NEST

Banahan, Cole slowly sips his cup of coffee. Observing. He was taking notes, a nod to Felix Vialpando, as Nest was off into a slumber, inside the cellar. Cole talks to his sedated weapon in what has become a morning ritual. After taking another sip of the coffee; Cole, seemingly frustrated, puts the mug down on the small roundtable. Running his fingers through his hair, Cole lets out a sigh followed by a short chuckle.

“Look, Nestley. This is not going to last forever. This cannot last forever.”

He sighs once again before getting up from his seat and kneeling down by the cell bars.

“You don’t need me in order to achieve success. It is not that I’m not privy to this fact. It’s just…man I’m doing this for your own good. All of this is just…experimentation. The commands are tests. I am not doing any of this to you out of harm.”

Cole looks at Nest, who is face-down on the cold cement floor.

“I am saving you from yourself. You have always underestimated your power. Speed. Rage. You have something in you that could be harnessed. Incubated. Cultivated into something nearly unstoppable. I monitor all of your matches. I’ve calculated the trajectories of your aerial assault. The impact of your strikes. The Tree Plant…heavens…I cannot even articulate the effectiveness of that manuever. You have defied the laws of physics that would normally apply to a man of your biological stature. The problem is, Nest…”

He gulps.

“Before we can tap into any of that potential, we need to tap into your brain. Something there is just not right. The drugs. This. It is all so we can see what the hell is going on inside of that head of yours, Nestley. We’re not trying to kill you we’re trying to help. I brought you in, telling you that I will help you find the light and the truth. You took that to mean, I was going to tell you the truth about your family. Well the truth is…"

Cole closes his eyes. He takes a deep breath.

“You are not who you thin—“

Cole hears the secret entrance opening and snaps up to attention. He rushes back to his chair at the coffee table and pulls out his phone, pretending to have been screwing around on it the whole time. Footsteps shuffle down the stairs and Cole anxiously looks over his shoulder to see who it is.

“Goddammit, Valentine! Did I not say text me when you were on your way back?”

Charlie Valentine struts over to the table in a long black trench coat. He was carrying a large manilla sealed envelope.

“Sorry boss. Totally forgot, I was just too excited to bring this baby back.”

Charlie slapped the envelope on the table, and Cole’s eyes widened.

“Could it be…”

“Oh, it be. Original issue and everything. Found it off some weird old man in the boondocks of the Carolina Coast. Totally whacked out. Gives Bourbon a run for his money. His granddaughter was a bit of a looker, though. Shave off about two hundred pounds and give me a glass of moonshine, she could be a six.”

Cole clearly stopped listening to Charlie at some point, as he tears through the sealing. He pulls out an old newspaper.

“September 23rd 1954. Well that would be the correct date, let’s see here…”

He flips through as Valentine takes a seat. Cole starts to smile.

“Heh…heheheh…heh…heh…here it is. Well I’ll be a monkey’s uncle, Valentine. You finally did something right.”

Charlie rolls his eyes as Cole reads out the title to the article he was looking for.

‘“BELOVED SIMMONS FAMILY SLAIN, SON ARRESTED’….blah blah blah…’Surviving member, Nestley Simmons was arrested on Tuesday afternoon after he was discovered at the grizzly scene with the murder weapon: a pickax.’ Jesus.”

Charlie sips Cole’s coffee, shaking his head.

“So that settles it. Let’s take this guy to the cuckoo’s nest…”

He does a ‘ba-dum-tss’ tap on the table.

“Why are you drinking my coffee? Whatever, it was getting cold. But no, this does not ‘settle it.’ We still have more tests to run. We need to find out how deep into this he’s into.”

Cole stands up from the table.

“C’mon, let’s go.”

“Get breakfast?”

Charlie says with a kid’s smile.

“No. We have things to do, and people to see.”
