So, some of you may have seen the KONY 2012 stuff floating around. If not, he's an African criminal, abducting children and using them as soldiers. Please, if you watched the video, please read this article with as much compassion as you gave the video, and if you didn't watch the video, please don't tune into Invisible Children stretching the truth to make this man look even more terrible than he actually is. THE ARTICLE Now, if you REALLY don't want to do that, let me hit some highlights for you: -As a registered not-for-profit, its finances are public. Last year, the organization spent $8,676,614. Only 32% went to direct services (page 6), with much of the rest going to staff salaries, travel and transport, and film production. -Both the Ugandan army and Sudan People’s Liberation Army are riddled with accusations of rape and looting, but Invisible Children defends them, arguing that the Ugandan army is “better equipped than that of any of the other affected countries”, although Kony is no longer active in Uganda andhasn’t been since 2006 by their own admission. -As Chris Blattman, a political scientist at Yale, writes on the topic of IC’s programming, “There’s also something inherently misleading, naive, maybe even dangerous, about the idea of rescuing children or saving of Africa. […] It hints uncomfortably of the White Man’s Burden. Worse, sometimes it does more than hint. The savior attitude is pervasive in advocacy, and it inevitably shapes programming. Usually misconceived programming.” -Still, Kony’s a bad guy, and he’s been around a while. Which is why the US has been involved in stopping him for years. U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) has sent multiple missions to capture or kill Kony over the years. And they’ve failed time and time again, each provoking a ferocious response and increased retaliative slaughter. The issue with taking out a man who uses a child army is that his bodyguards are children. Any effort to capture or kill him will almost certainly result in many children’s deaths, an impact that needs to be minimized as much as possible. |

My response to him using children soliders: Nuke Him. Plain and Simple. Repercussions? Meh, there was going to be childrens deaths anyways, better to not mentally scar a bunch of soldiers or have them kill every child they come across in fear of them being combatants. But in all seriousness this isn't new so I don't know why people are complaining now. There's been reports of Somalian children soldiers and Middle eastern children soldiers but they've never got this much attention before. Yeah child warriors is for most people morally wrong. (not so much for me I'm extremly desensitized about war and death.) But for all of a sudden there be this huge uproar, I'm kinda mad. But I do hope they kill that man. |

This big uproar is because of Invisible Children. A non-profit organization I used to support, but due to a lot of light being shed on them, and unsatisfactory results coming forward, I'm not too high on them anymore. Awareness is good, let's bring this man to justice, but not with the Ugandan military who repe women and hurt even more children. |

Send in Delta or some form of SAS. Four man team, SAD mission, silent warfare. Done and dusted. All that is needed is a location. Children make shit sentries and any Special force unit, save the French, would be able to do a simple ghost run. |

I like what they're trying to do, and it would be cool if they were successful and caught him. But everybody thinking they're gonna make a difference by posting a video on Facebook is a complete idiot. Also there is no way the United States is going to send personnel over to Uganda to actually go out and find him and capture him. All they will do is send advisers like they've been doing. The sad truth is there is nothing of importance in those countries, no oil or any other resource that would make the US interested in that region. Also even if the US did go there, you think his child army would just surrender and hand Kony over? It would end up like Vietnam where people would call the troops baby killers and so on because they had to shoot children that were firing on them. Also after they catch Kony there's a very slim chance that his child soldiers will just re-assimilate into society. They're all gonna be traumatized and unfit for society because of the many years being enslaved by that guy. Just being a realist... |

Video came across as preachy and self-righteous. Appears to be a good cause, but that dude seems like a total hipster douche. |
