Kristin glared at Allison. For the longest time, the wicked daughter of her friend Stephanie had been rubbing it in her face about her family's diminished prestige. The situations with her family were not her fault, but what made it hard was Allison being so uppity about her status in town, while Kristin's was fading.

Stephanie had her arm around her friend, while Allison sat on the other side of the table, with a smug smile on her face.

"You had better apologize to her," Carolyn said angrily.

"Why should I apologize to her?!" Allison sneered, "I won! It's as simple as that!"

Aaron shot his sister a nasty look. "How can you be so snobbish?!" he snapped at her, "That was VILE what you said to Kristin. You think that because we have more prestige than her, makes us better than she is?! The reason she has lost prestige is because of her family being gone, for the most part. Yes, what happened to the college that she was connected with had been bad; and also it was turned into a prison, but the main thing is, her family is gone, they are mostly dead! When a family dies, the prestige and influence diminishes! But that still does not give you the right to lord it over her!"

"Of course it does," Allison said angrily, "she's NOTHING! I am something!"

Aaron flung his napkin down, "May I be excused, Mom?" he said, "I cannot stand being in the same room with her."

"Sure, honey," Stephanie said, "it would be best for us to talk with her alone. Jen, can you and Kristin step out too, and you too, Mom?"

"Of course, honey," Carolyn said, "we'll leave you three alone."

"Wait," Kristin said, "you won't have to, Steph. Let me handle it."

"Are you sure," Rick asked.

"Trust me, Rick," Kristin said, "this young lady needs to be told what is what."

"All right, Kris," Stephanie said, "you know what you're doing."

"I do," she said. And she glared straight at Allison.

Aaron, Stephanie, Carolyn, Rick and Jennifer all left the dining room. Kristin again gave her a look of pure ice.

"You listen to me, you little stuck-up wannabe," she said angrily, "I have seen little puissants like you get eaten up and spit out with regularity for many years. The Youngworths, at one time, had more prestige than you would ever HOPE to have in your little finger. What name is on the football stadium where the high school football team play at?! It's YOUNGWORTH! Did it even BOTHER to say, Barrington?! No! The only reason you have the power that you do have is because your daddy is a bank executive. My family was powerful for many years, and although the loss of the college and their deaths has diminished our luster, then that is what happened. It is what it is! But I don't have to stand idly by and listen to you backtalk and badmouth me and my trials. Your mother is my friend, and I am not going to let you destroy my friendship with her! You get me?!"

"I told you that I am the one who calls the shots!" Allison said furiously.

"Oh no, you don't!" Kristin said angrily, "You'll not pull that on me! I may be a guest in your house, but you don't DARE to talk down to me like I was a servant. I am NOT your flunky and you will see what it is like!"

"The hell you will!" Allison said, "You will take my abuse, because I SAID you will! You have no choice! And nothing you say to me means ANYTHING!" She again gave a snobbish flip of her hair and walked out of the dining room.

Kristin sat down. She knew it wouldn't work, but she felt better at having told her off.

"Kris, are you all right?" Jennifer asked.

"I notched a moral win," Kristin sighed, "if that is anything."

"I knew she would not listen," Jennifer said.

"Well, she may still end up getting hers," Stephanie smiled, "I called someone who might well help us."

"Who?" Kristin asked.

"My friend and associate, Ellen Sawyer," Jennifer smiled, "Steph told her what was going on, and she said she would be glad to help us against Allison."

"Good," Kristin smiled, "she will not win!"

"And Aaron is in agreement with this," Stephanie said, "he sends his regards. He had to go to work tonight, but he said he will stop by after work and get you home. He's working evening show, from 7-9 and when he is off the air, he will be back to get you home."

"I'd get you home," Jennifer said, "but I have to go to a symposium at the college. I have to attend it this time."

"That's fine, Jennifer," Kristin smiled, "It will give me more time to hang out with Stephanie."

"Yeah, Kris," Stephanie grinned, putting her arm around her, "and we can hang out here, like we did when we were in school."

"Yep," Kristin said, feeling a lot better, "you have fun at the symposium."

"As much as I can," Jennifer laughed, "I talked with Mary Jo. She's coming over."

"She can come along too," Stephanie grinned.

"All right, see you," Jennifer grinned, and went to her car.

Just then, as Jennifer was coming out, a younger girl came up.

"Excuse me," the girl mumbled, "I am looking for the Barrington house."

"This is it," Jennifer said, "who are you looking for?"

"Stephanie Barrington," the young woman said.

"Wait a minute," Jennifer said, "you're one of Allison's friends, yes?"

"Yes, I am Paige McKenzie," Paige said, "I need to tell Mrs. Barrington what Allison has done."

"Hang on," Jennifer said, "I'll get her."

Stephanie came to the door when Jennifer came with her.

"Paige," she was surprised, "what brings you here?"

"I have to talk to you, Mrs. Barrington," Paige said, with tears in her eyes.

"What is wrong, dear?" Stephanie asked.

Immediately, Paige burst into tears.

"Paige, honey," Jennifer said, "I have to go, but Stephanie, Mrs. Barrington, will let me know what is going on, and you drop me a call too, if you need to."

"Thank you, Ms. Preusse," Paige said, taking the business card Jennifer had, "I will take you up on that."

As Jennifer left, Mary Jo came up. She was dressed in a conservative suit, and she looked very feminine, but very goal oriented. She didn't wear a habit, but she was glad to be in the monastery.

"Come on in, dear," Mary Jo said, putting her arm around her.

Allison was on top of the landing when she saw Paige coming into the house. Her heart sank! She had a feeling there would be trouble.
