*Early in the week

Rest—it’s what her body screamed out for. Normally, she’d ignore that call. “Keep moving.” That’s what her drive always told her. “Keep pushing.” That’s what her ambitions shouted…

But on this occasion, her body (and a doctor’s orders) trumped everything.

Nina LeCavalier had been beat up and banged up before. Lumps and bruises were a common occurrence. Her jaw had been nearly dislocated by her wife once before in GPW. She’d been battered and cut open. Minor ailments, all in all. It was all apart of the job, all apart of the sport.

None of that made this ass whipping she took any less painful.

She wasn’t a stranger to DeMarcus, not one bit. The two had met and befriended each other way back in their KWI days. Even back then, training was always on her mind, which made her and DeMarcus kindred spirits, so to speak. He was a no-nonsense type of dude; she respected that about him.

DeMarcus’ power and strength was on a another level, even back then. Therefore, she knew their bout at Subversion Twenty-Three wouldn’t be a cake walk. And honestly, considering the Lionheart Champion reign she had, what match in HKW would be a cake walk?

None.

While she’d had her shit rocked, Nina was strangely at peace. Most wrestlers have a short (or long) list would people that they wanted to face. He probably didn’t know it, but DeMarcus had been on that list for a very long time. Accomplishing that goal of fighting him almost made up for the pain he’d caused her.

Almost…

As she lay there recovering and resting on the family couch, distinct pitter-patter paw-steps could be heard. The paw-steps were rapid. The dog was running. Dora, Nina and Ryan’s oldest dog, was the master of chill; she didn’t run unless she was in a the park or out in the yard. That only left their puppy, Jager.

Moments later, Nina watched him run full speed through the doorway. He lept into the air and landed on the couch near her feet. He scurried his way up the couch until he found comfort on her chest.

“So silly,” Nina said. Admittedly, his antics brought a smile to her face. She gently scratched behind his ear. “Hey guy. You come to spend some time with mama? Hmm?”

After a bit, Jager scooted up and licked Nina’s face. He then let out a small whimper and gently placed a paw on her head.

“So perceptive,” she said with a laugh. “I’m okay though. DeMarcus almost walloped me with that forearm, no doubt about that.” She rubbed the back of her neck lightly. “I was dizzy after the match and all that. And I’m still a bit sore. But, I’m good.”

At least she thought she was good. Dr. Banner said she’d be fine, provided she take it easy for a couple of days. Nina’s inner warrior wanted to ignore the instructions and get back in the gym the next morning; but fortunately, her logic kicked in. Plus, her wife would have put a stop to all that foolish shit.

Hence, couch rest.

Jager nuzzled back in and settled down as Nina rubbed his back. “No need to worry Jager. Mama will be just fine. If this Lionheart Championship has taught me anything, it’s how to bounce back. XPJ beat my ass in the back, Alexander beat my ass in tag action, and Magnum already beaten my ass and had a win over me. But hey, I bounced back. I endured the pain. That’s what a champion does, right?”

Jager let out a tiny bark as he closed his eyes. Nina’s eyes followed suit.

“Besides, we all know the clapback is always something fierce, haha.”

. . .

*Sunday

“Ms. LeCavalier, are you alright?” a man asked in Japanese.

Nina heard his words. His speech floated through the air. Unfortunately, she caught very little of it. Those syllables rushed past her like a gust of wind.

It was never her intention to forget or ignore the man. Never that. However, the moment she stepped through those wide doors and entered the Tokyo Dome, she drifted into a trance like state of wonder.

The Tokyo Dome—she was familiar with the arena. She’d seen it on TV and DVD, like most wrestling conusures. However, as to be expected, there was a vast difference between viewing the arena on TV and seeing it up close and in person.

The place was…

Well, it was magical.

Remnants of all the grand events held there began to flood her brain. She began to think of all the wrestlers who hand cemented their legacy in that every building—in a day or so, she’d be able to add her name to the list…

“Ms. LeCavalier?”

This time, his words hit their mark. Nina shook herself out of her trance and turned around. “Oh, sorry about that,” Nina responded in Japanese. “I just got a bit caught up is all.”

The man smiled. “Aww, I see. It is understandable, Ms. LeCavalier. I’ve been told that entering the Tokyo Dome for the first time can be quite an enlightening experience for a professional wrestler,” he said with a nodd.

“That’s for sure,” Nina replied. “Hey, I know this a lot to ask. But, do you think I could just have a moment or two to myself? I’d love to just walk down to the ring.”

“Certainly ma’am.” He pointed down the hall. “If you walk down that way and then take a left, you’ll be at the curtains.”

“Thank you.”

“Of course. And please, take all the time you need. I’ll be waiting here for you when you return.”

Nina smiled and gave a slight bow before she turned on her heels and walked down the hallway. As instructed, she hit that left and eventually found herself in front of those curtains.

“Well, here it goes,” she said as she took in a breath.

Nina parted the curtains and stepped through. She peered out into the empty arena in awe as stood on the base of the entrance.

It was massive...

“Wow,” she said as her attention turned towards the giant entrance ramp that lay before her. She let out a small sigh and began to press on. Her eyes shut themselves as she descended towards the ring. The imagined the crowd clapping and cheering its head off with each and every step that she took.

After a considerable amount of time, Nina opened her eyes and found herself standing in front of the erected wrestling ring. She strolled over and took a seat on the entrance ramp. Pressing her back against the ropes, she lifted her head and gazed up at the ceiling.

“It’s crazy, you know? When I was younger, me and Devin would sit in front of that television and dream about wrestling. That’s all we wanted to do.” She let out another sigh. “Sometimes, it seemed like it was never going to happen. Sometimes, it seemed like a pipe dream...

“But, I made it, didn’t I?”

She paused for a moment.

“All I ever wanted to do was wrestle. Even still, never in my wildest dreams did I ever think I’d make it here.” She folded her arms in front of her chest as she leaned back a bit more. “The greatest wrestlers in the world have performed here, and I’m about to do the same.” A small smile creep onto her face. “I know that I’m talented. And, I identify myself as one of the best wrestlers out there doing it. It makes me sound arrogant at times. However, getting the chance to wrestle here—it proves it.”

A tiny grunt escaped from her lips.

“But, I’m not just here to be here. I’m not just here to have a match—I’m here to win.” She nodded. “No fear. No inhibitions.”

She hopped off the ring apron and turned to leave. Once again, her eyes gravitated to the ramp.

“That’s going to be one hell of a walk.”
