During her last period class, Allison was starting to worry. Her mother had left her a caustic message telling her that she had to be at home right afterwards. And her mother was not happy with her. "What was that all about?" Laura asked her friend. "My mother left me a message to come straight home," Allison said, "I am not worried about it, I deleted it!" "Good, then let's go to Bonanza and eat," Laura smiled. "Yeah," Allison smiled, "where's Paige?" "Who cares," Laura smiled nastily, "Paige has her newspaper meeting, the nerd!" "You know, she may be a nerd," Allison cackled, "but my mother's friend, Jennifer, is also a nerd! And a better one than most." "Yeah," Laura said. Meanwhile, at the Barrington house, which was one of the oldest and historical buildings in Yankton, Aaron Barrington was finishing up his homework. He had promised his aunt Jen, his mother's friend, Jennifer Preusse, that he would get it to her before evening. Thankfully he had no classes that evening. Aaron had always held his Aunt Jennifer in high regard. When he was born, Jennifer was named as his godmother; she was his faculty adviser at the college, and more important, he could talk to her about anything, and he would learn well from her. With that in mind, Aaron walked the ten minute walk to Mount Marty College. He saw Jennifer sipping some coffee at the student center. She was sitting at the table that she, his mother, and their other two friends had sat at in their college days and still did from time to time. "Hi there, Aaron," Jennifer smiled. "I got my homework ready to turn in," Aaron said. "Anything wrong?" Jennifer asked. "Allison," he said. "I figured as much," Jennifer said wisely, "your mother called me and told me too." "Why is she that way?" Aaron asked. "I wish I knew that, Aaron," Jennifer said, "I really do." She took a cloth and cleaned her glasses, "I told your mother the same thing. If I knew how to fix her, I would be the smartest woman in the world." "Thanks, Aunt Jen," Aaron said, "here's my homework for Professor Stuart." "I'll see he gets it, Aaron," she smiled, "and don't worry. Your folks will know how to handle Allison." "All right," Aaron grinned, "come by for dinner sometime. Mom has been angling for you to come again." "I will do so," Jennifer said, "in fact, I WILL be coming tonight. Your mom invited me tonight. Kristin is coming too." "That is great," Aaron said, "how is she doing? I know she is still dealing with the issues she has." "She's fine," Jennifer said, "it took me a while to convince her to come to dinner tonight. She's still upset about the diminished capacity of her family name." "I know," Aaron said, "Mom told me she and Allison got into an argument about that one day at a function at the library. Allison made a total fool of herself due to it!" "My goodness," Jennifer said, "Kristin had made mention about it, I hadn't thought she had lost her temper, but she really did get mad." "Yeah," Aaron said, "I'd best get home before Mom sends out the national guard!" Jennifer laughed, "All right, Aaron," she said, "see you tonight." Aaron grinned and waved as he headed back to his house. Meanwhile, in one of the historical houses on the north side of town, Kristin Youngworth was sitting in her study. She was very upset, which was not unusual for the young woman. She had been seeing a psychiatrist for her depression for many years. Especially since the dark day in 1984 when her parents had told her that the college that had been a big part of her family's life was closing down. She had resented the diminishing of the Youngworth name ever since then. Her cell phone rang, it was Stephanie. "Hi, Stephanie," Kristin said, "I am coming over tonight." "Good," Stephanie said, "I will see you then. How are you doing?" "I feel so drained," Kristin said sadly, "I don't know how I can deal with it. Dr. Stoelpnagel tells me to take it one day at a time, but it seems I am on a treadmill." "I am sorry, honey," Stephanie said, "I also heard about what Allison had said to you. I am sorry that she did that to you." "It made it worse that she was bragging about her status," Kristin said, tears falling down her face, "she was making me look really foolish." "I'll talk to her, Kris," Stephanie said, "she will be punished for it, if need be." "Thanks, Steph," Kristin said, "I'm on my way over. Do you need any help with anything?" "Sure," Stephanie smiled, "I'll find something for you to do." Kristin smiled, "Thanks, Steph," she said. A few hours later, at the Barrington house, everyone was there. Jennifer was talking with Carolyn, Stephanie's mother; Kristin was helping Stephanie with the meal. Allison slipped in the back way while her mother and her friends were in the kitchen, and went to her room. Aaron saw her coming down the corridor and glared at his sister, "Where have you been?!" he demanded. "None of your business," she hissed. "I think Mom and Dad would be interested in where you were," Aaron snapped, "and I think I will tell them!" Allison glared at her brother, "You had better not say ANYTHING to them!" she spat in anger. "You do not dictate to me," Aaron said angrily, "you don't rule over this family!" "Shut up!" Allison snapped at her brother. Aaron stormed over to his room, "Get ready for dinner," he flung at her, "we've got guests!" "Who?" Allison snapped, "Not that I care." "Aunt Jen is here," Aaron said, "and so is Kristin!" Allison slammed the door. Aaron was ready. He went downstairs. Stephanie noticed her son's anger. "What's wrong, honey?" she asked. "Allison's home, Mom," Aaron said, "she slipped in the back way, while you and Aunt Kristin were working in the kitchen." "I see," Stephanie said, "and did she say where she was?" "No," Aaron said, "and when I tried to ask her, she shut me down." "I knew she would do that," Stephanie said, "don't you worry, Aaron. Your dad and I will handle it." Just then, Rick Barrington, Stephanie's husband, and Aaron and Allison's father, came in. Aaron grinned when he saw his dad. "Hey, Dad," Aaron smiled. Rick grinned, "How are you, son?" he said, "Your school went well?" Jennifer smiled impishly, "He did great today," she said. "Good to see you here, Jennifer," Rick smiled, giving her a kiss on the cheek. "Hi, Rick," Kristin said, giving him a smile. "How are you doing, Kris?" he asked. "It's been a tough day," Kristin said, "I would be lying if I said otherwise." "Well, a good meal with friends will help," Rick said sympathetically. "Yes, it will," she said. "Excuse me, Daddy," Allison said, with a menacing look in her eye, "I would like to talk to Kristin......alone!" "I don't think this is the time or the place......" Jennifer said sternly. "I don't think your opinion is needed here," Allison said with ill-concealed venom. "Mind your tongue, Allison," Carolyn snapped. "Shut up!" Allison said. "Let's talk in the study, Kristin, shall we?" Before Kristin could protest, Allison grabbed her arm and dragged her to the study. Everyone was stunned. Usually Allison would not behave so terribly in front of guests, but since she started high school, she became even more snobby. "Let's make this clear, Kristin DEAR," Allison said nastily to her mother's friend, "you are among people who are better than you are! And in this house, I am the one who calls the shots, all right?! Your family has lost prominence, all because Yankton College closed and is now nothing more than a PRISON!" Allison laughed mockingly. "You'd best watch your tongue, girl," Kristin said angrily, "I am not going to take this from you, you little brat!" "Shut up, you stupid bitch, you WILL take this from me, because I SAID you will take it," Allison spat in anger, "and remember, I am the one who calls the shots here!" With a snobbish flip of her shoulder length hair, Allison walked out of the study. Kristin tried to steady herself, but tears fell from her face. Jennifer came in. She knew how much hurt Kristin had, and she was angry that Allison was flinging such hatred towards her. "I am sorry, Kris," Jennifer said, hugging her. "I hate her," Kristin said, "I hate that girl! I feel bad for Stephanie. She is saddled with that brat for a daughter!" "Something tells me that Stephanie is starting to see her for what she is," Jennifer said, grabbing a Kleenex off the nearby desk. "Now, dry your eyes," Jennifer encouraged, "and we're going out there with our dignity. Allison has shown she has none." Kristin nodded. She took Jennifer's arm and walked out of the study. During dinner, everyone ate in silence. Jennifer glared at Allison for what she had done to Kristin; Aaron and Carolyn shot her some angry looks, as did her parents. Outwardly, Allison couldn't care less. "Excuse me all," Allison said, in a sweet voice which fooled nobody, "I have homework to do. Then I am off to bed, Good night everyone!" "Hold it, Allison," her father said coldly, "stay where you are." "Why?" Allison said in the same fake sweet voice. "You have some questions to answer," Aaron said acidly. "I don't have to listen to you, Aaron," she said coldly. "Well, you DO have to answer to me, young lady," Stephanie snapped, "first and foremost, I want you to apologize to Kristin! Jennifer told me what you said to her!" "Why should I have to apologize to her?!" Allison sniffed, "She is lesser than we are!" "You better apologize to her," Stephanie said angrily, "she's been a friend of mine for many years, and I am not going to tolerate my daughter making snide remarks to her!" "No," Allison said, "I am not going to apologize to her!" "Well, then, I will," Stephanie said, "forgive me Kris, it seems my daughter has completely forgotten her manners." "Allison," Rick said coldly, "get up to your room! Your mother and I will deal with you later!" "Whatever!" Allison snapped, and stormed out of the living room and to her bedroom. "She's got to learn a lesson," Carolyn said. "But how?" Aaron said, "She doesn't listen." "She will this time," Rick said to his son, "I have had my fill of her behavior. I've indulged her too far too much, and this time, I have had it." "What should be done?" Jennifer asked. "Grounding does no good for her," Stephanie said, "she scoffs at it; punishments mean NOTHING to her!" "I know," Rick said, "and talks mean nothing to her. I wonder what we did wrong?" Aaron stood up, "You two did everything right," he said loyally, "you did well with me. You tried with Allison, and she doesn't take it." "Thanks for the support, son," Rick said quietly, "I appreciate it, but you were a lot easier to raise. You were usually very good." "Your dad's right," Stephanie said, "you were easier to raise than Allison is." "So, what do I do?" Kristin asked. "You leave that to us, Kris," Stephanie said, "I think what we have planned will help teach Allison a lesson!" Kristin was intrigued. Edited by AlbieGray689, Apr 19 2015, 11:07 AM.
