One of the bones in her hand was cracked. That was the official diagnosis the staff at the hospital in Austin. And it was not just a judgment call. The x-ray was clear as day. The past few hours had been all a balance of emotions, trying to think happy thoughts and doing anything that would calm her just to keep the anger boiling up inside her from erupting. Looking down at the steel frame wrapping around her hand and wrist, all she could feel was an immense amount of hate... for him, the one person she once believed she could never have any thing close to bitter feelings towards. But he had in fact done it. She could not remember the last time she felt such hate for someone, not since Luke over a year ago when she first made her return to HKW. And she lashed out, making Luke pay for what he put her through, the humiliation and torture and doubling it. Colton had to know how she would respond to what he did to her earlier in the night, trying to make sure she would not make it to their match for the Global Championship at Destiny.

Or he's just gotten to the point of being that damn arrogant.

But she would be there at Destiny. She would choke him with this cast if that is what it came down to being needed. The doctor was very confident she was going to have a very speedy recovery time and be well healed by the time she walked out into the Alamodome. That was little comfort to how she was feeling at the moment though. The fact that he even tried to stop her was infuriating enough, the pain of it when it actually happened only topped it off. This was her time to fight for Subversion's top prize! She earned it after winning the Rumble to Destiny!

Copy of the x-ray and assurances that the Global Championship match was indeed still going to happen as planned sent to Perello, she tried to focus on her other hand for her source of calm. She tried to block out the sound of medical tape and discomfort as her hand was being heavily bandaged and look down at the text coming through on her phone. Angelo was being himself, trying to calm her down since he knew how she must have been feeling even though he was clear back on the other side of the country. Seeing his name pop up when he started calling made her both smile and sigh deeply.

Stay calm. Don't yell. Not at him. It's not his fault.

Doing her best to keep that Irish temper that ran in her family in check, she picked up the phone and accepted the call. Even though it was him, she could not sound like her normal self for the life of her. All she could manage as she spoke was a very measured tone.

ASHLEY SULLIVAN: Hey...

His teeth clenched as he painfully makes his way back through the curtain, putting so much energy into telling the pain radiating through his body to fuck off that he hasn't paid attention to how his sweat-soaked hair has matted around his face and is blocking one of his eyes, let alone the sting coming from his split lip, because the only thing in Elijah Black's world at this very moment is proving he could walk out of the arena after having Lady Magdalena tear his knee apart - even though it would have been in his best interests to accept some help so he wouldn't have been placing all his weight onto it for the several dozen yards between the ring and the area he has just about managed to reach

Upon stepping through the curtain Black goes from trying to prove he can walk no matter how much punishment the joint had taken to what appears to be him falling over in slow motion, as he stumbles across the area until he slams back-first into the wall at the back of the area, sliding down the wall as he tears his knee pad away from the joint

ELIJAH BLACK: Goddamn motherfu...

As a look of blessed relief flickers into Black's eyes as he no longer has to endure the pain stabbing away in his knee, he's disturbed by a Hard Knox staffer who has spotted him sliding down the wall

STAFFER: Are you okay?

Finally brushing the matted hair away from his eyes, Black turns his head towards the staffer and fires a filthy look in his direction, clearly irate at the staffer for committing the crime of asking a stupid question

ELIJAH BLACK: Do I fucking look okay? Get me a goddamn ice pack.

Not even bothering to maintain eye contact a second longer, Black turns his head away and returns his focus on trying to remove his knee pad so it's possible to apply the ice pack he just demanded with the grace and courtesy of truck crashing through the wall of a slaughterhouse - all because of the immense pain that he has felt ever since the burst of adrenaline that saw him sacrifice the weakened limb for the one second needed to put Lady M away with Manufactured Consent which has long since seeped away and allowed his entire body to tell him he did a stupid, stupid thing ever since

Resting the back of his head against the wall, a chuckle finds itself growing deep within Black's chest, and before he can suppress it that same chuckle escapes through Black's lips, drawing some perplexed looks from the various staff members passing by - except for one, who is giving Black a very different kind of look as he hands Black the ice pack he asked for earlier before turning to leave without a single word or making eye contact, and as the soothing coolness of the ice pack finally meets with Black's tortured knee in that moment of clarity as the pain begins to evaporate and allow his mind to focus on something other than the pain, Black feels vindicated for his decision because he knows that Lady M would have never expected him to sacrifice his own body to claim victory - and knowing that he caught Lady M off guard has served its purpose not just for this one match, but put a few people on notice that they really should not be assuming he can be put down so easily

Subversion 21 had come and gone, for most it was another night. Wins, losses, and the emotions that come with it. However, it was anything but ordinary for Jackson Magnum. His segment was ruined, not by an act of violence, or some terrible action that left him embarrassed. No it was by something far more sinister. Words from a harsh messenger. The cruelty of which shook his to his very core. The reality of the remarks left him stinging, but at that moment as he lies on his back looking up at the ceiling, he realizes a harsh reality.

That some people no matter what course Jackson takes will never believe him, or believe in him. They’ll mock him, ridicule him, and do everything to bring up to past. Claim he’s a fraud, or a phony, sound the alarm every time he says anything that isn’t “good in their eyes”. Jackson is realizing now what he should have long ago. The standard for him is set to a point that no one and nothing could ever reach it.

If he’s nice and truthful with people, suddenly he’s a perpetuating a fraudulent image. If he’s harsh at times well he’s just “a piece of shit”. At this point he doesn’t have many options, within the world of professional wrestling. He’ll always be the outsider, why? Who knows, he never saw the sense in trying to hold people down, he always believed in lifting them up.

That however didn’t make the words Nina had said any easier to digest. His bit down on his lip, his hands trembling due to his unrest. It was clear to him that no matter what he said or did, some people would never believe in him. It is truly the worst feel he’s ever experienced in his life. Knowing that this will always be the case leaves an emptiness his chest, and a gut wrenching pain inside his stomach.

Maybe Nina is right, but it doesn’t change who he is or what he stands for. As the tears begin to roll down his face, the cameraman steps forward from the shadows, in an effort to get a close. Jackson just noticing the camera shakes his head in disappointment, knowing critics would either say “he’s a cunt” or “this was staged”. Either way, it was already done. Standing up, he walks towards the door, but before he can leave the cameraman shouts out.

Cameraman:
Jackson, how do you feel after what Nina said to you tonight?

Jackson turns around, an exasperated sigh releasing from the depths of his soul.

Jackson Magnum: All I know is I need to keep fighting fella. Anyting else, is just tawk.

With that comment Jackson turns, swinging the door open, he lowers his head and walks away without another word.

The camera fades in. We see a large, swanky looking glass-top table. On one side of the table sits Tiffany Jay, wearing professional black dress. On the other side is an African American man in a charcoal suit. The camera focuses in on Tiffany.

TIFFANY JAY: Good evening. I’m Tiffany Jay, Subversion correspondant. And tonight, I’m joined by a very special guest. He is a writer over at The Culture Online Magazine and website. He’s also been covering sports across the globe for the past seven years. Therefore, please welcome Daniel Kendricks.

Daniels flashes a small smile.

DANIEL KENDRICKS: Thank you for having me on this evening. It’s an honor.

Tiffany returns the smile.

TIFFANY JAY: Now, Daniel and I were just discussing something before the cameras started rolling. If it’s alright, I’d love to pick up where we left off.

He nods.

DANIEL KENDRICKS: Of course. I believe we were discussing the bout between Nina and Zero?

Tiffany responds with a nod of her own.

TIFFANY JAY: Yes sir, we were.

DANIEL KENDRICKS: Well, as I was saying before, I thought it was an interesting match-up for sure. Both have been in HKW for a decent amount of of time, but this is the first time that they’ve squared off. In fact, I want to say that this is their first ever match.

Tiffany quickly scans a piece of paper in front of her.

TIFFANY JAY: That’s absolutely correct. Now, of how do you feel about the outcome of the match? Scanning the crowd, I felt like a lot of the fans were a bit surprised.

DANIEL KENDRICKS: Well, before I get there, let me give some general impressions of it first. Overall, I thought it was a fine bout. Regardless of what anyone says, both competitors are world class. Now, all that being said, the result wasn’t extremely surprising.

He puts up a finger.

DANIEL KENDRICKS: And, that’s not taking anything away from Nina. I always enjoy watching her do work out there in the ring.

He lets out a small laugh.

DANIEL KENDRICKS: It’s funny. A few days ago, Defiance star Felicity Banks put out a tweet saying something to the effect that Nina is one of the hardest working in the Business, but still doesn’t get the credit she deserves. I tend to agree with that sentiment. I see her as a star; and when her career is said and done, she’ll likely be a legend. All that being said, Zero is nearing legend status right now, if he already hasn’t. Despite his attitude, which I know a lot of people take issue with, his accolades and skills speak for themselves. Also, he has the experience factor, right?

TIFFANY JAY: That’s true. I think we all kind of forget that Nina has only been doing this for about three years. A lot of the time, her talent and proficiency in the ring kind of masks that fact.

Daniel nods.

DANIEL KENDRICKS: I couldn’t have said it any better myself. She is still grinding, she still working hard, and she is still learning. But when you put her up against a person of Zero’s caliber, she naturally. going to be at a bit of a disadvantage

TIFFANY JAY: Let me ask you this question, do you think this loss is a setback for Nina?

Daniel rubs his chin.

DANIEL KENDRICKS: Hmm, no, I wouldn’t say so. Yes, she did lose the match; that’s clear. However, she had a wondering showing against Zero. I’m sure the powers that be were watching that match very closely; and if I were them, I’d be a bit impressed.

He laughs.

DANIEL KENDRICKS: You got to remember, Zero is a man out of this world. He won, what, like 247 Frontier Grapplings Arts awards last year?

The two laugh at the mild joke.

TIFFANY JAY: I think it was a little less than that, haha.

DANIEL KENDRICKS: Of course, of course. But at the end of the day, it was a good match. She’s going to be able to build off of it. And, as she mentioned later on in the show, loses such as this only fuel her. Next time the two face, I suspect the result will be different.

Tiffany looks down at her notes.

TIFFANY JAY: Let’s touch upon one last thing before we get out of here. Later in the night we saw Nina and Jackson go back and forth on the mic. I think it’s fair to say we saw a different side of both wrestlers out there.

DANIEL KENDRICKS: For me personally, I think what we saw out there were opposite sides of the coin. If you strip away all the glitz and glam, you’ll see that both wrestlers were open, honest, and passionate about what they were saying. As a fan and audience member, I suppose perception would dictate where your allegiance would fall.
