Passions in:
THANKSGIVING AT THE WINTHROPS
by Albie Gray
based on the soap opera Passions by James E. Reilly.

A lot of things have happened for Ethan Winthrop and his wife, Theresa. In 2008, after almost nine years of lies, deceit and viciousness at the hands of Gwen and Rebecca Hotchkiss, they finally became husband and wife, for good this time.

They stayed in the town of Harmony and both were happy, with their children, Little Ethan and Jane; and Ethan's son by Gwen, Jonathan. Gwen and her equally scheming mother were both in jail for their blackmail; bribery; and accesory to the murder of Theresa's aunt Maria and her cousins.

During their arrest, Rebecca blabbed about Gwen's marriage during a trip to Las Vegas. That made Gwen's marriage to Ethan invalid; which infuriated Gwen.

It is now two years later, and things were still happy. It was Thanksgiving day, and Ethan and Theresa were preparing their home for the onslaught of relatives who were sure to come that day. The couple had moved into the house that Ethan had always lived in. To Theresa, it was home.

Theresa's mother, Pilar, who moved in with them after they were married, was making sure everything was ready.

"Grandma, the table looks wonderful," Little Ethan said to his grandmother. He looked handsome, much like his father, in his suit and tie. They were going to go to mass for Thanksgiving.

"I am glad you like it, mio," Pilar said, "you bring your appetite today, ok?"

Little Ethan grinned, "I will, Grandma," he said.

Pilar smiled at how much he looked like his father. "You look ready for mass," she said.

"I'm ready," Little Ethan said, "but I don't know if anyone else is."

Little Ethan's sister, Jane, came barreling out of her room. She was now about six, and was as tomboyish as her aunt Kay was when she was little.

"Hi!" she said to her brother. Little Ethan and Jane were close as siblings.

"Morning, sis," he said to his sister, "are you ready for mass?"

"Why do I have to wear a dress?" she wailed.

"We're all dressing up for mass," Little Ethan said, "I don't much like it either, but this is important to Mom and Grandma."

Jane then agreed. "OK," she said, "You know what is going on anyway. By the way, who's dressing Jonathan?" she asked.

"Mom is, I think," Little Ethan said.

Jonathan Winthrop was a little three year old now, and was not like most three year olds, though. He wasn't like most boys, and wasn't like any three year old. He was more quiet, and less prone to tantrums.

He would be in his room, quietly playing, or just watching his videos. Jane would be out playing little league baseball, or kicking a football around with Little Ethan.

Little Ethan, although he wasn't so little anymore, was now 13 and had a bit of an idea of what he wanted to do. He wanted to be a policeman. He sometimes would help out his grandpa, Sam Bennett, the chief of police. Also working on the force was his Uncle Luis, his Aunt Fancy; and his Aunt Paloma.

Some days he would be spending his summers and weekends reading up on police procedure. His favorite books were crime stories and books by Stuart Woods, one of his favorite authors.

The way the childrens' rooms were decorated was reflected in their interests. Little Ethan was into reading on criminal procedure, and his choice in books and TV reflected that. He was a huge fan of Law and Order, and would also watch shows like NCIS, and JAG.

Jane was very much into sports. She was a huge fan of the New England sports teams. Her favorite sport she played was little league baseball. She was also a soccer player. Her room was decorated in a sports motif. Jonathan's room was typical for a three year old's room.

Just then, the doorbell rang. Little Ethan, knowing his parents were busy, went down to answer the door.

"Grandpa!" he said, as he saw Sam enter. Little Ethan and Sam were close, due to their mutual love of police skills.

"Happy thanksgiving, champ," he said, giving his grandson a hug. His grandmother, Ivy Winthrop came in as well.

"Morning, sweetheart," she said, giving her oldest grandson a hug, "where is everyone?"

"Mom is getting Jonathan ready," Ethan said, "and Grandma is getting the table ready."

"Is Jane ready?" Ivy asked.

"I think so," Ethan said, "you want to check?"

"Sure, darling," Ivy said, and went upstairs to help get her granddaughter ready.

"I don't think it would be wise for me to go check on Jane," Little Ethan said, "because it's not for me to do."

"That is a good idea," Sam said, "but I DO know what we CAN do, let's go check on Jonathan."

A few minutes later, the entire family was on their way to the mass at St. Margaret Mary's church. Father Lonigan was still the parish priest and also attending mass was Tabitha Lenox, who had become a valued asset to the parish. Her daughter, Endora was now eight years old, and was shown to be a very powerful good witch. She didn't tend to use her powers often; but when she did, she would to protect those that she cared about. Endora and Jane Winthrop were close friends, despite the fact that the two girls were two years apart in age.

Two hours later, everyone was back at the Winthrop house for dinner. After mass, Jane was allowed to change back into her favorite pair of overalls and her favorite New England Patriots sweat shirt. Jane was a big Patriots fan, and the shirt had been a gift from Endora. She was more of a football fanatic than her brother was.

Ethan, his brother, Noah; and their father, Sam, were watching football in the den. Jane came in with them.

"Who's playing, Daddy?" she asked Ethan.

"Washington and Dallas, sweetie," he said to his little girl.

"Oh," she said. "I'm rooting for Washington."

Noah and Sam laughed, "Just like Kay was when she was her age." Sam laughed.

"Grampa," Jane moaned, "you're laughing at me!"

"I don't mean to, precious," he said, "it's funny because that was how your Aunt Kay was."

Jane felt better. "OK," she said agreeably. She settled down and rooted on Washington.

Little Ethan was reading some books on his own, when his grandmother, Ivy came in.

"Where is everyone?" she asked.

"Dad, Uncle Noah and Grampa are in the den, watching football," Little Ethan said, "Jane is with them. Uncle Luis and Uncle Antonio went to get some more drinks; and Mom and Grandma are in the kitchen with Aunt Sheridan; Aunt Paloma and Aunt Fancy."

"Don't forget about me," a voice called out. It was Fancy's best friend, Esme.

"Aunt Esme!" Little Ethan smiled.

"Hiya, Tiger," Esme smiled. "What are you reading?"

"Chiefs," Little Ethan said, "it's a very good book."

"I see that," Esme grinned, "Ivy, great to see you again."

"Happy thanksgiving, Esme," Ivy said.

"Thank you," Esme said, "could you point the way to the kitchen for me?"

Ivy did so. Esme went to the kitchen.

"You seem engrossed in your reading, honey," Ivy said.

"It's one of the best books I've read, Grandma," Little Ethan said, "The only one I can talk to about it, is Grandpa."

"Well, that is good," Ivy said, "is something bothering you, honey?"

Little Ethan looked at his grandmother, "It shows, doesn't it?" he said, putting his book down.

"You're like your dad that way," Ivy said, hugging Little Ethan, "your dad always felt weird talking about his problems to me."

"Sometimes, I feel so different," Little Ethan said, "I am interested in being a cop, like Grampa, but I don't know how I could do it. People would think I am being given favors since I am the chief's grandson."

"You're not, honey," Ivy said, "you're a lot more down to earth than a lot of people, Grampa would tell you the same thing."

"Your grandma's right," Sam said as he came out of the den, "you're a hard worker, my boy, and I am very proud of you."

"Thanks," Little Ethan felt better.

"Dinner," Fancy called, "everyone come to the dining room."

Sam put his arm around his grandson, "I'm hungry, son," he said, "are you?"

Little Ethan grinned, "I am indeed, Grampa," he said. Ivy smiled at her two favorite men.

"You two," Ivy smiled, kissing them both, "you're a pair!"

Sam, Little Ethan and Ivy led the way downstairs.

The dining room table was set wonderfully. Ethan sat at the head of the table; Theresa sat at the other end, with Jonathan in a booster seat. Ivy sat next to her son, Sam on her other side, Little Ethan on his other side. Sheridan and Antonio were next to one another; then Noah and Paloma; Luis and Fancy sat on the other side of the table, with Esme on Fancy's other side; Miguel and Kay Lopez-Fitzgerald were also there, sitting between Esme and Pilar. A seat was also there for Little Ethan's cousin, Maria.

Pilar sat at the opposite side of Ivy. She and Ivy talked over a lot of things after Ethan and Theresa's wedding and were as close as ever.

After a prayer, which Pilar spoke in spanish, and then Ethan spoke in English, dinner began. It was a lovely dinner.

The family was all together, and even though there had been a lot of issues, the bond that they had as a family made all the difference in the world.

After dinner, everyone relaxed during the rest of the day. Little Ethan went back to his reading. Jane went back in with her father, grandfather, and uncles to watch some more football; Jonathan was taking a nap.

Ivy watched her grandson reading like crazy. She looked at him, feeling a lot of love.

I promise you, Little Ethan, she thought, nobody will take this family apart. I swear it. We've fought too hard to let it be sundered now, and you will be all right.
