Scene One The scene opened up with Celeste Chastain sitting on her throne with her eyes closed. It was her early morning meditation time. Her peace of mind was broken up and disturbed when Jasper Nass came bolting through the door with a massive stack of military reports. However, before he could deliver them, sounds of heavy footsteps could be heard approaching the throne room. As she looked up, Celeste saw Vance Howe making his way to her throne. Such action would have normally been punishable, however, the usually stoic man fuming and furious. Instead she chose to allow him to speak. Vance held up a blood-stained and cut piece of Exo Chain-Mail fabric, similar to his own. Jasper interjects and reports that the three platoons that Eris Howe had been leading have been completely obliterated. Vance let out a large grunt—the cut fabric indicated that his sister had been killed in battle. Celeste let him know that Eris was one of the best soldiers that she’d ever seen. She apologized, but told him that he needed to stow his anger, for period of time. The empress urges him to calm down until the morning. By that time, her war council will have devised a plan of attack, allowing Vance to personally take revenge. “Blind rage will get you killed,” she said. Vance agreed and let her know that he’d be leaving out tomorrow at noon. He then exited the throne room. Celeste dismissed Jasper, closed her eyes, and lamented over her fallen soldier and friend. ![]() Scene Two A small child walked along an unpaved road carrying two large baskets under her arms. She hummed a little diddy as she made her way towards Tiao (her home village) with food and provisions. As she walked, the strap of her right sandal came undone. She rested the items on the ground as she adjusted her footwear. Two brolic looking dudes in grungy clothing appeared before her as she looked back up. “What you got there, lil’ girl?” asked one of them. Instinctively, she moved the baskets behind her. One of the men pulled out a knife and told her that they’d be taking all the provisions for themselves. “No!” exclaimed the young girl. She was quickly kicked in the chest to get her to shut up. “Let’s just kill her,” said the man on the left. “I betcha’ no one will even mis—” His body hit the ground before he could utter another word. The other man saw a shadow out of the corner of his eye. He followed to shadow—it belonged to a woman with a large broken broadsword. She gazed upon him with icy daggers. “You bitc—” He too was cut down before he could speak another word. Scene Three “You should have seen it mommy,” the girl excited said as she hugged her mother. She explained the whole ordeal about how she’s been attacked on the way home, and how a kind-hearted woman saved her. The girl’s mother and father asked where the woman was; the girl pointed just outside the door. As the parents exited the house, they found Essence Vasile seated on an old stump, eating beef jerky and cleaning her sword. The girl’s parents eagerly thank Essence for saving their child. They then insist that Essence spend the evening with them and have dinner. She knows that she should keep moving, but she doesn’t have it in her heart to tell them no. “Yay!” the girl shouted. After a full meal, Essence laid down for the night. She didn’t feel particularly tired, however, her body quickly drifted off into sleep. As it did, she dreamed about her own parents. In her visions, she trained extensively in swordplay with Luca Vasile. Luca constantly remarked on how quickly Essence picked up what he’d taught her. He told her that with more practice, he was certain that she’d surpass him with a sword. After their training, Luca went off to cook as Essence spent time with Summer Vasile. Essence’s mother spoke to her about the importance of strategy and tactics when approaching a battle. “Skill with a sword will get you very far. But relying on sheer skill alone is the way of a fool.” Summer explained that each opponent in battle has differing strengths and weaknesses. As a warrior in battle, one must picked up on these strengths and weaknesses, and devise a plan to exploit them—it is the most efficient way to walk away victorious and with one’s body intact. ...In the blink of an eye, Essence woke up out of her sleep. She sat up and looked around; she was still at the young girl’s house. Essence let out a small sigh and she shook her head and laid back down. The lessons from the vision weighed on her brain and wedged themselves into her mind. Scene Four In her heart of hearts, Essence intended to press on to the next village. However, before she could depart, she saw that various people in the village were in need. Therefore, she stayed for about a week or so, helping out with various tasks. Essence lifted items and carried things for a few days. However, she was then approached by the village elders. They informed her about a group of poachers who often plagued the community; said group lived out on the edge of the village. Recently, the group had beat up and assaulted an elderly woman for her family’s precious possessions. Essence grabbed her sword and told the elders that she’d deal with the issue. After surveying the camp on the outskirts of the village, Essence determined that there was a main structure, three living huts, a couple of storage huts, and about eight people in the group. “It would be a problem at all,” she said to herself as she hid off in the tall grass. Three ruffians exited the camps building and hung outside to smoke. They group chatted loudly for a while; they spoke about their latest raid ad plunder, and about women, of course. All the while, they didn’t hear or see Essence flanking them from their left-hand side. Before they could react, Essence slayed them without hesitation. She watched say their blood stained the ground’s dirt. She quickly wiped her blade and they went into the camp. A few minutes later, she’d slayen the others as well. There was a small hut on the side of the camp. After looking inside, she discovered a large crate, which held almost all of the village’s pillaged items and goods. She drug the crate outside of the camp arena. She then went throughout the compound, litting the structures and the huts one fire. She then drug the crate back to the village. All the while, she didn’t know that someone was watching her. Scene Five A seedy looking man with stringy gray hair and tattered clothing emerged from the shadows. He stretched his chin fervorous, as if he were under the influence of some substance. Vance Howe stood before him and observed him for a bit. A part of him almost felt sorry for the poor man; the other part felt no remorse at all. Vance told the man to straighten up and speak. The man told Vance they’d he’d seen the wanted posters for the “traveling warrior with a large sword.” He states that he observed such a woman just a couple of hours ago, clearing out a camp heathens... A couple of days later, Essence let the village elders know that she had to leave out and head to next village in need. They were saddened, but they understood. They gave her a stockpile of provisions to aid her on her journey. She thanked with earnest. A few hours later, Essence was all packed up and ready to leave. She marched out of the village and walked down the dirt trail that led to the next village. However, after about thirty minutes or so, Essence stopped in her tracks. She couldn’t but her finger on it, but she felt a strong presence in air. A moment or two later, she looked up and saw a bulking figure in front of her. Essence dropped her rucksack and placed it on the ground. “Are you the traveling warrior?” the figured asked in a booming voice. She didn’t answer his question. “Are you the traveling warrior?” he asked again in a more threatening voice. He then shouts the name of his sister—Eris Howe. He lets her know that he’s aware of her death, and that he is going to have her head. Before she could respond, one of Vance’s soldiers attacked Essence for behind. She quickly dodges and struck him down. As she spun around, she saw she was surrounded on all sides by a sea of seemingly endless soldiers. They all converged on her, but she kept them at bay by quickly spinning in a circle and slicing at their necks. After a bit of struggle, she emerged from the sea of dead bodies and glared at Vance—his gaze was stern and his body was unmoving. Essence charged him at the speed of light and launched an attack. She laid in a barrage of strikes and slashes with her sword—no of them left even so much as a mark on his armor. Vance punched her in the gut and sent her soaring into an oak tree. He cracked his knuckles as she approached her. Upon reaching Essence he began to batter her with punches and kicks; he then grabbed her by the neck and deadlifted her. Vance’s goal was to strangle the life out of her...and he would have succeed if not for a headbutt to the face from Essence. As she laid on the floor, Summer’s words and lesson ran through her brain—she needed a plan. That plan was clear, talk about Eris. Throughout the fight, she made quips about Eris, how she was a coward, how she was a poor excuse for a soldier, how she was weak. Those insults greatly got under Vance’s skin. He began to fight recklessly, and Essence took advantage—even causing him to collide into the tree himself. As he turned around, he was met with a knife to the neck. The stab would have killed most, but it didn’t kill Vance because of his muscles. He quickly removed the knife. The stabbing gave Essence time to scramble and retrieve her sword; as she did, Vance finally drew his. David and Goliath were suspended in time until Vance blazed in at lightening speed. He attacked with an overhead slash. Essence blocked it (mostly) but the slash grazed her chest; she looked down and saw a bloody slash. He continued his assault, and even though Essence blocked the blows, his strength prevailed and still allowed him to cut her. After his attack, Essence found herself with her back against that tree. She was tired, cut out, and bloody. Her body and mind wanted to give up; it didn’t seem like victory was in the plans for her. However, she was once again remind of strategy and tactics. Once more, Essence began to talk smack about Eris. Vance’s blood boiled even hotter with each insult. After a minute, he’d had enough; it was time to end things. He charged her one last time; Essence braced herself against the tree trunk. As he drew near, she dropped her sword. Vance launched a horizontal slash with get force. At the last moment, Essence rolled out of the way, causing Vance’s sword to become lodged in the tree. He tugged at it with great force and fury, but it didn’t move. Essence sprung to her feet and leapt onto the sword to use it as a springboard. She drove the point of her knee into Vance’s face. She comes down and springs off the sword once more. As she sprang upward, she twisted and reached for the handle of the lodged sword. Soft hands and finesse called the sword to become free. Essence twisted once more and drove the point of Vance’s sword directly into his own face. The sword impaled him. His body lingered on its feet for a moment before it slumped to the ground. Essence hit the ground as well. She rested on the ground for her moment. However, her body’s adrenaline began to wear off. Almost in an instant, her body began to scream out in pain. She laid there for a few minutes, but she knew she had to press on. She crawled to own her sword and used it to get to her feet. Using that sword as cane, she grabbed her rucksack. Scene Six Unbeknownst to Essence, she’d blacked out upon reaching the next major trading port, Canal Village. The local shaman found her collapsed alongside pile of cut wood and hay on the near the town’s bazaar. Feeling remorse for the woman, the shaman transported her to her hut and treated her body with healing herbs. Essence slept for four day; on that fourth day, she awoke to the shaman by her side. Immediately, she began to take inventory of her injuries. Many of the cuts and slashes her tender to the touch, however, they were healing quite nicely. And her body as a whole was sore. The shaman let her know that she was in Canal. Essence attempted to get up, telling the shaman that she needed to get moving. “Not in your state, child. Conserve your energy and strength. You shall rest here until the time is right.” When asked what she meant, the shaman stated that she’d had a vision of a major event happening soon. Scene Seven Three days later, a cloaked woman with black markings on her skin emerged from the nearby woods with two guards and walked into the village. No one knew who she was exactly, but they knew was a member of EXILE. She and the guards spoke to no one as they made their way to the center of the village, where they elders stayed. Outside the elder's hut was a short, balding man. He handed the woman a large tan rucksack as she approached. “Last collection day, we were a bit short. I thank highness Celeste for not punishing us. You’ll find the full amount of money is in there, plus back pay from last time.” His words were met with an expressionless stare as she passed the bag to the guards. Afterwards, they turned on their heels and exited the village. Well, at least the guards did... At the edge of town, the woman quickly changed her cloak and slipped into some standard traveling clothes. She also tired her long, flowing hair into a bun. The markings on her body also faded away. She then trekked back into the village and browsed around the bazaar. She didn’t enter the shopping area to buy bread or fish—that was a facade, a part of blending in. She came seeking information. She kept her ears open as she walked from booth to booth. Most of the villagers’ talk was irrelevant. However, she did overhear a small group speaking about the “battered warrior” that was at the shaman's hut. The woman left the bazaar and wandered into a secluded arena of the town. She pulled out and electronic device, which contacted Celeste directly. “Aye, Eulália Ibsen. It must be an emergency if you’re calling me. Is everything alright?” Celeste thought there might have been another payment issue; however, Eulália informed her about the rumor that she’d heard. “Interesting, interesting indeed,” Celeste stated. “You’ve been out in the field for awhile; I must fill you in. Eris Howe was killed in battle by that wandering warrior with broadsword. Vance took three platoons and went to avenge his sister’s death; nonetheless, he and every last soldier were wiped out as well. Knowing Vance, he probably put a hurting on her before he died. The Canal Village is the closest to Tiao, which is where Vance last contacted me from.” Eulália asked what she was supposed to do. “Engage her, Eulália. Strike her down, chop off her head, and bring it to my lap. She’s caused far too much trouble and spilled too much blood.” Eulália told Celeste that she’d advance in an hour. Scene Eight Essence was just waking up from another nap. She quickly rubbed her eyes and began to sit up a bit—until two hands began to wrap themselves around her neck. She looked up and into the eyes of her attacker; her iris’ were silver, just like her long hair. Essence struggled and fought back. A few moments later, Essence went flying through the air and crashed completely through the side of the hut. A group of villagers watch as Eulália climbed out from the hole. She held out her marked up right arm and hand―seconds later, a wicked looking double-bladed scythe materializes. “You shall not die a warrior’s death. But you shall die.” Eulália rushed her and slashed, but Essence rolled out of the way just in the nick of time. Her movement was slower than lower. As she stood to her feet, parts of her body began to ache and throb. However, she couldn’t think about those injuries; she needed to move and react. Eulália proceeded to launch a barrage of attacks, all of which were just barely dodged by Essence. In the meantime, the shaman had ran into the house. With great force and effort, she was able to lift the giant broken broadsword over her head. “Essence!” She heaved the sword towards the young woman, who caught it in one swift moment. Essence was able to raise the sword just in time to block a quick attack from Eulália. With her weapon in tow, Essence began to attack herself, however, her injuries caused her strikes to be a lot slower. The two fighters went back and forth for awhile. After a well-timed parry, Essence was able to slip past Eulália’s defenses. She slashed and chopped off Eulália’s free left arm; the onlooking villagers cheered. Essence then back rolled and put some distance between the two. However, Essence didn’t achieve victory. She and the rest of the villagers watched horror as that arms oh so slowly began to grow back. After a bit of time, the new arm was ready to go. Eulália smirked as she gripped onto her scythe with both hands. Thinking on her feet, Essence rushed in. She feigned a horizontal strike, and when Eulália went to block Essence struck low. She chopped off Eulália’s left quad, which caused her to drop to the ground for a bit. Nevertheless, after a few seconds, a new leg began sprout and grow. “Your method is foolish,” Eulália replied. Essence’s brain raced as she tried to come up with an appropriate course of action. “Shit!” she thought to herself. “Her body regenerates at a rapid rate. I could slice and dice her, and she’d simply heal herself. Shit, shit, shit! She’s got to have a weakness.” She took a second to study Eulália’s body. The markings from the neck down her thick and hefty. However, the markings from the neck up were thin and sporadic. “Maybe if I cut off her head.” She didn’t have much time to think as Eulália went back on the offensive with rapid strikes. Essence did her best to block them, however, after a while her injured body couldn’t keep up the pace. Eulália’s scythe delivered a few more cuts to her arms and chest. Essence dropped to knee. It looked as if Eulália was going to strike her down, until she received a spear to the left leg...and then the right leg. Essence quickly turned her head to see a gaggle of village soldiers poised behind her. The village elder who had paid Eulália to taxes also stood nearby. “Fear not, wise warrior. We shall not let you fall!” The rest of the soldiers rushed in and impaled Eulália body with spears until she was cemented to the ground. Bleeding and exhausted, Essence picked herself up. She limped over to Eulália’s body. After staring after at her for a bit, she lifted her sword and dropped it across Eulália’s neck. The head rolled a few meters away. Essence dislodged one of the spears and walked over to the head—she quickly drove it through the brain. The village began to cheer as the elders and the other fighters rushed over to support and uplift Essence. Scene Nine Late that evening, Celeste sat in her throne room. A particular feeling had washed over her. Although a bit of a wildcard, Eulália was diligent and punctual. However, she hadn’t contacted Celeste about the conquest yet. There was small knock on the door. “Come on.” Jasper slinked in with an anxious look on his face. “What news do you have, Jasper?” He nervously let her know that its been reported that Eulália has fallen. Celeste let out a large sigh. “Call a meeting of the EXILE council in the morning. It’s time to go to war.” Fin. Edited by Nina Stokes, May 11 2017, 08:18 AM.
