“Hey Harley, can I ask you something?”

Harley, it was Nina’s middle name. The only people who ever referred to her by that name were father and her brother. Pops was currently at work; a CEO’s job was never truly finished. Even on your off or down time, you were still on the clock. Therefore, that left her brother, Devlin.

It was early in the afternoon. Even still, it had already be a full day for the Lionheart Champion. She woke earlier than Jesus and traveled to the gym. There, she did a bunch of cardio and some strength drills to fortify that right arm of hers. DeMarcus Gresham was no fool—she knew that better than anyone. He’d target that arm, likely early in the match. She needed to be able to weather is storm, endure the level of pain he’d inflict…

An interview with an upstart Miami podcast followed her training. Promotion was ever so vital. Afterwards she did some shopping for the house. Then she went home and studied a few of DeMarcus’ previous matches—she’d been tackling two or three day.

And before her brother had called, she’d been preparing to make dinner and such for the wifey. It was taco night.

“Sure,” Nina said as she sat the phone and the table and hit speaker. She then went back to cutting up some lettuce and tomatoes. “What’s going on bro?”

Devlin hesitated. Silence persisted for a moment.

“Bro? You good over there?”

“Oh...yeah, I’m good.” Devlin shook his head, hoping it would clear with mind.

“Then go ahead and speak your mind,” Nina replied as she dumped all the lettuce into a bowl.”

“Well Harley, I just wanted to know if you were ready for this match you’ve got coming up.” He paused for a moment. “I don’t normally worry about you when you step in the ring. I mean, you’re amazing; and you got the skill set to up with just about anyone.

“But this Gresham guy—” he paused again. “This match against him won’t just be about skill. It will be about overcoming his his power. It will be about combating his hulking frame. It will be about staving off his hunger. Even as a fan watching from home, you can tell that he is chopping at the bit to become a champion once again.”

“And then there was those lingering injuries of yours. I know you said your head is better, but then there’s that arm—”

Nina listened as Devlin let out a sigh. It was an anxious one, filled with anxiety.

“Are you truly ready for this?”

Nina didn’t answer right away. She took the time to quickly wash away the veggie juice that rested on her hands. After drying, she picked up her phone and turned the speaker off.

“You know bro, I kind of like to think of my journey through the Lionheart Division has some grand odyssey...

“I wasn’t supposed to defeat Elijah Black for the Lionheart Championship. Everyone thought it was a long-shot. And hell, considering the man’s skill, maybe it was a long-shot. Even still, I put my nose to ground and I worked. I prepared. I envisioned myself winning and holding that belt in the air at the end of the night—that one of the things that kept me going when I bloody and exhausted during that match.

“I wasn’t supposed to defeat XPJ. He was a former Lionheart Champion. He was one of the people who revolutionized iGNITE. It was anticipated that he’d devour and engulf me in the ring. However, I created a plan to defeat him. I practiced that plan. I executed that plan. And at the end of the night, I received a check in the ‘win’ column.”

She took in a breath before she pressed on.

“The booking odds had me winning my match against Michael Alexander. However, the truth of the matter is, the man had a full head of steam and momentum going into the bout. He defeated me in tag team action. He made repeated claims as to why he thought he’d be a better Lionheart Champion—a people began to believe him. There’s also the fact that Alexander was an accomplish boxing in his heyday. Therefore, he had far more than a ‘puncher’s chance.’ However, I made him tap out. Just like Black. Just like XPJ.

“The there was Jackson Magnum—a man of many talents, and of many flaws. If anyone had the skills and ability to vanquish me in a Lionheart Rules Match, it was Jackson. However, he made to vital mistakes. The first, despite all the words he spoke, he doubted how talented I was in the ring. And the second, he didn’t follow up fully on this arm of mine—hell, his Saito suplex caused the injury in the first place. I saw those mistakes, and I spun them in my favor.”

Nina shook her head as she pulled a chair from underneath the table and sat down.

“Each leg of my journey has been exceedingly and progressively more difficult—Marcus is no different. People watching at home only know mere a measure of his strength; they don’t know the full extent. However, I trained with the man. Back as a student, he could manhandle anyone that stepped his way. Now, years later, with seasoning and training, his strength has got to be unimaginable. He’s also been improving his striking game as well; I peeped the boxing skills in our last match.” She let out a small sigh. “Dev, I’m not going to sit here and tell you any lies. Is this match going to be easy? No. No match I ever had has been easy. Marcus is a monster—there isn’t really a better word to describe him.”

She took a second to pause.

“And yet, I’ve defeated monsters before. Datura was considered to be unstoppable before she debuted in GPW; but she fell to me. XPJ? He fell to me. Everyone knows how talented Jimmy Page is, and even he fell to me. I walked into ECWF and challenged Zoey Alder, the company’s living legend in the making. She fell to me…”

She shook her head a bit.

“Dev, you and I are made of the same flesh and blood. You know I’m not invincible. However, you also know that when I’m determined and when I put my mind to things, I tend to get shit done. Well, my mind and body are fully focused on defeating Marcus at Unleash. No matter no matter the odds, no matter how my arm feels, the man is going to get the fight of his career. And I’m going to pull out another match that I aint supposed to win.

“So, aint no need to worry, alright?”

The conviction in her words moved Devlin. He nodded his head and let out a small sigh of relief.

“Alright. I know I haven’t been to many of these title defense. Hell, I think I’ve been to the Destiny defense. But, I’d like to be there for this one, if that’s cool.”

What many people didn’t know was that Devlin had been one of the masked men that accompanied Nina to the ring at Destiny: Chapter Four. For once, he’d gotten the chance to see things up close and personal. He wanted to support his sister on the grand stange. And, he wanted to support her in this endeavor as well.

“No doubt. I’ll set things up for you.”

“Hey Harley...love you.”

Nina let out a small laugh. “Love you too bro.” She got up out of her seat. “Now, I need to finish cooking. I’ll hit you afterwards, alright?”
