It is a town that goes by many names. It is one of the most historical cities in the Dakotas. For many years, it was the Territorial Capital of the Dakotas, and then it was also one of the famous places Lewis and Clark came through on their expeditions. It is a small city, but has a lot to do; while it is also thriving, it is also known for its power and energy. It is Yankton, the Mother City of the Dakotas.

We flash back to 1989, at Mount Marty College, the only college left of two in Yankton. (Yankton College closed in 1984, and is now a Prison Camp) Four young women are sitting at the Roncalli Student center. Stephanie Weiss is smiling at her three best friends, whom had all met when they were freshmen at Mount Marty in 1985. Stephanie was from Vermillion, which was not far from Yankton, and her family, who had ties to the University of South Dakota, were astonished that their daughter would go to the more private and more expensive Mount Marty, but they understood. Jennifer Preusse was the smartest of the four. She achieved academic awards and was always on the top of the Dean's lists. She wanted to be a professor, and she was taking graduate classes. Mary Jo Taylor was the more spiritual of the four, and she threw a lot of her energy into the Church, since her boyfriend had been killed in a car crash their freshman year; and Kristin Youngworth, a girl who was the only one of the four who was truly local. Her family was a large name, especially in the days of Yankton College. She had so wanted to go to classes there, but when it was closed, she accepted the chance to go to Mount Marty, although she herself was not Catholic.

Because of the closure of Yankton College, which had been a big part of her life, Kristin was kind of bitter and sullen. Not just because of the loss of power and prestige that had been a part of her life, but of a lot of other things. Mary Jo was more introspective, since she was taking her vows; Jennifer had a lot of braininess, and was very personable and beautiful; while Stephanie was a good person.

We return to the present day. Stephanie Barrington is having breakfast in her dining room of her large home. Her husband, Rick, a high echelon bank executive, has already gone to work; her son, Aaron, a student at Mount Marty was eating a late breakfast, since his first class wasn't until Eleven and her daughter, Allison, was already at school.

"Still hungry, honey?" Stephanie smiled at her first-born.

"Yep, Mom," he grinned, "always a growing boy."

Stephanie smiled as she watched her oldest. Aaron was the product of their first year of marriage. He had been an easy child to raise. He was athletic like his dad, and brainy like his mother and his godmother, Jennifer. When he was born, Jennifer had agreed that if something had happened to either one of them, she would help raise him. Aaron had taken to his younger sister well, after she was born four years later. However, unlike Aaron, Allison had been a handful from the beginning. She was moody, tending to throw tantrums, and whenever something good happened to Aaron, she made it clear that she would diminish it. Although he loved his sister, Aaron could be annoyed by her.

"Do you have to work tonight, Aaron?" Stephanie asked.

"Yeah, I do," he said, "someone called out sick at the station, so I agreed to go in for them."

Stephanie looked sad, "Why doesn't the radio station hire more people?" she asked.

"I wish I knew, Mom," Aaron said, hugging his mother, "the management spreads us too thin as it is. And then I also have to do my school work besides. Thank heavens, tonight is a baseball game night so I can work on my homework that way."

Stephanie smiled, "That is good," she said. She knew that Aaron liked it when the baseball game was played over the radio, so he could do his homework. Aaron worked part-time at WNAX, one of the most famous radio stations in the country.

"What does Allison have planned?" Aaron said.

"She didn't say," Stephanie said, "and that worries me. It worries Dad too."

Just then, Carolyn Weiss came into the room. Carolyn was Stephanie's mother, who had moved to Yankton from Vermillion a couple of years previously, following the death of her husband.

"We have breakfast here, Mother," Stephanie smiled.

Carolyn smiled, "Good morning, my dear," she said, kissing her daughter on the cheek, then she kissed her grandson on the cheek, "Good morning, my darling."

"Good morning, Grandmother," Aaron smiled, kissing her back, "how did you sleep?"

"Not so good," Carolyn admitted, "Allison had some people over last night."

"Oh, yes," Stephanie said, "I remember. Her friends, Paige and Laura were around."

Aaron winced. He didn't like Paige and Laura. Although he did kind of get along with Paige, he had no liking for Laura, who felt that she was entitled.

"Are you all right, honey?" Carolyn asked her grandson.

"I just never liked Laura Baines," Aaron admitted, "Paige McKenzie, I really don't mind, because she is slightly nicer, but Laura really rubs me the wrong way."

"How so, Aaron?" Stephanie asked.

"I don't know," Aaron said, "I just have a gut feeling that she and Laura up to no good."

"Well, don't worry," Carolyn assured her grandson. "she'll find out sooner or later."

Aaron's cell rang, it was his professor. "Hello, Aaron?" he said.

"Hello, Professor Stuart," he said. Professor Stuart was his history teacher, it was his only class that day.

"I didn't know how to contact you, but class is cancelled for the day," Professor Stuart said, "there is a problem with the computer system here at the college."

"OK, thanks," Aaron said, "I will have the homework ready to turn in tonight."

"Very good," Professor Stuart said, "see you on Monday."

Aaron ended the call. "Looks like I have no class today," he said, "the computer system is going crazy today."

"I wonder how that happened?" Carolyn asked.

"Me too," Aaron said, his gut feeling getting worse.

Meanwhile, outside of the computer center at the college, Allison Barrington and Laura Baines, were gloating about the stunt they pulled. Paige, on the other hand, wasn't pleased.

"This will really sink the college," Allison laughed, "they will be out of computers for the whole day!"

"I am still worried that the campus security would be on us," Paige whispered.

Laura scoffed, "Please, Paige," she said, "the campus security are so stupid. They won't know what we did!"

Paige nodded, "I guess you're right," she said, feeling the embarrassment that her two other friends should have been facing.

Allison nodded, "I know I am," she said, "this school is full of fools!"

"What do we do now?" Paige asked.

"Go back to school like nothing happened," Allison smiled wickedly, "I don't think we have anything to worry about!"

The girls went to Allison's car, and they drove off. Paige followed reluctantly.

Meanwhile, unbeknownst to the girls, they had been watched. Mary Jo Taylor, who was a friend of Allison's mother, Stephanie, and was a novitiate at Sacred Heart Monastery, saw the treacherous girls drive off. She was not sure what to make of it.

She took her cell phone, and called her friend.

"Hello?" Stephanie asked.

"Steph, this is Mary Jo," she said, "I was wondering. Is Allison at school?"

"Yes, she is," Stephanie said, "why do you ask?"

"I thought I saw her and her friends messing around at the college," she said.

"Why?" Stephanie asked.

"I don't know," Mary Jo said, "I saw what looked like Allison's car over by the Computer Center. I think they had a hand in knocking the campus offline. Paige looked ill, though."

"I had a feeling that Aaron was trying to tell me something," she told her friend, "and he's not usually far off on things like that."

"What are you going to do?" Mary Jo asked.

"I don't know," Stephanie said, "I think this is where I am going to call the school."

"You don't worry about it, Steph," Mary Jo said, "I'll call the school myself for you. I will find out for you."

"Thanks, Mary Jo," Stephanie said. "You can be sure of this, I will have a word with my daughter tonight."

"Anyone else you want me to call?" Mary Jo asked.

"No," Stephanie sighed, "I'll call Rick."

"All right, hon," Mary Jo said, "talk to you later."

Stephanie ended the call. She was not happy.

"You were right, Aaron," Stephanie said, "she was up to no good!"

"What happened?" Aaron asked.

"She and her friends had been behind the campus going offline," Stephanie said angrily.

"I knew it," Aaron seethed, "she's gone too far."

"Don't you worry about it, honey," Stephanie said, patting her son on the back, "your dad and I will deal with her."

"I'm going to the library, Mom," Aaron said, "I am going to finish my homework there. While you were on the phone someone called me from the station. They found someone else to work the shift I was supposed to, and I don't have to go in."

"That is wonderful," Carolyn said, "at least we two can go out for dinner."

Aaron smiled, "That is right, Grandmother," he said, "would you want to go to Minervas or JoDean's?"

Carolyn smiled, "JoDean's would be best. I haven't had that in a long time," she said.

"Then that is what we will do, Grandmother," Aaron smiled, "and I would be honored to escort my grandmother on the town."

Carolyn smiled, "Oh, you," she laughed, "I so love you, Aaron."

"You two have a good time," Stephanie laughed, "I love you both."

Aaron and Carolyn went out of the front door. Stephanie took out her phone and called Rick.

"What is it, Stephanie?" Rick asked, "You interrupted me in a board meeting."

"I wouldn't have done so normally," Stephanie said, "you know that. But we have a problem. Mary Jo called and she thought she had seen Allison at the college and she had been seen tampering with things at the computer center."

"What?" Rick asked.

"Aaron's classes were cancelled because of it," Stephanie said.

"Oh, I understand now," Rick said, "where is he?"

"He and my mother went to the library so he could study," Stephanie said, "and then they are going to dinner."

"Good enough," Rick said, "this way, we can talk to Allison alone."

"All right," Stephanie said, "I will see you tonight."

Then Stephanie called Allison. Her voice mail picked up, a cheery voice said, "This is Allison Barrington, leave a message."

"Allison," Stephanie said coldly, "you are to come right straight home from school. Your father and I want to have words with you."

Later on, Allison heard the message, and she froze. But she knew when her mother spoke that way, she knew she had best obey, but she didn't. She deleted the message and went off with Laura. Paige looked alone.
