Lucid Dreaming

"Your life defines you, but you define your legacy."

So I got interested in the subject of lucid dreaming a while back and read up on how to train yourself to do it, but the guide that I read made things seem a lot harder than they actually are and I got a bit discouraged. Recently, however, I got back into it and got some more info from a lucid dreaming subreddit on reddit. With help from people on there I decided to try again and do whatever it took to have at least one lucid dream (although if I have one, I'm gonna want more) and so far I've been getting some great results and got extremely close to having a lucid dream the other day.

So I was wondering, can any of you guys do it? Or has it ever happened to you? And no, I'm not talking about "I knew I was dreaming but it remained a normal dream", I mean that you actually achieved lucidity and you were like "woah hey I'm dreaming, all of a sudden everything is in super HD, I can think normally, and I can do whatever the hell I want!".

If you don't know what lucid dreaming is and couldn't pick it up from my post, feel free to google it and have your mind blown by the possibilities.

Yeah, I found out about it last year during a research paper for my english class. Very cool stuff, have never been able to do it myself, although I haven't tried. I'd be jealous as hell if you actually achieve it.

Call me Mik

I've been trying for a few years. The closest I can come is either controlling myself in 3rd person perspective, or being completely omnipotent over the inhabitants and events of my dream(s). I have to go to sleep super early though, it takes me a fair amount of time.

TL;DR: Helpful (to lucid dreaming) parts are bolded.

I used to have a lucid dream almost each night after a few weeks' training.
It seems to me like the sleepier I am, the more likely I am to have a lucid dream.
For me, when I have a lucid dream, I can only a little bit think normally. Like, I still accept a few oddities that are in my dream, and have somewhat poor logic, up until the few seconds before I wake.

Anyway, I trained myself to have lucid dreams by ensuring that I was not dreaming every time I woke, and frequently throughout the day. (Obviously, I knew I wasn't dreaming beforehand, but doing a string of actions each morning will get incorporated into your dreams, and then you will notice that you are dreaming during them.)

Btw, I read that digital clocks often change times when you look at them in dreams, and that books are often blank.
Once, I learned I was dreaming by waking up(in the dream), looking at the clock, it said "6:00", I turned away and looked back, and it said "5.1".
Funny how being in a beach house by a very swampy looking beach which I was entirely unfamiliar with tells me nothing about whether I'm dreaming, and then seeing the clock look odd helped.

Well be jealous, cuz it frickin happened! Sorta. I'm getting there, at least lol.

So there I am, suspended by a little helicopter thing and going around serving drinks with my feet to rich people at this crazy big mansion where a big party is being hosted. Everything's going great, when I get to some table where a lady in a green dress is being a super bitch. She's making things hard for me and then complaining when I mess up.

Suddenly I wake up and realize it was just a dream. Following my usual methods, I do a reality check (what Nile was talking about, only what I do is look around the room and make sure everything is as it should while asking myself if i'm dreaming, then counting my fingers to make sure I have 5). I'm definitely awake, but I notice that it's only 8:00, so I still have an hour before I need to get up. So I try to go back to sleep, and as I lay there I think to myself "I will realize I'm dreaming and become lucid", in order to perform a Mnemonic Induced Lucid Dream, or MILD. After repeating this phrase not even 3 times, I'm already fast asleep.

Somehow, I manage to pop back into the exact same dream as before in the rich people mansion. This time, however, I can still feel myself being asleep in my bed and instantly remember that "hey, didn't I just wake up in my bed two seconds ago? Yeah, i remember this place, this is just a dream! I don't even need to do a reality check, i KNOW this is a dream!"

Unfortunately, I didn't get to become 100% lucid and get the whole "vision is suddenly super HD" effect, but I did manage to gain a good amount of control over my actions. Considering all the people had been super snobby with me, I decided to trash the mansion and began thrashing around, breaking and jumping on everything. Then I remembered "hey wait, this is a lucid dream, I should be trying to fly!" So I hop around a few times, but all I manage to do is hover a few feet off the ground for a few seconds at a time. I have a feeling I couldn't actually take off because I was indoors, but either way it was pretty fucking cool.

Then I woke up again, this time for good unfortunately. So yeah, that was my first lucid dream. I'm not quite a master yet, but I'm definitely getting better! Last month I could hardly remember any of my dreams. As of two weeks ago I've been remember almost all my dreams and on top of that managed to do a reality check, didn't manage to realize I was dreaming. And now this week I finally became slightly lucid. Things are definitely progressing, soon enough I'll be building a new universe in my own mind :)

Haha, congrats Rill. Yeah you starting this topic waaaay earlier peaked my interest in this again and I've been looking up stuff on it. I'm terrified to try tbh, cause I know even if I try to MILD I'll accidentally WILD, and than get hallucinations scaring the bajeebus outta me. I have been maintaining regular reality checks though, so hey, maybe I'll get over it eventually.

Weird thing is I discovered I have had sleep paralysis before, but I was simultaneously dreaming with it.

BTW, do you keep a sleep journal? I've been thinking about doing it, but the times I do remember my dreams they're REALLY fucked up, and well, my mom discovering the journal wouldn't be all too good, she'll think I'm insane or something. :X

I used to have a dream journal. Some pretty fucked stuff was written in it. I stopped doing it, though, because some days I would forget to fill it in and, well, I just stopped.

The closest thing to a lucid dream I had was when I had an inception dream. Like, in my dream I fell asleep, and my dream self was controlling his dreams. So basically my dream self had sex with some hot chick in his dream.

Fun fact, if you have a wet dream in your dream it still counts as a wet dream. Did laundry the next morning.

Lucid dreaming sounds fun but I never really considered doing it. Maybe I'll start to look into it more.

Honestly, I've tried WILD several times and wasn't able to do it. Even the two times where I think I may have gotten myself into waking sleep paralysis, I had absolutely zero hallucinations. They're quite common though, so I may not have been in SP, but it sure as hell felt like it. Also, trying to do MILD won't get you into sleep paralysis at all. Honestly, if you're super awake then you'll repeat the phrase(s) somewhere between 10 and 30 times, then get distracted, forget about it, and fall asleep normally. If you're extremely sleepy, then you might actually fall asleep shortly after starting to do your repetitions and visualizations, which is DEFINITELY a good thing, I feel like LDs are a lot more likely in this situation. And even if you somehow got yourself in sleep paralysis and began to hallucinate demons and scary stuff like people do sometimes, you have to remember that none of it is real and that it can't possibly hurt you. Even though you'll most likely still panic in the heat of the moment, it's good to just know and assure yourself that it's not real beforehand, that way you won't be afraid to even do it on purpose.

And technically sleep paralysis happens to us every night. It's our body's way of stopping us from flailing around and waking ourselves up while we dream. The technique with WILD is to get your body to do this while you're still awake, which, although the process is simple enough, takes some practice to pull off.

And yes, I do keep a dream journal. I don't actually have a notebook, I just have a word document on the phone where I type them all in. If you have similar capabilities, you should try the same. Although it helps to write in your journal as soon as you wake up, you can try to just visualize the dream you just had so that you can remember it more clearly and be able to wait a few minutes before you write it down. This way, if you really want to keep it private, you can type it up on your computer in some secret place that no one will find or something like that. Also, the more you write in your dream journal, the more dreams you'll remember and the more vividly you'll remember them, which means that you might be able to remember the non-fucked up ones too haha.

Good work doing regular reality checks though, those are definitely the easiest thing to do for lucid dreaming. Be sure to really question reality when you do them, though. Ask yourself "am I dreaming right now?" and look around to make sure everything looks 100% normal and familiar to you. Even though your dream self tends to find crazy dream stuff normal, if you manage to do this in your dream after doing a reality check, you're pretty much guaranteed to become fully lucid.

Also, if you want more information and a good place to discuss lucid dreaming, I suggest going to reddit and subscribing to the lucid dreaming subreddit (r/luciddreaming). You'll find out a bunch of cool stuff, get first hand experience from people who LD on a regular basis, and reading about lucid dreaming frequently will really prime your subconscious and increase your chances of becoming lucid.

/holy shit that was a long post.
