EDM- also known as Electronic/Dance Music categorizes everything like trance, dubstep, drum and bass, house, etc. Do you think it's real music? As in, real music that can be compared to other genres as a legitimate candidate. Whether you like it or not, do you view it as real music is the question. Recently the question's been floating around my school, and a lot of people think just because it involves computers that it isn't music.

I would say its music because for you to make something that people actually like you have to have some knowledge of music and know what you're doing.

It truly is music, a lot of it more-so than most mainstream crap that gets pumped out.

I say this because it isnt near as easy to produce (good quality) dubstep and the like as such popular genres as rap where all you have to do to be successful is talk at a fast pace over some bass about how cool it is to be a gangster, how many bitches you've slammed/and or smacked, and how much drugs you do, and punk where you whine about how much your life sucks, fight the power, angsty angst, angst!(Drugs in here too)

This. And all that it encompasses.

I definitely think it's real music. I mean it's used for the same purposes, can be purchased and listened to in the same way. Just because it's made with a computer doesn't make it not music. It just makes computers instruments. That would be the same thing as if back in the day all the had was bongo drums and all of a sudden someone invents the pan pipes and everyone is like "NOPE, IT'S NOT REAL CUZ IT'S NOT BONGOS".

I mean come on, that dubstep song MADE the new Far Cry 3 trailer.

I have to say, I think it is music. Especially because it is made with a computer. A computer, to me, is an instrument that can PLAY other instruments. And computer's, in a sense, can really only compute a 1 or 0, a yes or a no. Now, they can control thousands, millions of 1s and 0s per second, but the distance in between 0 and 1, is where you still need the human element. And to me, that's what makes music. You can have just as much crappy dubstep as there is, say country (a genre not known for it's use of computers). You need actual musical talent, and an understanding of the music, mood, and audience to create truly beautiful music. No matter the genre. Cause I've been moved certain rap songs the same way I've been moved by say Bach or Beethoven.

Funny thing about the song in the FarCry 3 trailer is it was made using sounds from Call of Duty and made as a fan song, the Song is Machine Gun 16bit Remix-Noisia

I definitely like dubstep as a genre, but I don't really enjoy most music labeled "pop" or "dance", though they are admittedly fun to dance to. :P
Anyway, they are legitimate genres, and should be considered as such.
I just don't like it when the mainstream gets filled up with a lot of similar stuff, especially if it's stuff I don't really like.

It's funny to me how similar we all are.
It's almost as if only a few personality types and a few opinions both like Halo and go to a forum with sprites/game about it.
