3 - A Model Citizen August 13, 2014 I’m not a bad guy. Direct, brash, and at times can be rude with those characteristics but I’m not a bad guy. I’m a man with a driven mind, a gifted mind, if I focus on something I will not fail or falter in the goal because I won’t quit until I achieve it. If it’s considered worthwhile then consider it mine. I can be questionable. I am far from perfect but I do not crawl through earth on my stomach. I am not a snake or an otherwise unsavory person. I am not--and to define me as such--to display me publicly as a man without integrity. “She called me a liar.” I say to myself as I fume my way down the main streets of Knoxville, TN. After performing in such a way on twitter she questions my stature as a man and calls me a liar? Fellow KWI technician Mackenzie Roberts and I have been ‘friendly’ for quite some time now. I’ve enjoyed her company as she has been enjoying mine. Outside of my beginning journey as a professional wrestler I have caught the eye of a management group in Los Angeles. I guess I have a certain look that could be considered successful on billboards and magazines. I was told I was a handsome young guy growing up but I was such a recluse and quiet guy I never really made moves toward the opposite sex. Now, with my budding confidence and in ring success I feel like now I can have fun and entertain a pretty woman as I please. But apparently I’m wrong sending a text to an ex girlfriend because closure is something I have been needing ever since she told me ‘I love Bayani’. Maybe I’m just wrong looking for that kind of closure. A sorry. An explanation. Hell, anything. To Mackenzie, me contacting ex KWI technician Nina Stokes is me missing her. It’s me holding on to some kind of tie to her. It’s me LYING. When I had done NO such thing. I don’t lie--I don’t care about anything enough to ever do such a thing. There are no wrong repercussions for the truth. Either you grin and bear it or you cry in a corner. I’m getting into arguments with a woman I’m not in a relationship with over a woman that never really wanted a relationship with me to begin with or was just biding time with me or… “Ughhhh I don’t know.” I say to myself exasperatingly rubbing my hand against the bottom of my beard as I continue walking down the street. When I got into the wrestling business this wasn’t my idea of how I’d have to deal with women. Considering this is my first real time having relationships and regular moments with women maybe I’m catching up for my awkward ‘Egghead’ teenage years. Now, I’ve blossomed into this desirable young man--and I’m still very lost on the female gender. I’m direct and upfront and they are all…confused and feelings and… “Jesus Christ…” I exhale. I don’t have time for this. My focus cannot linger on matters that will not contribute to my careers. I am a budding name in KWI. I know my potential is strong and with the continuing work and diligence I can see myself getting much more attention. The skill will increase which in turn will bring a better performance which in turn will bring the contracts to my front door. That’s what I came to Knoxville for. My work in a matter of a month has already brought the CEO of YL management in Los Angeles to my front door. I should be celebrating, I just signed a modeling contract for the next year putting my foot in the door toward a career that could be just a successful as the one I’m working toward in the ring. Signing bonuses, immediate photo shoots, billboards, magazines, and much more potential than that. Instead, I’m walking down the streets of Knoxville getting sneered at by half the population because of what I said to them and Les Grisham as the last Aggregation. They can look all they want the truth hurts sometimes. Toothless, shiftless, the waste of the United States. Yes, they can sneer all they want because they look at me and know to try anything further will only make their day worse than it began. Waking up as them is a bad enough existence. Speaking of… I notice this fairly young man of a beggars nature. Hair unkempt, body dirt filled and dingy clothed, with a small baseball cap in wait hanging from his hand. He didn’t look feeble bodied or in pain. He looked down but the glassy look in his eyes and the brown paper bag next to him gave me all I needed to know about him. Most people ignored him completely walking past him. Some dropped a few coins his way. I quickly fished through my back pocket to my wallet and a small folded piece of paper, an old flyer of some kind of social event I wasn’t planning on going to anyway. The egghead in me always walked around with a pen on my person. I lean the paper against the nearest wall and write my current thoughts. Sir, The worse kind of man in society is the kind that willingly gives up and resigned to life living as the wind. This country was built on pulling yourself by your bootstraps to become something, not by handouts that you are currently asking for by headcap. Nothing worth having is awarded easy so if I can work to make it so must you. You look youthful, you are too young to allow circumstances to destroy you. We are wasting our resources on you, a man unwilling to help himself. I place $3 dollars from my wallet into the bottom of the paper and begin writing again. Now take this money and not pay attention to any of these words to better yourself. Go and gather your 211 or Bud Light since you don’t want anything better for your life. Sincerely, A Model Citizen I place the money wrapped by the note into the dusty cap and continue walking down the street. I guess my women problems are small in comparison. It could be much worse...I could be him. No one person is without fault... Question is do you try to better your faults or do you just not care? Knoxville Wrestling Institute’s Model Citizen. “Gifted” DeMarcus Gresham. That makes perfect sense I’d say. I won’t speak like I’m the male Lenora Price-Mason or anything like that. I’m pretty sure an impressive streak of that nature may not even be in my future. I think highly of myself but I am still level in reality which is why it keeps me a step above most. A model citizen is not a perfect being. They are faulted, they have their glitches but they are also strong enough to face those faults, admit them, and look to become better. I have been quite the model to follow. Impressive record, diligent and determined work ethic, straight from the hip you don’t need to question my thoughts of you because you will be told. I say what most of you are scared to or otherwise don’t agree with. My faults, hey I got a few...I drink more than I should. My attitude could be more open to others but most simply aren’t worth my time. Even still, I’m willing to help enlighten each and every one of you even though you are unworthy...I am a great man, a model man. Which is why I’m so happy to prove my worth in another new endeavor in my career. My first triple threat match. Bruce and Murdock must have somewhat heard my words when I addressed Les Grisham last Aggregation because the challenge definitely increased in number and that I appreciate. There are other problems within that point but I shall address them later. Right now, the match. My focus and approach has changed greatly. This is another opportunity to show KWI why these last two wins weren’t strokes of luck. Once again I show Bruce and Murdock the worst thing they ever did was have a man of my ability on a waiting list. Once again this is my chance to show the likes of Xaria Ford why what I say should be considered near natural law around here. I am not a liar so when I say I’m walking into this match with confidence and out with a win...these are not frivolous words. My tactics and focus with Dewey continue to be hard pressed. I’m going into this with my head on a swivel, more than one body to focus upon, staying aware, and my power will be used quickly. I will take advantage of every moment because they will be few and far in between. These are things I am mentally and physically prepared for. This will be a great opportunity for me because for once I am facing someone worth the deposit in my always growing wrestling career account. Zayn Williamson. Your will and skill make you admittedly worthwhile. For most of the failures sprawling backstage you sir are a highlight. It’s a good thing but please realize our size differences and all. Two weeks ago you proved size isn’t everything in your battle with Brody Watts but let me clarify with you before you make a terrible mistake… I am NOT Brody Watts. Brody is stupid...ignorant...with a lot of weight. The attack on you backstage and the inability to capitalize on it shows that. Not only was it unnecessary but it only seemed to get you going more. I’m not a brute who shifts his weight around. I am not a man of weight I am a man of strength. Calculated, collected, and controlled but kudos must be given to you because that win was impressive indeed. Other than that your only other claim to fame would be beating Logan Ford. ….Excuse my lack of enthusiasm for that one. You beat someone with the skill of a 7 year old boy. You need this win to raise your status Zayn, just as much as I do. Unfortunately for you my name may be ‘Gifted’ but I’m not into handing those kind of presents. Then of course there’s our newcomer, Dante Boyd. All I have on you are measurements and rumors. Big guy hopefully with more intelligence than our resident big boy Brody. A part of me understands you being the new guy on set. Wasn’t too long ago I was walking in doing the same. I would extend myself to you and say you want to follow a ‘model’ measure that has success so far. Come in, do your work, and remain hungry for it. You aren’t gifted but you sure can try to be. Truth is, you are more of a variable and unknown which makes it harder for me in preparation for you in comparison to Zayn who’s flaws I am aware of. A man of your size I’m doubting you will be using speed and flying all over like our other opponent in Zayn but...as a Gifted man I will prepare myself for anything where it comes to you. 285 isn’t hard for me to lift, isn’t hard for me to lift at all. Time to put another ‘wrestling family’ name to the mat. Consider yourself blessed by the creator Mr. Boyd. You’ll be the first person to claim he’s been welcomed into KWI by it’s Model Citizen. Quite an honor sir… Quite an honor indeed… 4 - Strength vs Weight "Ok you have it placed straight?" I look at the camera that my 'special' camera woman is holding. Making sure that its correct. She giggled my way before answering. "Yes Marcus, go ahead." I was beginning to really enjoy that smile. Getting used to seeing it a lot. Mackenzie Roberts is fun. Anytime we got together we just hung out, no expectations or further thinking. Just what I needed after...well after. “Ahem.” I clear my throat attempting to use the video camera lens as a reflective surface for my own personal looks. I will admit I was getting quite the big head about my appearance--a change from the normal ‘egghead’ usage. Since signing my contract to model with YL Management, I have seen my face in 3 magazines in small but defining ads campaigns. I was started to get stopped in public every now and then. The attention from the opposite sex increasing, which I certainly enjoyed. Such the drastic change from the Marcus I saw myself as in the mirror and although I still seen him in my reflection there was a few more stars hanging around the overall aura. Checking myself out a final time I wink toward Kenzie and she gives me a countdown. 3… 2… 1… “Welcome Knoxville Wrestling Institute to a Gifted experience. An experience unlike any other. A first look into the life of two upcoming competitors for the Season 2 Episode 3 edition of Afternoon Aggregation.” I spread my arms wide giving the grand intro. “Welcome to Strength vs Weight. A quick thank you to YL Management for the video editing and to my wonderful camerawoman, Kenzie.” I wink in the direction of the camera but of course everyone knows who its directed toward. “Take a quick shoutout to the camera Kenz.” Mackenzie’s familiar voice is heard. “Stop that.” A few of her giggles follow a humorous noise I never personally tire of. “Go ahead say hey.” I push forward a little more. I laugh enjoying her reaction. She moves the camera toward her as her attractive face fills the screen. “...ok Hi!” She rolls her eyes smiling the camera catching the movement. I nod and smile satisfied. “Ok, now I can continue. Today we highlight my upcoming opponent Brody Watts and I in a battle of two of the biggest men on the KWI roster. Thus the line, Strength vs. Weight. A statement I have used previously when explaining to Zayn Williamson why when it came to big men Brody and I represented two VERY different sides of the spectrum.” I pause for a moment more to catch my breath and enjoy my frame in front of the camera. It was becoming a skill of ease the more and more I did it. I always had the gift of gab and slowly the gift of presence was coming to fruition. “I, DeMarcus Gresham, will be playing the part of Strength whereas my new friend here, Mr. Levi Jacobson would be playing the part of Brody Watts as Weight. Say hello Mr. Jacobson.” I point Kenzie in the direction of the gentleman I paid a handsome amount to be my pawn for a few hours. Levi Jacobson is shown on screen smiling slightly. A scruffy unkempt heavy set white male who although did have Brody Watts similar shape didn’t look to much like him. He looks toward the camera intending to say something-- “-Thank you Levi.” I interrupt intently. He was paid to act...NOT to speak. “But without further ado, we present to you. Strength vs. Weight.” The current camera feed ends to fade into the edited video meant for the masses. DeMarcus VoiceOver (VO): Part 1 - Focus and Preparation The black background gives to a white graphic of Marcus’ spoken words. The view then switches to DeMarcus Gresham sitting down with his mentor ‘Mountain’ Dewey Dresden with a thick white pad and pen in hand. They both are watching the last Aggregation with intent to learn and get better. The scene shows many moments of pauses and rewinds for understanding and repeating examples. Gresham is shown looking Dresden’s way nodding in realization before writing down feverishly on the paper in front of him. The moment looks intense but at the same time profitable. Gresham’s voice overlays the moment of teacher and student. DeMarcus VO: A competitor. A real student of the profession. Strength sticks to the creed that has made him successful. Adding strength to his mental ability learning his weaknesses and strengthening them. A man truly serious about his craft will follow the example of strength. The scene fades into the bit actor Levi sitting on a beat up lay-Z-boy reclining chair with a television blaring off screen. From the sounds of it old school Tom and Jerry or Coyote and Roadrunner cartoons is playing. All is seen is his reaction to what is currently playing and in seconds his Cheeto stuffed face roars in laughter at the screen. Cheesy debris falling from his mouth all over his body and couch. An overall terrible display. Gresham’s voice once again lays over the scene. DeMarcus VO: Weight...sticks to well gaining weight. No studying. No preparation. Just...dead...weight. He sticks to his natural ability not realizing that without personal growth his ability will never expand which will leave his stagnant. Stagnant in KWI means being left behind in the trail of his own snack filled dust. A shame...A shame indeed. DeMarcus VO: Part 2 - Work Ethic and In Ring Ability The black background returns again this time with the match graphic for Marcus’ words. The scene switches to DeMarcus mid slam of Dewey Dresden with his newly patented signature move. His Black Diamond - Spinebuster. He forcefully bashed Dresden to the mat ending his perfected move looking down at his mentor with a determined face. The moment he hears Dresden hit the mat his expression changes of one of determination to search of approval. Dresden winces on the mat mustering a ‘thumbs up’ in DeMarcus’ way feeling the move but smirking humorously at the same time. DeMarcus nods in reply. DeMarcus VO: Strength works hard. Constantly. No days off. You continue to push forward to become the best you can be. That is the work ethic of strength. The work ethic of a man once again, serious about his craft and the heights he wishes to reach. The quick switch of the scene to the Brody Watts actor, Levi Jacobson, sitting in that same reclining chair looking at the same television with what sounds to be the same cartoon as before. The annoying boisterous ‘Cheetos’ filled laughter is this time followed by the work ethic of lifting. The lifting of a remote control only to raise the volume level which is followed by more hideous laughter. The sarcasm of DeMarcus’ voice is obvious. DeMarcus VO: This is ‘Weight’...lifting. Showing his exemplary work ethic that will lead him up to the top of the KWI roster. This is the supposed winners path. Very serious about that bag of cheetos so serious he may just choke on them. Any questions? ...Enough said… ”A real competitor must be able to take all the weight upon their shoulders and press forward. Come what may.” Just as Atlas held the celestial spheres with pride and strength I hold up KWI of the dead weight that runs among it. I hold KWI upon my shoulders the strength and model example as I watch all the previously ordained ‘golden boy’s’ or ‘chosen ones’ fall to the wayside. I stand tall holding the weight by keeping these shows on course, asking the appropriate questions, and making it all worthwhile for the dreamers in the back and the weaklings we perform in front of. Just as Atlas I keep the world of KWI spinning on its correct axis. This time around it’s a big guy and to indulge the cliche lovers, the bigger they are--the harder they fall. What makes this worse is I’m only assisting a man that has done the job falling on his own two feet. Brody Watts you have failed where I have succeeded. Our ties come to one man, Zayn Williamson. Sure, I didn’t pin him for three but I didn’t weaken him through a table backstage before said match and then LOSE either. Congrats Brody, you are the ‘Can’t Get Right’ of KWI. My legitimacy comes through Zayn Williamson. Your demise comes through the same name. You made such a terrible error in your actions that night. Not only in the sense of losing but what you ended up representing. A wrong. A wrong that I later had to make right in my triple threat match with Zayn and Dante Boyd. A wrong you are not alone in performing. You Brody Watts are giving the false hope that will is all you need. Sure it is a piece, an important part of the equation of success but it is nothing alone. I had to kill the weight that you added when you gave KWI fans and technicians that will equals success. You did that the moment you allowed Zayn Williamson to take your beating and win. Enduring unspeakable amount of pain and still end up on top. It is rare...possible...but rare. You Watts, made it look like something as easy as falling out of a boat into water. A wrong, plain and simple. Les Grisham did the same the moment he returned with this high expectation unachieved and undeserved. Maria Murder, I salute you. The amount of humor I found myself feeling last Aggregation, better than Christmas. She pressed off some of the weight for me before I even had the chance to take care of it myself. All of you...keep adding your pressure. The weight of failed endeavors and undeserved placement. I am Gifted...I’m more than able to handle it. So to you Brody I say good on you to realize who you are dealing with this time around. The crass dealings and verbal jousting you once imparted on your opponent Zayn hasn’t found its way to me. You were probably quite humbled by the loss and in that light I can almost find a positive for you. To be humbled means there’s hope for you yet. I was sitting back waiting for the first shot fired my way and never saw it. If it was ever fired it wasn’t directed here and was said more in a general tone and once again I applaud you for your discretion. Your looks may be deceiving and you make be smarter than you let on. I am a man on a mission, goals and echelons to reach, this is much more to me than placing opponents through a table and calling it even. I don’t half do my jobs. It’s done to the fullest extent or not at all. The only bet you have this Wednesday is if I don’t show up at all… I would advise you to get out of that chair, quit the cheetos, and get out of Knoxville. Otherwise I will embarrass you. ‘Can’t Get Right’ will become ‘Can’t Get Up’ in a matter of minutes. I’ll get him for you Kenzie… |
