It was a warm day in Dallas, which was not surprising. After several months of over 100 degree heat, the ranch was feeling the pinch of it. Ray, the foreman of the ranch, a position he has held for many years, was busy trying to get hay to the cattle, so they wouldn't starve. His two half-nephews, Christopher Ewing and his cousin, Bobby the second, were helping him.

"You boys are doing a great job," Ray said approvingly, "with your help, we can get things all taken care of."

"Dad said, they are working to come up with some water reserves," Christopher said.

"Bob," Ray said to his nephew, "I know this is not what you usually do, but thanks for helping us out in this way."

Bobby smiled, "It's my pleasure, Uncle Ray," he said, "it helps out and it gets me out in the outdoors."

Ray grinned, "Even this hot?" he said.

Bobby laughed, "Even then!"

Meanwhile, back in the house, JR Ewing glared at his former wife, Sue Ellen Lockwood. JR had never gotten over the idea that Sue Ellen was now half owner of Ewing Oil.

"I want words with you, Sue Ellen," he snarled.

Sue Ellen glared at him, "Lest you forget, JR," she said icily, "we are NO longer married. So, thereby I am NOT under your orders!"

"When you are living in my house you are!" JR snapped.

"Don't presume to throw your weight around with me, JR," Sue Ellen said angrily, "I moved in here because Lilimae asked me to move in, after I left Don!"

"I suppose Don threw you out because of your drinking?!" JR sneered.

"You BASTARD!" Sue Ellen exploded, "I haven't had a drink in years! All those years of being in that sanitarium dried me out! But it's not my drinking that angers you, is it? You're still angry that I have some influence on John Ross, isn't it?!"

JR snarled, "John Ross is MY son! He works in MY company, thereby I don't appreciate your influence on MY son!"

"You're right on only one count," Sue Ellen sneered, "John Ross is your son, but that is all. I am STILL his mother, and I also own Ewing Oil. Bobby and I BOTH own Ewing Oil, as you know, and you are only on the board of directors, which we allowed out of sheer generosity! John Ross runs the company well, you DID train him well in the oil business, but he also learned from me and Bobby. So, you can take your self righteousness and get out of here. I am going to go meet John Ross and we're going to meet Bobby to talk about this situation with Libya."

JR shot a blistering look at Sue Ellen, "I will get John Ross out from your influence," he said angrily, "and I will get Ewing Oil back. You and Bobby will NO longer be there."

Sue Ellen shot him a vicious look, "I wouldn't bet on that one," she said furiously, "I don't see YOUR name on any of the owning shares of the company! So, don't go saying things you can't back up!"

With that, Sue Ellen stormed out. JR looked like he had been floored.

Hours later, Karen Ewing had come in, she had been planting some flowers in Miss Ellie's former garden. After Ellie had died, Karen and Lilimae had made the garden look wonderful again, but the wilting heat was affecting the garden as well. Just then, the phone rang.

"Karen," Ann Ewing, her sister in-law said, "there is a call for you. From someone named Annie."

"Thank you, Ann," Karen said, and took the phone.

On the other end, Annie Fairgate, Karen's former stepdaughter, was waiting to talk to her. After her disastrous visit to her father, Annie had returned to Philadelphia. She had taken it hard when Sid, her father, had died. And then, as if that hadn't been enough, her mother, Susan, had gove abroad in Europe, and she died there. Now, Annie was totally alone.

"Annie?" Karen asked.

"I had to call you," Annie said, "you're the only one I have left."

"I heard about your mother," Karen said, "I am sorry."

"It was nothing unusual," Annie said, "Mother died where she was happiest."

"Where are you?" Karen asked.

"Back in Philadelphia," Annie said, "I am finishing taking care of things with Mother's things. After that, I don't know."

"Well, I have an idea," Karen said, "why not move to Dallas."

"I've been there before," Annie said, liking the idea, "you live there now?"

"Yes, I do," Karen said, "actually, I know what it is like to lose someone. I lost my second husband a couple of years ago."

"Mack," Annie said, "I remember Michael telling me about him."

"Yeah," Karen said, "after he died, Valene, you remember her, right? She and Gary got divorced, and then she brought him and I together. We married a few months ago. After we married, we sold the dealership, and the house. Then we moved here to Dallas."

"So, you and Gary are married?" Annie said, "That is WONDERFUL. Congrats."

"Thank you, Annie," Karen said, "so, will you come out here?"

"Yes, I will," Annie smiled, "I think it's time we made a new start, you think?"

"I do too," Karen said, "I can't wait to see you."

"Me neither," Annie said, "See you soon. And Karen? I do love you."

Karen was astonished. It was the first time since she had known Annie that she had heard her say that.

"I love you too, Annie," Karen said, and hung up the phone.

Unfortunately, JR chose that moment to come in. "What are you doing here, Karen?" he snapped.

"Talking on the phone with my stepdaughter," Karen said archly, "or is that a crime here too?"

"I would suggest you stay out of my way, little lady," JR said venomously.

"And I would suggest this, JR," Karen said just as venomously, "I know how you operate, and I warn you, don't take me lightly. You tried that once, in Knots Landing, and you found out how dangerous I can be. I wouldn't advise you to do the same thing to me on your own turf. I have your number, dear brother in-law, and I will not hesitate to bust you on it!"

Karen smiled acidly at him, and walked off.

JR went over to the bar and got him a scotch and soda. He couldn't drink the hard stuff but only once in a while. He couldn't believe it. Sue Ellen told him off, then now this Karen tells him off. He couldn't believe that he was dealing with two strong women!
