Brian Stryker

The time is 6:30 am in Maui, Hawaii. The sun is starting to peek over the trees as there is signs of life in the Dougherty household. Brooke is asleep in bed as Brian is standing in his kitchen. His son Richie woke him up cause he wanted to make Brian pancakes for breakfast, which meant Brian had to make the pancakes. Brian didn’t mind though. He made them both a pancake breakfast. When it was all said and down with, Richie fell back asleep on the couch, as Brian ate a plan pancake by hand.

He had his phone in his hand as he looked up at the time and figured it was late enough to give a call to the east coast. He dialed the number into his phone as he waited. It rang a few times before finally he heard the phone pick up.

BRIAN: Hey dad…..been a while….

STEPHEN DOUGHERTY: Hello Brian, yes it’s been a long time. Few months at my last count.

BRIAN: Yeah sorry…just been busy lately. What with Brooke, my job, and Richie becoming a handful…..he has mom’s eyes dad.

STEPHEN: Yeah I know. You have them too.

BRIAN: Look I just wanted to call cause…I know we tried working things out before. And we were okay for a little while.

STEPHEN: But you never could get over your new stepmom.

Brian looked over at Richie to make sure he was still asleep as he talked in a loud whisper.

BRIAN: How do you think I’d react to a 23 year old asking me to call her mom when I just met her? I have scars older than her!

STEPHEN: I was never asking you to accept it. Just wanted you to know. Sarah misses you by the way.

BRIAN: I’m surprised she’s even talking about me. Thought she still blamed me for not being in that car with her and Emily when it happened.

STEPHEN: She was mad for a while. But she came around to the notion that even if you were there, you couldn’t have changed anything even you were there. She wants to come out to visit for a few weeks. You okay if we fly her out?

BRIAN: Yeah…that’s completely fine…but um….what if you come out with her? I mean, I haven’t exactly given you and Brandy a fair chance , and I promised mom I’d at least try to make things work. Come out for a week with her and she can stay for the rest.

STEPHEN: That would be nice. And look, I understand where you’re coming from, I really do. I screwed things up back then, I really did. I want to at least have a formal relationship with you. Even if you can’t call me dad, just to know you are at least there would help me sleep at night.

BRIAN: Well you gotta understand that’s 27 years of frustration and feelings of abandonment right there. That doesn’t exactly heal in 3 years. But I will admit, I wasn’t the most willing person to try.

STEPHEN: That you weren’t.

BRIAN: But, maybe if we’re not gonna be on equal footing for a while, doesn’t mean Richie should get to see his aunt and grandfather.

STEPHEN: And grandmother.

BRIAN: Let’s not push it that far.

Stephen can be heard laughing from the other line.

STEPHEN: Well we’ll work on that. I’ll speak with Brandy and Sarah about it and we’ll get back to you. Make sure our schedules line up right?

BRIAN: Yeah….

STEPHEN: Talk to you soon Brian. Say hi to Brooke for me.

BRIAN: Yeah dad, I will…..tell Sarah I said the same thing.

STEPHEN: I will. Bye Brian.

BRIAN: Bye dad.

Brian hangs up his phone as he taps it against his hand a few times as he exhales deeply. He looks at the two empty plates on the table then over at a sleeping Richie, who has now splayed himself out across the couch. Brian smiled to himself as he walked over to Richie, grabbed the blanket off the back of the couch and placed it over his son. He walked back to the kitchen, picked up the plates and placed them in the sink for washing as he leaned against the edge of the sink, and looked out the window at the rising sun.
