave him a kiss, "but I think we have her number."

"That we do, my love," Mark said, as he kissed him with passion, "I talked with her parents, Patrick and Rita Harrington. Very nice people, they are, nothing like their daughter, and they passed a message on to you that your father's job is safe, and Jennifer has NO say on that, whatsoever."

Kevin melted in his lover's arms, "Thank you, honey," he said, "wouldn't that be a real turn if that stupid Jennifer found out about us?"

"I know, it would be a great comeuppance for her," Mark admitted, "but I think she could really make our lives miserable. Megan Noyes told me about what she did to that city council member and his husband."

"Yeah, Meg is pretty wise on things that go on around here. It's funny, she is about the last person around here who would even consider gossip, but yet, she knows all about the things that goes on in town, due to her working on the paper," he said, thinking of how admirable Megan was, being independently wealthy and running a newspaper all on her own from the age of 15, "You remember Meg's mother, don't you?"

"Yeah, I do, Allison MacKenzie Noyes, the famous author," Mark said, "my family was friends with Allison and her husband, David. Allison wrote Samuel's Castle; and that was a powerful read. I think Meg told me that she read her mother's book before she died. That was so bad for her to lose her family in one blow. If not for Jonathan Danielson, I don't know how Megan would cope."

"Well, she also has her adopted family," Kevin said, "her mother's best friend, Selena Cross-Drake adopted her, and Betty Anderson, another friend of her mother's keeps an eye on her too."

"Isn't Betty related to Patrick?" Mark asked.

"Yeah," Kevin said, "Patrick is her grandson. Her son, Roddy Harrington, is Patrick's father."

"Maybe Roddy could be helpful in getting a rein on Jennifer, and leaving us alone," Mark said.

"I can call Betty Anderson, and see if she can help," Kevin said.

Kevin did so, and Betty had a feeling that Jennifer was up to no good. "You can be assured that I will keep your secret, honey," she said, "and I will talk to Roddy to see if he can help keep her under control."

Betty then picked up her cell phone, and called Roddy.
