It is one of the biggest cities in the country. Second largest city in Texas; home of the Cowboys, the Mavericks, and the Stars. Companies such as American Airlines, Texas Instruments, and the Belo Corporation make their home here. It is also the battleground where cheating partners are exposed for their crimes on the long-running reality show, CHEATERS. Where does all this take place? It all happens in Dallas, Texas. Known as Big D; it's a city that is bigger than life, even more so than Houston, the largest city in the state. Dallas is the larger of the two anchor cities (Fort Worth is the other) of the sprawling eleven county metropolitan area called The Metroplex. On Interstate 20, headed east towards Dallas were a blond haired man and a dark haired woman. They were driving back to Dallas, where the blond man was from. The man was named Gary Ewing and he was on his way home. With him was his third wife, Karen. He and Karen had known one another for years, since they were neighbors in California. He had been married twice; and so had she (both times she had been widowed). After his last divorce from Valene, with whom he had three children, Lucy and twins, Betsy and Bobby II and after the death of her second husband, Mack MacKenzie; he and Karen, with some help from Valene, had begun dating, and they got married at the same time as her son, Michael who had married Kate Whittaker. Now, Karen was very nervous about being on Southfork Ranch. "To quote your brother's first wife," Karen laughed, "they are going to throw me off that ranch!" "And to quote my brother," Gary smiled, "don't be silly. You are family. You are a Ewing." "I am so glad that Valene allowed us to get together," Karen said. "She will always be a good part of our lives," Gary said, as they car headed towards the Dallas suburb of Braddock, where Southfork was located. Meanwhile, JR Ewing was glaring at the newspaper. His ex-wife Sue Ellen and his son, John Ross were discussing oil variances. It pleased JR that John Ross had gone into the oil business, like he had, but it angered him that it was Sue Ellen with whom he was talking to about oil business. She and his younger brother Bobby were owners of Ewing Oil, and JR no longer worked for the firm itself, but was on the board of directors, an idea which had been extended by Sue Ellen and Bobby. "Sue Ellen, I demand you talk to me!" he ordered. Sue Ellen looked coldly at her former husband, "JR, I am no longer married to you," she said, "and if you don't mind, John Ross and I are talking about some crises at the office. With the Libya situation, we don't know about what the price of oil is." "Mom's right, Dad," John Ross said, "with all this uprising in Libya, the oil prices can be fluctuated and we're watching prices very closely." JR understood. "That sounds about what would happen with Libya. Very crazy." "We'll keep you in the loop," Sue Ellen said to JR, "now leave us be." The doorbell rang. "I'll get it," shouted Lucy, JR's niece. "DADDY!" Lucy cried out, "when did you get back to Dallas?" "Just now," Gary smiled, "you remember Karen." Lucy smiled, "Karen, great to see you again," she said. "Very nice to see you too, Lucy," Karen hugged her stepdaughter. "Where are Bobby and Betsy?" "They are coming," Valene said, "Bobby went to get Betsy from dance class." "We just got in, Mom," Bobby said. Bobby was the spitting image of his mother, and had the makings of a real rancher. He and Christopher, his cousin, spent a lot of time going over the ranch, with his father, Bobby. Bobby also handled the books for the Ewing family fortune. Betsy, meanwhile, was a real lady, much like her Aunt Sue Ellen. She was very much into trying to take care of the home, much like her grandma Ellie. It was a treat for her, Lucy and Bobby when her Grandma Clements, Lilimae Clements, had moved into the house at the request of Valene. Lilimae had met Miss Ellie, and the two women cared about one another, and Lilimae had been at Ellie's side when she died. Sue Ellen and John Ross came in. John Ross, despite his love of the oil industry, wasn't as amoral or conniving as his father. He could be cutthroat, because of the nature of the oil industry, but at home, he was very sweet natured. "Uncle Gary," John Ross said, "great to see you again, and you too, Aunt Karen." "You too, John Ross," Karen said warmly, giving her nephew a hug. JR glared at Karen. He had dealt with her a couple of times, when he went to Knots Landing and intimidated Gary. JR was surprised though, when he stood up to him. "Welcome home, Gary," JR said, a phony smile on his face. Gary, who wasn't fooled by JR, smiled an equally phony smile at him. Ray Krebbs, the head of the ranch, came in, and took Valene's hand. He and Valene had been a great couple for several years. His marriage to Jenna Wade ended when Jenna divorced him and then moved to Milan with her daughter, Charlotte. "California had to have been good to you, Karen," Sue Ellen smiled, "How's the rest of the family?" "It was, Sue Ellen," Karen said, "it was very nice to see Michael and Kate. I talked to Meg, and she is enjoying UCLA immensely. She is still planning on staying in California, but that is depending on what Michael and Kate do. They are doing wonderfully. They are talking about coming out here to live too, but it could well be after Meg graduates, and all three will come together." JR winced, provoking a glare from Bobby. Wasn't it bad enough that Gary was there, and now Karen's family was coming as well?! "Knock it off, JR," whispered Bobby furiously, knowing that JR would have said something nasty. "Bobby's right, JR," Ann, Bobby's wife, glared at her brother in-law. "All right," JR snarled. He couldn't stand it that Ann could throw her weight around. She was as tough as nails and determined as Bobby's first wife, Pamela. JR had hated Pamela with a passion, and he hated Ann even more. Hours later, JR was drinking a bourbon and branch at the bar, when Karen came over. "I saw your petulant act a little bit ago," Karen smiled an acid smile, "and whether you like it or not, I am a Ewing now, and you had best know that I won't put up with your little digs, your schemes and your snide comments towards my husband. Yes, Gary is MY husband. I know what you did to him. Valene told me all that you did, and don't forget, I saw what you are capable of. Well, get this, JR, I am wise to you, and that means you had best watch your steps!" Karen flashed him a triumphant smile, and walked out. JR was not known for defeat, but he was sure he could get rid of Karen. (Stay tuned for more!) |
