Conrad sat at his desk with his hand half way sitting on his head and through his hair. His leg jumped frantically as he just stared out into space. He fucked up. He slipped off the deep end. Don’t remember how or when, but it didn’t matter. The deed was already done. He took that leap of faith, and now he knew he was a gonner. Sitting there, he regretted it. Regretted even more when he sucked in the blow inside of his nose using a rolled up dollar bill that wasn’t even his. The worst part of it was the guy who gave it to him. He seemed familiar, but he couldn’t pinpoint where he knew him.

That thought stuck with him the most. Made him paranoid that his past was going to catch up with him. No longer haunting him like those guys piercing blue eyes, and that knowing smirk he wore like he knew something he didn’t. His anxiety was through the roof. Every noise and sound caused him to jump as the ticking of the clock seemed to be counting down his life line. Lifting his head finally coming back to the real world he checked to see exactly what the time was. 5:50 a.m. Brylee should be there any moment ready to tear him a new one for not being where he said he would be. He was beginning to fuck his relationship with her like he did his own sister. Her mother.

Just then he heard the door open, causing him to jump in his seat thinking it was Brylee, but that’s not who was staring back at him in the doorway. It was the guy with the familiar blue eyes wearing that knowing smile as he closed the door behind him. Conrad didn’t know how to react, or what to say. He just sat there in a daze as his mind was filled with a haze. The man kept coming closer, his smile turning more sinister with every step he took until he was standing there right in front of him in arms reach.

The only thing that was standing between them was his desk as the man said,
“Hello, Conrad”

Conrad couldn’t think straight. Knowing he was fucked, there was only one word he could fathom. “Shit.” Before the word even fully exited his mouth, his head was slammed down against his desk multiple times as the guy who walked in asked one simple question through clenched teeth, “Do you remember who I am?” The question at first fell on deaf ears until memories came flooding back in bits and pieces.

He was back on the streets that he used to walk making transactions. He remembered his eyes now. The same blue eyes that looked up at him as he handed him a vanilla envelope filled with the product he was going to sell that day. Then, his name came popping up in his mind like a light bulb being turned on. Silica.

As Conrad’s face was pressed against his desk, a smile appeared on his face remembering the little shit he was back then.
“You’re the guy who sold me blow the other night. What. Did I forget to pay you?” His answer didn’t please the man holding his head hostage as he slammed his face against the steal one more time before releasing his hold on him. Allowing him to finally raise his head on his own slowly. To try and not have the room spin around him.

Conrad watched as his guest took a seat across from him while he chuckled. Putting his feet up like he owned the place. Which in this moment he did, and the fact that he knew it caused Conrad to have this fire inside, but he was powerless. This is the punishment he was waiting for after he put Silica’s brother away. Thought it would be sooner than later, and there was only one person who he could blame at that very moment, Manolo. His prick of a detective brother in law.

The throbbing in his head began. Echoing through his ears, because it was so loud. Silca’s voice didn’t help matters either. His cockyness tone pierced his ears like nails on a chalk board.

“You have to remember me. We saw each other every day back in the day.” Conrad couldn’t help but lick his lip tasting the copper from his blood as his glare narrowed, he wiped his mouth with the back of his hand, and just smiled. “Yeah. You were the little shit who would do his brother’s bitch work. You still riding that tricycle around town boy?” The smile of his visitor faded briefly before he started to chuckle. Reaching behind him he pulled out a gun slowly cockinging it before fully extending his arm, and pointing it at him. “I forgot the mouth you had on you. Bound to get you into more trouble than getting you out of it.”

“So what do you want?” Conrad finally asked the question that Silica wanted him to ask so badly, and he was so happy to answer, “I talked to my brother the other day-” Before he could finish, Conrad spoke up quick, ”How’d you manage that. Suck a guards cock did ya? Your brother is in max. No phone calls. No visitors.” This just caused Silica to shrug as he wore that all too familiar knowing smile, “He got out of max for good behavior.”

That news caused Conrad to roll his eyes. How the justice system worked boggled his mind. It just added to the anger that he carried for his brother in law. A part of him wanted Silica to let him live so he could strangle him. He was so infuriated that he didn’t even know he slammed his fist on his desk. “If he asked you to kill me then fucking do it. I’ve been waiting for it for twenty three years.”

Silica just shook his head letting him know it wasn’t going to be that easy, “That is what he asked of me, but I convinced him to keep you around. The way I saw it, I was going to waste a whole lot of manpower trying to find you. So in return you are going pay me for…” He thinks about it for a moment, “Keeping my patience with you.” This caused Conrad to scolf. Thinking this boy couldn't actually be serious. “And how much is that fucking worth?”

“Roughly? I’d say one hundred thousand dollars.” Silica said with a smile making Conrad swallow. Almost choking on his own spit as he did so, “I- I don’t have that kind of money on me. Maybe if you give-”

Just then, they both perked up hearing the main doors open to the gym facility. They both looked out the window that looked out, and Conrad could see Brylee making her way in just on time like clock work. Trying to think, Conrad got up from his seat, and quickly tried to draw the blinds down. He tried to do it too fast, and just made them cockeyed. It made them draw more attention to the window than they were supposed to. This made Silica smile in amusement. Since what he was trying to hide he already knew about.

“You’ll have till August, but if you aren’t paid up by then, I’m going to need to take some collateral.”

Quickly, Conrad turned around to face him with an eyebrow raised, He was confused by all this. Why not make him sell drugs again, kill a guy, or just put bullet in his head and be done with it. Hell, torture him for christ sake. This was leading somewhere that Conrad didn’t want to follow, but he had to inquire more than what he was being given.

“What kind of collateral we talking?”

Silica stands up from his seat, and peaks through the window as he watches a young woman talk to a small boy around the age of twelve. The same age he started delivering drugs to the dealers on the corners.

“Sluagh is tapping into a new type of business.” he begins as he turns and looks at Conrad. “Where he is going to need some pretty fine women, and your niece-” As soon as his niece was pulled into to it, Conrad wanted to kill him. When he went to make a move though, Silica’s pistol was quickly pointed right in his face. That didn’t stop him from trying to give him a warning however, “You stay the fuck away from her. You hear me? Or I’ll-”

“You’ll what?” Silica asked with a shrug, “You’re in no position to do shit. If you’re not paid by the first of August.” He points out the window, “I’m coming for her.” Silica smiles, “I’ll hold her for two weeks. You know… to keep you motivated. If I’m not paid by the end of those two weeks. She will be mine. To do whatever the fuck I want with. Do we have an understanding, Mr. Rivers?”

Conrad just stood there not knowing what to do or what to say. He didn’t even know how he knew about Brylee being his niece. She didn’t even know, and he wanted to keep it that way. She was the only family he got. He didn’t want to lose her, because of his past mistakes.

“She can’t be a part of this.” Conrad pleaded, “I’ll get you the money. I don’t care what the fuck I got to do, but I’ll do it. Just leave her out of it.”

Silca looks at Conrad a bit bewildered, “I will be leaving her out of it… till August that is.”

When Brylee walked into the gym, she wasn’t expecting to see Conrad there since he blew her off last time they were supposed to get together, and work on her arsenal. When she saw him pull down the blinds of his office however, she was instantly upset. Instead of setting down her bags like a lady; She was slamming them down like the brawler she was. Making her presence known to him that she was there, and on time. More than what could be said for him at this point in time.

The boy that Conrad hired as a water boy just sat there on the wrestling ring’s edge. Just looking at her. Telling her to calm down with his hazel eyes which caused her to walk over to him wanting some answers.
“What’s he doing in there?” the kid just shrugged in response seemingly not wanting to get involved, but she needed to know what was going on. Sighing, she figured she’d throw out a guess. “Is he... in a meeting or something?”

Putting her hand on her hips, the question caused the boy to look over at the window, and when Brylee looked in that general direction, following his gaze, she saw a man she didn’t recognize staring back at her. The way he did it made her skin crawl, and it didn’t feel flattering. Almost made her want to hug herself, and cover herself up.

She just stood there, and stared. Even though he had turned away from her. Leaning towards the boy she spoke softly, “Who is that?” The boy finally drew nearer as he whispered, “I don’t know. He came in and went in there.” He gestured to the office, “Then he-” the young boy cut himself short not wanting to tell Brylee what had occurred. So she nudged him playfully. In an attempt to coax him to tell her the rest. When he didn’t budge, she gave him an encouraging smile, ”You can tell me.” The boy thought for a moment before cupping his hand around his mouth. Leaning in, he began to whisper in Brylee’s ear what he saw happen through the window. From Conrad’s head bouncing off his desk to the gun being pointed to his face.

This alone caused Brylee to freeze in place, and wonder what the hell Conrad might have gotten himself into. Not wasting anytime, she began to head towards the office ignoring the kids hand that brushed against her arm in attempts to try and stop her. On her way there, the door she was aiming for began to open, and the man that was a total mystery began to walk towards her. That’s when everything slowed. She took every feature of his face in. Even the faint scar above his lip.

As they past one another he grabbed her arm at her side forcefully, causing her to stop, and look him in the eyes. She watched as he examined her over while inhaling deep taking in her aroma. Taking his free hand he went to brush it against her cheek, but she reached over and grabbed his wrist stopping him just an inch away from her face. This caused him to smile,
“Aren’t you feisty. I like, feisty.” He stared at her a moment before letting go of her arm, and she did the same to his his. Before he left, he leaned in, and gave her one last whiff before he walked away. Leaving her standing there thinking about his eyes.

They reminded her of her of Christopher’s eyes. Her deceased boyfriend. They were blue just like his, but that's where the similarities ended. Brylee took one glance in his direction to make sure he was leaving before heading into Conrad’s office. Where she watched him begin to seat himself gingerly in his chair while taking a deep breath. She hesitated a moment, before walking up to him pointing behind her, and whispering.
“Who was that?”

Sighing, Conrad pinched the bridge of his nose before clenching his teeth in pain, “No body.” If he thought that answer was good enough for her to leave him be, he was wrong. “Is he the reason why you-” before she could say another word, Conrad cut her off with a fire of anger burning in his eyes. “I WAS FUCKIN THERE!” He said trying to be convincing for his sake and for hers as he slammed his fist down on the table. ”Kronk Boxing Community Center.” he then pointed at her to make things clear, “I was there at eight pm.” he tapped his index finger on his desk after every word he said before sitting back trying to relax, “You were late. I told you what happens when you’re late. I leave. You don’t get your training in for fuck sake.” After that, Brylee and him just hung there in silence. Giving her enough time to exam his face.

His face was beginning to bruise up and swell, but that’s not the only thing she noticed. His brown eyes were glassed over, and his pupils were dilated. She didn’t need to be a licensed nurse to figure out that he was high. She knew it, because her ex was drug addict. Always popping something new to get a different perspective of life. He was going to quit for her, but he never did. Would just get a quick fix here and there so he could feel free for a brief second. Little did he know he was trapped. Like a bird in a cage.

Shaking her head, she held back the tears as she looked to the sky to compose herself before she looked to the ground,
“I won’t be late again. I promise.” Her reaction took him by surprise, she was letting him off easy, and he didn’t know why. Then he looked in her eyes, and that's when he saw his older sister staring back at him for the very first time. In that moment, he realized how much Brylee looked exactly like her mother. Same sad brown eyes. Filled with nothing but disappointment for him.

Conrad knew, she knew, what he was doing or did. He could see it on her face, and yet she was still standing there waiting to take direction. He wanted her to get angry, yell at him, do something, instead of standing there like a soldier saying ‘YES, SIR.’ He didn’t know how to take it. He chalked it up as her trying to be respectful, and just staying out of his business. That’s how she been since day one. Never really complained, and followed everything that he told her. Never seconded guessed him.

“Why don’t you just go home, Brylee. We’ll- We’ll pick things back up another time.” Brylee nodded her head for a moment, but that wasn’t what she wanted to do. She wanted to stay to train, and to keep an eye on him to make sure he was going to be ok. So she spoke up, “If you don’t mind. I would like to stay, and work on my ring work. Bouncing off the ropes, rolls, falls, climbing...”

Conrad just waved her off, leaving her to her own demise. If she wanted to train today who was he to stop her? He couldn’t even stop the man who wanted a paycheck from him.

He should have done something, anything to get Silica to shoot him dead, but if he did that he wouldn’t be able to protect Brylee. At least he has a chance to do that while he’s alive.

Standing up from his desk, he made his way towards the doorway, and leaned against the frame. He watched Brylee bounce herself off the ropes, and it caused him to smile. Conrad was proud of her for staying focused. and being so determined to master the craft that he long ago mastered.

Letting out a sigh, Conrad scratched the back of his head and wondered what the hell he was doing just standing there. So he walked up to the ring, and began to shout orders to her like a drill sergeant. Brylee followed every one without argument, and hesitation. That night they made up for that one night he choice blow before her.
