“So did seeing him in action change your mind any? About Boaz that is.” Alistair shook his head, he was sitting behind an antique wooden desk, from the cast and color of the wood it was mahogany, sturdy and built to endure. His thick leather coat was hung off the back of the chair and he had his feet up as he made notes on the tablet he held with a surprisingly delicate touch. Robin came in with two steaming mugs of hot cider, setting one down within his reach before she moved a stack of papers so she could rest her hip against the desk. She watched Alistair a moment, savoring her sip and letting out a sigh after she swallowed it. “He could turn,” she began, a thoughtful look on her face. “If what we’re observing is true? He’s got some of that potential in him whether he wants it or not.” He uploaded a couple of pictures from his phone before he turned the tablet in his hands to show her. They were stills of Boaz’ face directly after his match, and in Brett’s office. To the untrained eye he seemed incensed at his perceived injustices, pissed off at the least, but Robin’s eyes widened. “Oh. I see.” She took another sip as Alistair went back to the tablet, his voice pitched lower even though they’d checked this place thoroughly for any electronic listening devices already this week. “He’s firmly on the maybe list. It could shift to yes pretty fast though, if he keeps getting stressed out. These two though…” he paused, his eyes narrowing to a quick-clip he’d taken of the Janus sisters, the twins. “This bothers me a lot. So many little things that come together for them, and everyone thinks it’s just special effects. Those little lights, the two flames. They look, but they’re sure not seeing.” Robin held her breath a moment, then nodded. “I felt something. Something beyond what we’re seeking, too. Ever hear of… disappearing twin syndrome?” Alistair looked up, a brow lifting. “Do what now?” Robin’s eyes seemed to unfocus a little as she brought up a memory of what she’d read once. “Sometimes a woman can be carrying twins, and one day she goes in for a regular ultrasound and one is just...gone. They’re pretty sure that something was wrong and her body reabsorbed it. But what if that’s not what happened? What if the other twin sucked all the life out of it and poof! It’s like I was seeing that, except they’re both fully grown functioning adults. Athena? Glowing. Confident. Strident, even. Minerva? By the Hidden Name, it was almost heartbreaking.” There was a long, long pause. “If one of them is our Witch? It’s Athena. But I’m sensing that even if we cleanse RISE? Our true Adversary isn’t here… and it might take more than the arsenal we have to take that one down.” Alistair nodded as he finished his notes and then powered down the tablet. “Hey, what about that new… well, can’t say for sure until we see it in person I guess. Hold off on that. Come on, let’s go and relax, we’ve got our work cut out for us.” |
