![]() Would you believe that silly channel called Cartoon Network, that we've been so eagerly dismissing for years (with reason), has managed to not only bring back Scooby-Doo, but also given it a very coherent and followable story? The show debuted in 2010, but it only showed up on my radar when the new season started airing. I dug into it after it hooked me, and here's what I found out about it: *The show has some stellar production values. It mixes some top notch modern animation with the classical 60s style of the original show, while still making everything feel modern day, giving it a bit of a "timeless" feel (Kinda like how Batman TAS looked like it was set in the 50s, but was distinctly modern day?) *It is a lot darker and more mature than your normal SD series. The overall tone of the setting is a lot gloomier (Example) Murder and death is normal, as well as the villain motivations and tactics becoming QUITE a bit more unsettling and sadistic. (Example: Remember all those multiple door chase scene gags in the original? They tried that, and what was the monster's response? Set the house on fire with them still inside.). Even their APPEARANCES are a lot creepier than your normal costumed villain in the shows (Example). Also, all those little insights and implications to how shitty the SD world was back in the original? It's all in the forefront here. It seems like literally every character has an ulterior motive about pretty much every little thing they do. (The mayor (Fred's dad in this continuity) warning the kids about how dangerous their activities are, only to find out he only told them that because they were ruining the town's tourism industry by solving all these "supernatural" happenings.) *Going with the ongoing story, it makes sense that the show is a limited run series. It's only scheduled for 2 seasons, consisting of 52 episodes, presented as "Chapters". It's currently on Chapter 41 out of 52. *Origin of the group has been reworked to fit the new story, they're a group of friends that come together to solve a large mystery surrounding the disappearance of a previous group similar to them several decades beforehand. Spoiler: click to toggle *Said group was in the middle of their own mystery when they disappeared. The new group aims to finish what they started alongside finding out what happened to them. Spoiler: click to toggle *Unlike most other versions of the show, this one can get very creepy at times (Example of some background scenery.) *AND unlike every other version, this one has some of the biggest and most shocking plot twists ever put into animation. Spoiler: click to toggle Most of what I know is learned from the TvTropes article on the show, since I'm still struggling to find ways to catch up with it (the older eps are very hard to find.) I don't have a very reliable (unless you're willing to pay for Amazon play or iTunes) online source of watching it, but it airs weekdays on Cartoon Network at 1pm Central. Usually in a block of 2 episodes, to take up a full hour. Spoilers in these 2 videos Explaining a lot of the events of Season 2 so far. And where the series has left of for now (It's on hiatus until god knows when.) |

You mean to tell me that this version and previous versions are all connected in a story? Very clever... This does beg one question though...what's the story of their Volkswagen bus with the hippy paint job? |

At first...2nd season is weird about it. She's basically got a girlfriend in all but name (probably not to piss off moral guardians by having a legitimate lesbian relationship in what's still considered a Kid's show.) |

Huh, that's... that's just fine. I saw the second half of an episode while flipping through channels. I was so confused when her and Shaggy were so eager to get some alone time. Definitely darker than any other Scooby Doo series. Well, except maybe the Zombie Island movie. Then again, I've only seen one- and not even a whole- episode so I can't really compare. |

Wow so I read all your spoiler tags and that's actually pretty impressive that the plot would be so complex. especially that last bit about freddy's dad, that's actually really crazy! As for velma having a pseudo girlfriend, that's pretty hilarious. And I agree, the zombie island movie kind of scared me as a kid. I actually owned it on DVD for whatever reason, even though I had never been that huge of a fan of scooby doo (i had caught most of the episodes while I mindlessly watched TV as a child, but I never went out of my way to watch it). |
