The last time that Alex ventured through a hospital, it was for nefarious purposes. He belittled a former enemy, and manipulated a whole drove of employees. Now, it was due to a sporadic phone call from a shaky caller. They said that his significant other had been found outside, bloodied, and beaten unbelievably. As he strolled around the corner, clad in a dapper suit as he always was. Everything seemed to go in slow-motion. People frantically moved past him, as if he wasn’t there. They were in a rush to preserve any life that Nicole was hanging onto. They told him that the bleeding was severe. She barely breathed, but she kept on. If they had gotten to her any later, she might have slipped into a coma…or worse. A certain feeling of gravity came over Alex as he made his way through the clean corridors of the hospital.

People might have been asking him if he had any destination in mind. He didn’t bother to answer them, that is if he heard them to begin with. The chatter that they tried to send his way came through as something drowned out. His face showed anger, but it came out in occasional glimmers. He made his way past the primary nurses, and then past doctors. He stopped at a pair of double doors, his eyes falling on them. He turned his head back behind him to hear wheels screeching against the marble. The sound grew louder as a legion of doctors and nurses came bustling down. On a medical bed, Nicole laid, hanging onto whatever kept her to the earth. Alex took a step out of the way, to avoid being trampled. As he looked down, he saw glimpses of the damages. Blood had leaked all over the pillows and the sheets. She vanished behind the double doors, leaving Alex with a feeling unfamiliar to him.

There was a feeling of fear lingering inside, but what baffled him was how it wasn’t for himself.

The sense of fear developed from a fight or flight reflex. Alex could process that, thus making it something he understood. However, the idea is a personal notion. To feel fear for someone else scared him. He looked to the ground for answers. He decided to leave before anyone truly noticed him. He didn’t need a police officer confronting him and “politely” interrogating him on the assault. He came as fast as he could, which is both a good thing, but also a liability. He exited the hospital, and drove away from the premises with a neutral air about himself. As he parked in front of a restaurant, he took the time lay back and ponder.

“Who could have done it?” Alex thought.

The immediate thought came.

“Ashley.”

He sighed, pressing his hand against his head. It made too much sense. He saw how it happened too. Nicole said something, and Ashley snapped. He remembered her saying she was going there to spend time with them. Alex lowered his hand, eyeing the neon lights around him. He exited the car to go get some Chinese food, which left a bitter taste in his mouth.

Everything tasted like blood.

He knew that Ashley would never admit to it directly. The new personality of hers, or the “original” one, as she says, would try to shroud it all behind a vain inflection. For a moment, a rage took over him. He smashed into his steering wheel, startling a couple. They hugged each other, and looked into the car. When they looked deeper in, Alex glared at them. They scurried away. He looked back forward, counting in his head to calm down.

“Count down from 1,000.”

He sat there, counting mentally, before he let out a gasp.

He turned on his car before the sounds of the radio greeted him. He saw the time; 12:32 AM. He scowled at the time before opting to book a hotel. There was no point in staying up when he couldn’t see Nicole. If he continued, he knew he would lose his temper. He thought on how shameful it would be if he broke his streak. It had been months since he lost his temper, a feat that he had been holding onto like it was his lifeline.

He wasn’t going to break.

Not for Ashley.

Not at all.
