Joan Ferguson was tired. She had taken a new job as a Functions manager at one of Melbourne's ritziest restaurants. It was one of the few jobs that would take her, given her criminal record. Many years ago, Joan was a prison guard at her former place of employment, Wentworth Detention Centre, and was one of the most hated guards there. Until she had been tricked by a prisoner and was caught, convicted and sentenced on embezzlement, for attempting to rob a loan company of almost a half million dollars. She had served her sentence and was now back in society. The Ritz, near Flinders Street Station in downtown Melbourne hired her, despite her criminal record, and knew she had managerial skills, given her two stints as acting governor of the prison. Immediately, Ian Watkins, one of the managers, hired Joan as a functions manager, which gave her oversight over a group of workers. Her time in prison softened her, somewhat, but she was still as stern as ever, especially with overbearing and annoying customers. Joan began work immediately, liking her job. Her second in command was a nice girl named Julie. She took a liking to Julie, and Julie learned about her time in prison and her work as a guard. Happily none of that mattered to Julie. Ian wasn't sure of Joan's record, but he recognized her take-charge attitude and he grew to like her as well. Her two other subordinates, Michael and Rachael heard about her from reputation, and although at first they didn't consider her friendly, they grew to like her as well. Joan liked her co-workers as well, it was such a pleasant change from her days at Wentworth, where she was detested by both prisoners and staff alike. Ian looked toward the door and winced. It was that snooty Fern Kelley. Fern was a snotty woman who had to have everything done her way, and if it wasn't, then it wasn't worth it at all. Joan winced along with Ian. "I don't know if you have dealt with her before, Joan," he said, "she is a royal pain, and she comes here and makes everyone's lives miserable." "No need to worry, Ian," Joan said, "there is nobody who can stand up to me." Ian nodded, and already Fern was crabbing, "Where is a waiter?!" she demanded. "A waiter will be with you shortly, madam," Joan said crisply. "And who are you?" Fern Kelley sniffed at her. "I am the new functions manager of the Ritz, Joan Ferguson," she said. "Oh," she said disdainfully, "Obviously they hired a criminal!" "What you know about me, and what you don't are two separate things, madam," Joan said harshly, "and permit me to remind you that my days as a prisoner are over!" Ian walked up to her, "Joan is absolutely right, Mrs. Kelley," he said defending his friend, "she has paid her debt to society and she deserves to be treated with respect." Julie, Michael and Rachael came up and stood with their new boss, "You know you can't always criticize everyone that you don't like!" Michael said. "Right," Julie said enthusiastically, "ever since Joan came to work here, I've looked forward to work again!" "Yeah," Rachael said, "I never thought that I would not miss my former supervisor, but Joan is always encouraging me to do better work!" Fern Kelley didn't care. "I want a cup of tea!" she said sniffingly. "A waiter will come shortly," Joan said. "Fine," Fern said, "I'll sit here for the day if possible." "Suit yourself," Julie said. Joan was touched with the support of her new friends. They really know how to make me feel like I am part of the family, she thought to herself, and they are a good group of people to work for. |
